There are really lots of orchids growing all around us; especially in the hills surrounding Santa Clara Valley. You may have some growing in your backyard and not even know it.

Ed will give a presentation on native California orchids. This is a topic which will surprise many of us. There are really lots of orchids growing all around us; especially in the hills surrounding Santa Clara Valley. You may have some growing in your backyard and not even know it. A new specis of orchid was discovered in Yosemite only last year! Ed is a SCVOS board member and opens his property for our annual Greenhouse Tour. He has propagated Epipactis gigantia and frequently has some for sale. Ed has traveled widely and seen many orchids in situ in Panama and Hawaii. We are fortunate to have him share his knowledge with us. For a good article on native West Coast orchids, see Orchids Magazine April 2011 Page 240; many of the orchids in that article are similar to California. It was a great chance to buy some really good orchids grown by our members. The scheduled auctioneer, Jeff Trimble, was unable to attend. Like a great relief pitcher, SCVOS Vice President Peter Brown stepped in and did a fantastic job. Barry Zimmerman and Oliver Colmenar provided technical help and everything went well. The name is derived from two Greek words spathe, spathe, and glotta, tongue, probably referring to the broad labellum midlobe.

(Spa) is a genus of evergreen, terrestrial orchids allied to the following genera: Acanthephippium, Bletia, Calanthe, and Phaius. The name is derived from two Greek words spathe, spathe, and glotta, tongue, probably referring to the broad labellum midlobe. There are about 45 to 63 species of Spathoglottis ranging from Southern China, India, SE Asia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Borneo, New Guinea, New Caledonia, Solomon Islands, and Cape York Peninsula in Australia. According to Jay Pfahl, the heaviest concentration of the genus is in New Guinea. Most Spathoglottis species grow in moist to wet areas. They grow in full sun. In cultivation, sun and water requirements are high coupled with high fertilizer use when in active growth. They are relatively easy to grow. In South Florida, this genus can be grown outdoors. According to the Stokes Tropicals website, Spa. plicata is hardy to 32 F. It can be successfully grown outdoors in the warmer parts of the San Francisco Bay Area. Spa. plicata is the type species. It has achieved invasive status in Hawaii and the Caribbean. The following excerpt is from the 6
