4 France : Champagne Bollinger This fine Grande Marque House uses a high proportion of its own grapes in their blends, 85% of which are from Grand Cru or Premier Cru vineyards. Pinot Noir is the predominant variety, but this is cleverly teamed with Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier to produce their famous, opulent house style. She is taking full advantage of all the opportunities that modern technology offers but is determined to guard the traditions of this well grounded family business. 5 Gosset Pierre Gosset was Mayor of Ay when, in 1584, he founded his boutique Champagne House. Gosset still has a site in Ay although they have now a grander establishment in Épernay as well. They attach great importance to the specific character of each individual terroir and, using their long standing contacts, they blend together the best Crus from 45 Grand and Premier Cru villages to great effect. They believe in the old ways, not only is the fruit all harvested by hand, but the rémuage (turning of the bottles) is all done by hand as well. The results speak for themselves. Blin Champagne H. Blin started in 1947, after Henri Blin, from the ancient Vincelles family, together with 28 other winemakers bought a press house. Pinot Meunier dominant, the House is situated in the Marne Valley where this grape flourishes producing a unique, subtle freshness and fruitiness. Louis Boyier champagne was named after Alfred Louis Bower, the Lord Mayor of London Crisp and dry with lovely biscuit and brioche flavours, this is a very elegant Champagne with great length. Krug Grande Cuvée is blended from up to 30 different Premier Cru plots, some no bigger than a back garden, and from as many as ten different vintages, all barrel fermented. Lovingly hand crafted, this is a creamy beauty. They believe that the secret of any fine wine lies in the vineyards and it is no coincidence, therefore, that their Cellar Director is also their Vineyard Director. Rich, powerful and classy, Roederer is hard to beat. 6 Pol Roger Still family owned, Pol Roger may be one of the smallest of the Grand Marque Champagne Houses but it is one of the very finest. They own 87 hectares of vineyards and their seven kilometres of chalk cellars in Épernay are the coolest and deepest of the region, which probably accounts for the exceptional finesse of their bubbles. Altogether a class act. The style is robust and beguiling with red berry fruit, mineral notes and refreshing acidity. SPK-W NV Blanc de Noirs 75cl France : Bordeaux House Bordeaux R 2012 Davy s Claret 75cl Château Argadens BORDEAUX SUPERIOR Château Argadens has been owned since 2002 by the Sichel family, who are also part owners of Château Palmer and a number of other estates. Their aim is to make the wine a benchmark within the Bordeaux Superieur appellation. Grapes are sourced from a parcel of 45 hectares located in Entre-Deux-Mers and the wine spends 12 months in oak barrels. The winery is named after the family which founded the estate in the 13th century. W 2016 Château Argadens Blanc 75cl R 2014 Château Argadens Rouge 75cl Château Peyronat CÔTES DE BORDEAUX BLAYE A small property in Blaye with 14 hectares of vineyards, focusing on biodiversity and allowing natural expression of the terroir, which is based on clay/calcareous soils. 90% Merlot and 10% Cab Sauv, treated with no chemicals, the grapes are hand-harvested and the wine is aged in stainless steel. Certified organic. 7 Château Brisson CÔTES DE CASTILLON Situated in Belvés de Castillon on the north bank of the Dordogne, east of Saint-Emilion. Owned since 1980 by Paul Valdés, the vineyard consists of 18 hectares of mainly Merlot vines, averaging 30 years of age. Harvesting is done by hand, yields are kept low and everything possible is done to enhance the biodiversity of the soil. Winemaking includes pre-fermentation maceration at cool temperatures, gravity flow transfer and gentle pneumatic pressing. Wines are aged in French oak barrels. R 2015 Château Brisson 75cl R 2012 Château Brisson 37.5cl Château Gaury Balette ENTRE-DEUX-MERS It is quite a trek out to Mauriac but you only have to meet Bernard Yon to know that you have come to the right place, he is such a dedicated and charming professional. Gaury Balette Rouge is made from 50/50 Cabernet Merlot and the Blanc is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Gris and Semillon. W 2016 Château Gaury Balette Blanc 75cl R 2015 Château Gaury Balette Rouge 75cl Château Laujac MÉDOC The huge estate of Laujac is located in the heart of the Médoc region. It covers some 400 hectares in total, of which 75 hectares are planted to vines. It encompasses two vineyards classified Crus Bourgeois in 1932: the Laujac vines are beautifully sited on filter gravels, providing excellent natural drainage. R 2014 Château Laujac 75cl Château Beaumont HAUT-MÉDOC This large estate has a fine position right in the centre of the Médoc between Saint-Julien and Margaux. Beaumont are passionate about sustainable farming and they are justly proud of their certification by Terra Vitis ; wines from this estate have been getting better and better of late. Both rich and crowd pleasing they are amongst the best of the Cru Bourgeois. While it did not appear on the original 1855 Classification document straight away, thanks to the efforts of its owner, Caroline de Villeneuve Durfort, Château Cantemerle was added to the list as the 5th Growth only a few months later, and this entry became the first modification to the 1855 Classification. It has a great position on a gravelly plateau in the centre of the Médoc towards Saint-Julien overlooking the Gironde. Since 2009, it has been run by their energetic winemaker, Paz Espajo. 8 Château du Moulin Rouge Château du Moulin Rouge HAUT-MÉDOC This estate has been passed down through 13 generations of the same family and it would be an understatement to say that they were passionate about it. It has a great position just south of Saint-Julien-Beychevelle, they use plenty of new oak and everything is worked by hand. A favourite of Robert Parker, who in his book Bordeaux describes it as: somewhat reminiscent of such wines as Hortevie and Terrey-Gros-Caillou. Of course, du Moulin Rouge is significantly less expensive since it is entitled only to the Haut-Médoc appellation. In 1973, Leopold Figeac decided to restore the four hectares estate in Lalande de Pomerol. Later he purchased another six hectares with his daughter and son in law. All his efforts have been justified since the Château is now well regarded in the appellation and is still run by his grandson Jean Baptiste Bourotte. R 2014 Château Les Haut Conseillants 75cl R 2012 Château Les Haut Conseillants 75cl R 2014 Château Les Haut Conseillants 150cl Château Angludet MARGAUX Owned and managed by the Sichel family, Angludet has a great terroir in Margaux overlooking the lower lying land of the Gironde. Covering 81 hectares with vines averaging 25 years old, Château Angludet is one of the oldest estates in the Médoc which, over time, has proved their name to be synonymous with quality. This is a real gem and terrific value. 9 Château Kirwan MARGAUX A 3ème Cru Classé Margaux property that has hit fine form in the last decade. Named after its Irish proprietor who was guillotined in Since 1925 Kirwan has been owned by négociant, Schröder and Schÿler. The beautiful 18th century Château has 35 hectares of vineyards. The wine is typically 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Petit Verdot. Grapes are handharvested and then fermented in temperature-controlled, stainless-steel tanks. The wine is then matured in oak barriques (30-50% new) for 18 months. R 2012 Charmes de Kirwan 75cl R 2014 Charmes de Kirwan 75cl R 2013 Château Kirwan 75cl Château Rocher-Calon MONTAGNE-SAINT-ÉMILION Returning home after WW1, Pierre Lagardere, current owner Gael s great grandfather, bought a hectare of land in Pomerol thus beginning the family tradition of winemaking. Over the next four generations the family increased their acreage through the acquisition of new vineyards throughout Libournais and recently invested in state of the art equipment boasting temperature controlled ageing cellars, pneumatic wine press and micro-oxygenation equipment. Château Rocher-Calon is situated on some of the best soils of Montagne Saint-Émilion and normally constitutes a blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. A qualitative approach to viticulture is standard, with green harvesting, leaf-removals and hand picking the norm. R 2015 Château Rocher-Calon 150cl R 2015 Château Rocher-Calon 37.5cl R 2016 Château Rocher-Calon 75cl Château Lynch Moussas PAUILLAC The Château comprises of 60 hectares of vineyards composed of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot. The Château Lynch Moussas produces wines with a higher proportion of Merlot than most of its other Pauillac neighbours, so wines are softer and suppler as a result. The Château dates back to 1850 and was purchased by the owner of Château Batailley, Emile Castéja, in Since then, extensive replanting and modernisation has occurred across the estate which is reflected in the high quality of wine made today. R 2014 Château Lynch Moussas 75cl R 2012 Château Lynch Moussas 75cl Château Pedesclaux PAUILLAC Founded in 1810, the vineyard covers 46 hectares, planted to 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 48% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc. Substantial reinvestment has taken place here since 2011 under new ownership and the results are already very note worthy. Well worth a visit to view the state of the art winery and beautiful Château. R 2012 Fleur de Pedesclaux 75cl R 2013 Château Pedesclaux 75cl Château Olivier PESSAC-LÉOGNAN Surrounded by moats and an immense forest, this 12th century Château is truly a sight to behold. Fashioned by the terroir in which they are rooted, shaped by all those who work the vines day after day, the wines of Château Olivier are a magnificent expression of their appellation among the six Classified Growths of Graves. 10 Château de Fieuzal PESSAC-LÉOGNAN Fieuzal is named after the family who owned the property up to 1851, but is now owned by Irish wine lovers, Brenda and Lochlann Quinn, who acquired the Château in Their goal is to carefully tread the ever-evolving line between continuous technical improvements in winemaking and vine growing and maintaining the essential Graves nature of Fieuzal s wines. As part of the wine renaissance at Fieuzal, the vineyard is managed on a plot-by-plot basis, undergoing tailored winemaking processes to avoid masking or muting their distinct flavours and aromas. W 2016 L Abeille de Fieuzal Blanc 75cl R 2012 Château de Fieuzal Rouge 75cl R 2009 Château de Fieuzal Rouge 75cl Château La Dominique SAINT-ÉMILION La Dominique had an illustrious reputation in the 19th century but was in decline until purchased by Clément Fayat in 1969 who brought in consultant Michel Rolland. La Dominique vineyards adjoin those of Cheval Blanc, the soils are a mixture of limestone, gravel, sand and clay and the 22 hectares of vineyards are planted with Merlot (80%), Cabernet Franc (15%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (5%). The grapes are fermented in temperature-controlled, stainless steel tanks and the wine is then aged in oak barriques (50-60% new) for 18 months. R 2012 Relais de la Dominique 75cl R 2014 Relais de la Dominique 75cl R 2014 Château La Dominique 75cl Château Fonplégade SAINT-ÉMILION For centuries, the vine rows of Château Fonplégade have been the source for some of Saint-Émilion s most coveted grapes. Vines are grown in ideal limestone and clay soils and are nourished in drier years by the deep underground water source that feeds the fountain of Fonplégade. Vineyards are worked with organic practices combined with a meticulous hands-on approach to farming, with the average vine being over a quarter of a century in age. The vineyard is seven hectares in size, planted to 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. Marie-Bénédicte Lefévère took over management in 2009 with an intention to raise the estate to the top of the appelation, Château Sansonnet was deservedly promoted to Grand Cru Classé status in R 2013 Château Sansonnet 75cl R 2012 Château Sansonnet 75cl R 2012 Château Sansonnet 150cl Château Coutelin Merville SAINT-ESTÈPHE This 25 hectare Cru Bourgeois estate has been owned by the Estager family since 1902 and is currently run by the great-grandsons of the original owner, Bernard and François Estager. The vineyards can be found among the hills of Coutelin in the idyllic setting of Saint-Estèphe. Tradition rules the roost here, with hand harvesting in the vineyard and classic methods in the winery. R 2010 Coutelin Merville 75cl Château Montrose SAINT-ESTÈPHE One of the leading wine properties of Saint-Estèphe. Located on a gravel bed close to the Gironde estuary which ensures a microclimate that protects against frost. Typically a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, matured in oak barriques (30% new) for 18 months. Dame de Montrose is a serious wine in its own right. 11 Château du Gloria SAINT-JULIEN This young Château was created by Henri Martin in the 1940s. Its main peculiarity is in the fact that it was fully assembled by buying plots from surrounding Grand Cru classified properties. It now covers 50 hectares of vineyards acquired from Beychevelle, Léoville-Barton, Ducru-Beaucaillou, Lagrange and others. R 2010 Château du Gloria 75cl R 2015 Château du Gloria 75cl Château Lagrange SAINT-JULIEN Lagrange dates back to 1796, founded by Napoleon s finance minister, Count Jean Valère Cabarrus. Since 1983, it has received heavy new investment allowing it to live up to its 3ème Cru Classes status. The 120 hectares are under vine in a single block with wide soil variation, therefore each plot is managed, picked and fermented separately. The property has been awarded Grand Cru Classé (3rd Growth) status in the 1855 classification and is the only château still in the hands of the same family that was an owner at the time of the initial classifications. R 2009 Château Langoa Barton 75cl R 2010 Château Langoa Barton 75cl R 2011 Château Langoa Barton 75cl Château Léoville Barton SAINT-JULIEN Château Léoville Barton is the smallest of the Léovilles, there is no château and the wine is made at Langoa Barton. 48 hectares on gravellyclay soils, planted with Cabernet Sauvignon 72%, Merlot 20%, Cabernet Franc 8%. The wine is matured in oak barriques (50% new) for 18 months. There is such a following for these wines that they are often kept in private cellars making them hard to find. After Langoa Barton, Reserve and Mauvesin (a new addition in 2012) complete the family offering. One of the largest estates in the Médoc, its 102 hectare single vineyard is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon (66%), Merlot (26%), Cabernet Franc (3%), and Petit Verdot (5%) the vinification includes 18 months maturation in small oak barriques (50% new). 12 Sauternes Bordeaux s most famous region for producing dessert wine is situated 20 miles south of the city, spanning both banks of the Garonne and Ciron Rivers. These waterways provide the perfect misty morning microclimate to encourage the growth of Botrytis Cinerea (also known as Noble Rot). The rot attacks the grape evaporating the water, concentrating the sugar levels. Sauternes are some of the longest lived wines with premium examples from exceptional vintages having the potential to last 100 years or more. They are characterised by their balance of sweetness and zest of acidity with typical notes of apricots, honey, peaches with a nutty edge. 13 France : Burgundy Philippe Herard This beautifully made sparkler comes from former Champagne producer Philippe Herard who has found a new home in Burgundy s Côte d Or. It is made Methode Traditionelle (the second fermentation taking place in bottle) and all the winemaking skills of this long established winemaking family are brought into play to great effect. Many different grape varieties are employed, each carefully selected because they contribute something special to the final blend. The terroir ranges from stone and gravel to sand and limestone soils totalling 15 hectares of vines in Chateauneuf-du-Pape with plantings extending in to Côte du Rhône and d Orange. Their Sauvignon comes from the Gascony region to the west of Toulouse. The family s history of winemaking goes back more than a hundred years with the fourth generation now in charge. Their only wine is made from 100% Treixadura, a white grape variety found in the Ribeiro region, grown on nearly three hectares cultivated naturally and hand harvested. The grape must is drawn and fermented at very low temperatures to keep the aromatic concentration at its most pure and is then aged on the lees. The name derives from a long stretch of beach, which the winery overlooks called La Playa Lanzada. The family has been growing grapes and producing wine from their vines for generations, they have only recently made the wine commercially available to the general public. All of the vines are cultivated organically and hand harvested before undertaking fermentation in stainless steel tanks using indigenous yeasts. Waipara has a greater variation in temperature between night and day than more northerly Marlborough, yields are much lower, and this valley is fast establishing a reputation for quality.
