2 Chardonnay The Chardonnays we have chosen cover a fine cross section of styles from the unwooded easy drinking style through to the full bodied oak fermented and aged styles. Glenelly Grand Vin de Chardonnay (Wooded) 2011 Stellenbosch, Cape R195 This chardonnay shows a beautiful bright slightly straw colour with a nose that is vibrant with citrus, lime, hints of vanilla and underlying minerality. Warwick First Lady Chardonnay (Unoaked) 2011 Simonsberg, Stellenbosch, Cape *R120 Moorish fresh tropical fruit with obvious pears and citrus showing, softness on the palate. Morgenhof Chardonnay 2010 Stellenbosch, Cape R140 The nose is expressive of lime, kiwi and pineapple flavours. These tropical flavours follow through onto a crisp palate with subtle wood integration creating a rich lingering aftertaste. L Avenir Chardonnay 2010 Simonsberg, Stellenbosch, Cape *R120 Lightly-wooded, clean and elegant with delicate peachy fruit. Very European in style. Muratie Isabella Chardonnay 2011 Simonsberg, Stellenbosch, Cape R150 Creamy, brioche nose with elements of citrus adding a refreshing lift. A well-balanced Chardonnay for those who prefer them without obvious oak. Rietvallei Estate Natural Chardonnay 2011 Robertson, Cape *R95 Crisp and dry with hints of herbs and zestiness on the nose and palate - a joy for unwooded Chardonnay fans! 2

3 Sauvignon Blanc South Africa is making some delicious Sauvignon Blancs and it has clearly become the most popular white varietal enjoyed in the country. We have selected some varying styles, from the more austere, grassy, gravely style that comes from the cooler climes to the more tropical melon guava and pineapple styles of the hotter regions. Constantia Glen Sauvignon Blanc 2010 Constantia, Cape R150 Juicy passion fruit and gooseberry are underlined by leaner, steelier notes making this an excellent drink and a great food partner. Hidden Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2010 Paarl, Cape R125 This opulent Sauvignon Blanc shows delicious aromas of tropical melon, passion fruit and guava. Diamond Award and Winemakers Choice. Garden Route Sauvignon Blanc 2011 Outeniqua, Southern Cape *R95 A complex wine with tropical fruit and grassy flavours, supported a lovely earth minerality, typical of its cool climate origin Shannon Sauvignon Blanc 2011 Elgin, Cape R160 White asparagus and limes on the nose with a wonderful minerality and crispness on the palate. Warwick Professor Black Sauv. Blanc 2010 Stellenbosch, Cape R150 Well defined with lovely green fig and gooseberry freshness light and zesty. Fryer s Cove Bay to Bay Sauv. Blanc 2011 Bamboes Bay, Cape *R100 Unlike the flagship, the grapes for this Sauvignon come from the Fryers Cove vineyard and other surrounding West Coast vineyards. Complex minerality still remains the theme but a more accessible easy-drinking white. 3

4 Lands End Sauvignon Blanc 2011 Elim, Agulhas, Cape R125 Stunningly racy Sauvignon with touches of capsicum, fynbos and ingressive acids. Time on the lees has provided this wine with a fuller mouth feel and finish and renders it perfect for long lazy lunches as well for fine dining! Rietvallei Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2011 Robertson, Cape *R85 One of the best value-for-money Sauvignons around. Gentle, tropical fruit with lemon curd attraction. Very quaffable. Goedverwacht Crane Sauvignon Blanc 2011 Robertson, Cape *R75 Forward, fresh guava notes and tropical undertones make this attractive refreshing Sauvignon a great companion on a hot summer's day. Great value for money! Chenin Blanc This varietal still covers the largest vineyard area in the Cape and with it comes amazing versatility in styles. We have chosen wines all showing great drink ability without the big complexity and richness that some of the wooded Chenins possess. These examples go well with our style of cuisine. Veenwouden Vivat Bacchus Chenin Blanc 2011 Paarl, Cape *R85 Aromas of apricot, peach, some sweet floral notes and a hint of honey. Great balance and elegant body. L Avenir Chenin Blanc 2011 Stellenbosch, Cape R105 Splendid tropical fruit aromas with almost a peach and melon character showing through. The mouth feel is full and intense with a wonderfully rewarding finish. Great value for a quality wine Rietvallei Estate Chenin Blanc 2010 Robertson, Cape *R70 Abundant guava and pineapple fruit sensations on the nose with crisp acidity and firm finish. 4

5 Villiera Chenin Blanc 2011 Stellenbosch, Cape *R80 A balanced dry white wine, rich in character. The tropical aromas are enhanced by a hint of spice from the use of oak. Laibach Chenin Blanc 2011 Stellenbosch, Cape *R85 Rich apricot purity from old bush vines in the Bottelary Hills. Other White Grape Varieties and Blends South African wine trends are seeing a shift to unusual varieties and particularly blends which add a dynamic new taste profile to our wine enjoying experience. This past year we have discovered some real treats which we just had to share with you. Villiera Gewürtztraminer 2010 Stellenbosch, Cape *R90 An off dry white wine which is typically aromatic, showing intense lychee character and a hint of Turkish Delight. Creation Viognier 2009 Walker Bay, Cape R140 Un-oaked, floral white peach nose and a fresh dry acidity that is often missed on local examples. Overgaauw Sylvaner 2010 Stellenbosch, Cape *R80 This wine is refreshing and medium-bodied with aromas of pear, apricot, white fleshed peach and small traces of floral and spicy notes. Rustenberg Schoongezicht White 2010 Stellenbosch, Cape *R120 An attractive blend of Semillon, Viognier and Roussanne with aromas of peaches and cream that follow through to the pallet Altydgedacht Chatelaine 2011 Durbanville, Cape *R75 Approachable, light-hearted combination of Gewurztraminer and Riesling. Semi-sweet and extremely well-balanced. 5

6 De Krans Sunny Slopes NV Calitzdorp, Karoo *R70 This charming natural sweet wine is a delicious blend of Muscat Alexanderie and Chenin Blanc that seduces with its rose petal aroma and cardamom spice finish. Pink, Rosé, Blanc De Noir Or Just Pink Wines are all the Rage.. Rosé wines are loved as much for their attractive colour as for their taste. We have chosen these for their taste delicious easy quaffing wines that just bring a smile to your face! Enjoy! L Avenir Rosé 2011 Stellenbosch, Cape *R75 At last a true low-alcohol Rosé with a delicate pink colour, full of fresh, ripe strawberries and a long juicy ending. A truly enjoyable drink. Nabygelegen Rosé 2009 Wellington, Cape *R75 Dry, with a hint of strawberry, bramble and a racy squeeze of acidity. Morgenhof Fantail Pinotage Rosé 2011 Stellenbosch, Cape R75 This salmon pink wine show flavours of strawberries and raspberries. These flavours follow through onto a juicy pallet with a pleasing crisp finish. Goedverwacht Crane Shiraz Rosé 2011 Robertson, Cape *R75 A delightful salmon-coloured wine brimming with aromas of fresh raspberries and cherries. These carry trough to a juicy coloured which has a lingering, dry finish. Altydgedacht Cabernet Franc Blanc de Noir 2011 Durbanville, Cape R75 Delightful, easy-drinking style with good varietal character and hints of floral spice and lively cramberry intensity. 6

7 Bordeaux Styled Cabernet based Blends Probably the ultimate skill of a wine maker is the art of blending. In the case of Bordeaux styled reds the ability to marry the dominant Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and even Petit Verdot varietals into an harmonious unity takes great skill. Often these are the best examples of fine wines in South Africa. Constantia Glen Three 2009 Constantia Cape R230 Light fine boned 'claret' styled red that is more juicy and approachable at this stage with lots of freshness and Succulent tannins drinking now but will age beautifully over the next 5 years or so. Muratie Ansela 2007 Simonsberg, Cape R280 Muratie's flagship honours Ansela van de Caap, a slave who was emancipated 320 years ago. Wonderful heady complex fruit draped around well integrated tannins from two years French oak maturation. A blend of Merlot (60%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (40%) La Bri Affinity 2006 Franschhoek, Cape *R150 This flagship red bordeaux-styled blend shows fine structure and the good use of the petit verdot grape. Delicious balance and roundness at the conclusion. Rietvallei Estate Esteanna 2008 Robertson, Cape R275 New premium red blend which brings together the estate's top Cabernet with other bordeaux components. This wine has all the hallmarks of a fine wine: rich, ripe berry fruit and added complexity from fellow varietals Cabernet franc and Malbec. Hidden Valley Hidden Gems 2008 Helderberg, Cape *R195 Rich, dark berries with subtle and elegant oaking impress on this new release - a blend of Cabernet, Malbec and equal parts Petit verdot and Merlot. Delicious savoury ending. 7

8 Morkel (Bellevue) Tumara 2005 Stellenbosch, Cape R195 The wine offers luscious cassis aromas, flavours of mint and elegant use of oak during maturation. Stylish blend that never disappoints. Cabernet Sauvignon The King of Red wines tends to be a Full-bodied Red Wine in its eventual drinking form. We have chosen wines that are just that but also show superb elegance and character befitting some of the best in the country. These ones we particularly like... Rietvallei Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 Robertson, Cape *R110 Wonderful full cassis on bitter chocolate platform. This wine is perfect as an everyday drink but will keep and reward the patient. Great value for money. Goedverwacht Maxim Cab.Sauvignon 2007 Robertson, Cape R250 The Goedverwacht Flagship Red. A beautiful example of a Robertson Cabernet sauvignon: packed with ripe plums, backed with fine tannins from new French oak maturation. Le Riche Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 Jonkershoek, Stellenbosch, Cape R260 This finely-grained wine has cassis and bramble impressions backed with perfectly integrated tannins. Warwick First Lady Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 Simonsberg, Stellenbosch, Cape *R120 Named after founder and winemaker Norma Ratcliffe, this wine has been a hit from the start. This vintage is predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon and the wine offers upfront blackberry fruit with fine wood integration. Rainbow s End Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 Banghoek, Stellenbosch, Cape *R165 Deep cassis and earthy herbal notes mingle with sweet oak flavours leading to a lively juicy finish. 8

9 Shiraz/Syrah An increasingly popular wine variety internationally that is doing exceptionally well in South Africa. They vary from big bold fruit driven wines to gorgeous velvety reds with dark mocha and black berry fruits within the structure. Great food wines. Lands End Syrah 2009 Agulhas, Cape R250 Dark chocolate, spice, white pepper and layers of dark cherry and plum. The nose has definite hints of sea breeze. Veenwouden Syrah 2007 Paarl, Cape R300 Elegant white pepper notes, violets, spice and cherries overlying extremely well-integrated tannins. Classic in style and perfect for that special occasion. Muratie Shiraz 2008 Stellenbosch, Cape *R175 Seductive fragrance of cherries, leather and vanilla. A full-bodied wine, powerfully orchestrated by 35% new French oak and 20% American oak maturation. Keeping will be well rewarded. Glenelly Shiraz 2009 Stellenbosh, Cape *R130 The glass collection Syrah is a dark rich coloured wine that displays luscious, complex dark berry core with hints of violets and spicy plums. Garden Route Shiraz 2011 Outeniqua, Cape *R120 This multi-layered wine has ripe, dense fruit flavours and is in perfect balance with the creamy, rich vanilla-oak. 9

10 Merlot More and more this varietal is becoming popular for its drinkablity, soft tannins and just great enjoyment. It can be enjoyed at lunch and dinner and even slightly chilled on hotter days makes for a rewarding drink. Shannon Mount Bullet Merlot 2009 Elgin, Cape R395 Sugared plums, violets and tomato lead a savoury element packed with concentrated fruits that explode in your mouth. Still quite closed but will be a real find for the person trying these wines for the first time. Goedverwacht Crane Red Merlot 2011 Robertson, Cape *R80 Wonderful quaffing red with warm mocha and ripe black cherries on the nose that enhance this youthful but cleverly made soft red. Morgenhof Merlot 2009 Stellenbosch, Cape *R190 A lovely ruby colour, the nose of this wine is full of black cherries, mulberries and spicy flavours. These flavours carry through and finishes on a lingering, rich fruit palate with a smooth aftertaste Veenwouden Merlot 2008 Paarl, Cape R395 The wine that put Veenwouden on the international wine map. Beautiful fleshy fruit with sumptuous folds of powdery tannins. A must for any discerning lover of wine. Glenelly Merlot 2010 Stellenbosch, Cape *R130 This deep rich coloured wine displays intense dark fruit aromas and spicy plums showing tremendous concentration and generous fruit on the palate. 10

11 Pinotage Our own truly South African varietal that is starting to be grown in other vineyards of the world such as New Zealand. It always shows wonderful rich sweet berry fruits with a hint of plum jam on the nose and has been added to a number of other varietals often forming a unique Cape blend Morkel (Bellevue) Pinotage 2009 Bottelary, Stellenbosch, Cape *R150 A superb, modern styled Pinotage. Sweet berry fruit and fresh violets woo nose and palate and gentle tannins make this wine exceptionally drinkable - a joy to see this kind of Pinotage being made. Multiple award winner. Hidden Valley Pinotage 2009 Helderberg, Stellenbosch, Cape R150 Bright, redcurrant flavours drive this attractive wine. An extremely popular Pinotage that is both juicy and appealing on the palate. A very versatile food companion. L Avenir Pinotage 2009 Simonsberg, Stellenbosch, Cape *R150 Textbook Pinotage - wild berry bouquet with friendly tannins and a smattering of minerally, earthy notes to conclude. 13 months in 50% new French oak give a beautiful frame to this juicy wine. De Krans Pinotage 2010 Calitzdorp, Klein Karoo, Cape *R95 Very quaffable ripe cranberry fruit driven, with gently oaking. Unpretentious and very gluggable! Altydgedacht Pinotage 2011 Durbanville, Cape *R150 Fragrant, wild berry aromas and flavours with firm tannins to finish. Great all round award-winning wine. 11

12 Pinot Noir This wonderful red varietal made famous in Burgundy, France is an extremely difficult varietal to perfect in the Southern Hemisphere yet when it is the reward is enormous. These examples are quite different from one another but all show delicious Pinot Noir Raspberry characteristics on the nose and are delicious with food. Not too heavy but elegant and soft. Shannon Rockview Pinot Noir 2008 Elgin, Cape R370 Flavours ranging from vibrant cherry, raspberry, black currants, to liquorice and cinnamon. Great depth and long finish. Muratie Pinot Noir 2010 Simonsberg, Stellenbosch, Cape *R240 SA's first Pinot Noir planted over 75 years ago. The nose shows gamey aromas with delicate redcurrant and strawberry fruit following through onto the palate. Complex yet elegant, this is one of the Cape's better Pinots. Fryer s Cove Pinot Noir 2010 Bamboes Bay, West Coast, Cape R240 At last a Pinot noir with many of the classic strawberry fruit notes of a true Burgundian style and with the truffles too!! A great drink served lightly chilled at a summer's lunch. Creation Pinot Noir 2010 Walker Bay, Cape R240 Delicious 'New World Styling" with strawberry and raspberry tones shown on this wine. One of the most exciting Pinot Noirs to come out of the Hemel en Aarde Valley in Walker Bay for some time 10 months in French oak with 25% of it new oak. Rietvallei Estate Pinot Noir 2010 Robertson, Cape *R135 A Pinot Noir with many of the classic strawberry fruit notes on the nose from this first vintage of the Rietvallei Estate. 13 As in the case of the whites there are some stunning new varietals and taste sensations in the unusual red wines on the market available to us and we are sure you ll enjoy them as we do. Please ask for any advice on a wine that may not be familiar to you. These reds include some delicious blends that made from mainly Non Cabernet based varietals but all have a wonderful moorish quality that lends themselves to our creative dishes. They are also great value for money wines that are drinking well now. Altydgedacht Barbera 2010 Durbanville, Cape R140 South African pioneer of this varietal. Earthy, dried herb notes combine with bright berry fruit, the tannins and acid nicely in balance. Great with Italian fare. Creation Syrah/Grenache 2010 Walker Bay, Cape R190 Aromas of sun-dried tomato and curry leaves entice whilst the palate is rich and extra juicy with well-integrated oak. Delicious with any Mediterranean-styled foods. Morkel (Bellevue) Malbec 2009 Bottelary, Stellenbosch, Cape *R150 Elegant, finely-textured, exudes chocolate and mint on the nose invites a leg of lamb to accompany it!! Delicious soft gentle tannins. The wine always seems a hit at tastings and over fine meaty dinners. De Krans Tinta Mocha 2010 Calitzdorp, Klein Karoo, Cape R90 A fashionably bold intense mocha-coffee and chocolate flavoured style wine. Concentrated ripe plum and mulberry fruit on the palate is backed by firm, juicy tannins. Rainbow s End Cabernet Franc 2009 Banghoek, Stellenboch, Cape R190 Earthy, peppery, cassis and mint chocolate flavours. Full bodied with a firm oaky grip and blackberry tang. Muratie Melck s Red 2010 Simonsberg, Stellenbosch, Cape *R95 13

14 The wine is a soft, fruity, easy, and accessible red wine (Cabernet Sauvignon 60% and Shiraz 40%) with good structured ripe tannins. It is ideal for your everyday drinking; a suitable companion for pizza, pasta and meat dishes. Veenwouden Vivat Bacchus Merlot/Shiraz 2010 Paarl, Cape R120 This delicious red has characters of plum and cherry with an added dollop of spice but soft and juicy also. Hidden Valley Secret 2008 Helderberg, Western Cape R195 Shiraz and Mouvedre in Rhone style with a touch of the characterful Tannat grape also in the blend. Spicy, white pepper elements add a pleasant savouriness to the tail! Glenelley Grand Vin de Glenelly 2007 Stellenbosch, Cape R300 This is the signature red blend of the Estate. The wine has a deep, dark, rich colour offering an elegant complex bouquet developing aromas of cassis, spicy plums and notes of toast in the background. Warwick Three Cape Ladies (Cape blend) 2009 Simonsberg, Stellenbosch, Cape *R195 A great example of a truly South African blend. The components are Cabernet, Pinotage and Merlot with a touch of Shiraz. Sumptuous, well balanced, a Cape classic! Creation Whale Pod 2010 Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge *R110. Flamboyant fleshy Cabernet-based blend that shows fine middle palate and soft tannins perfect for everyday enjoyment Laibach Red Ladybird 2010 Simonsberg, Stellenbosch, Cape *R150 A certified organic farm with this early emphasis on natural wine growing. A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet in the bordeaux style. Ports, Muscadels, and Wonderful Stickies 14

15 Why not indulge in a few of these after a fine meal We love this tradition and hope you do PER GLASS: Muratie Cape Vintage 2006 Simonsberg, Stellenbosch, Cape R20 A finely made, classic 'vintage'-styled SA port using the four traditional Portuguese varieties. Sweet fruitcake and plum flavours make this limited release vintage something to look out for. Muratie Cape Ruby NV Simonsberg, Stellenbosch, Cape R15 A very popular 'ruby'-styled port: juicy, full-flavoured with just a hint of spice. De Krans Vintage Reserve 2004 Calitzdorp, Klein Karoo, Cape R20 The wine shows a vibrant plum colour, with dense aromas of prune, spice and tobacco. A fleshy, chewy mouthful of flavours, showing tannic grip, concentrated red fruit nuances, and a firm structure ensuring considerable longevity. Morgenhof Cape Vintage Port 2003 Stellenbosch, Cape R20 The fortified wine invites you to a nose filled with black cherries, liquorice, raisins and walnuts. These flavours follow through onto a rich and velvety palate covered with round tannins to end with a lovely balance. Overgaauw Port 2002 Stellenbosch, Cape R20 Matured in the classic Port tradition and bottled and filtered it has a deceivingly youthful bouquet. Elegant with great depth and complexity a mélange of berry fruits, plums, orange zest and seductive whiffs of spices. De Krans Cape Tawny NV Calitzdorp, Klein Karoo, Cape R15 A sweetish port with rich aromatic flavours and a hint of tangy dark caramel toffee. De Krans Pink Port NV Calitzdorp, Klein Karoo, Cape R15 This cheeky little devil is strawberry and candy floss on the nose. It is invitingly Pink in colour which comes from just 6 hours on the red Port varietal skins before being whipped away for light fortification. - quite delicious. 16 This fortified wine is dark and rich in colour, with pleasant aromas of freshly ground coffee and layers of dark fruit. It has a firm structure and a lingering, aromatic aftertaste. Rietvallei Estate Muscadel 20 Robertson, Cape R20 A classic Red Muscadel and one of the Cape's most popular. Raisins and Rooibos with a touch of grapiness give this sweet rich dessert wine great appeal. De Krans Reserve Muscat (Fortified) 20 Calitzdorp, Cape 375ml R75 Wonderful Muscat grapes are selected and pressed from old vines. The result shows ample litchi and soft tannins.
