3 Guest Policymaker Panelists Steve Lavagnino 5th District Supervisor, Santa Barbara County Steve Lavagnino is a member of the County Board of Supervisors where has represented the Fifth District, including the City of Santa Maria, for the last 6 years. Prior to his first election in 2010, Lavagnino was the Deputy Chief of Staff to Congressman Elton Gallegly where he helped over 60 young men and women receive appointments to our nation s prestigious service academies. Based on his commitment level, the United States Military Academy bestowed on him the title of Friend of West Point. Lavagnino is the founder and driving force behind the annual Veterans Stand Down event aimed at providing homeless and near homeless veterans all the services they need to reconnect to the community. Based on his work for veterans, he was named the Elks Citizen of the Year in 2013 and in 2015 he was named as an honorary lifetime member of the Vietnam Veterans of America. Das Williams 1st District Supervisor, Santa Barbara County Supervisor Das Williams was elected to represent the First District of Santa Barbara County in June, Williams previously represented the area, along with over half of Santa Barbara County and a quarter of Ventura County in the California State Assembly from Prior to his service in the Assembly, Williams served seven years on the Santa Barbara City Council from A champion for local renewable energy and emergency preparedness, Williams grew up in Santa Barbara County, taught at Antioch University and also served as a trustee for Peabody Charter School in Santa Barbara. He served as a legislative aide to California State Assemblymember Hannah-Beth Jackson and holds a Master s degree in Environmental Science and Management. John Peschong 1st District Supervisor, San Luis Obispo County John Peschong is San Luis Obispo County s First District Supervisor and Chairman of the Board for The First District includes the City of Paso Robles as well as much of the vast wine producing region in north SLO County, an area of 250 wineries. A third-generation Californian, Peschong has a passion for protecting taxpayers. He previously served as President of the Central Coast Taxpayers Association, keeping watch on local public agencies for efficient use of taxpayer dollars. An appointee to the California Mid-State Fair Board of Directors, Peschong spent eight years coordinating the annual 12-day fair in Paso Robles, helping to educate youth on the important role agriculture plays in the region. A firm believer in youth development, Peschong has served or supported several youth organizations, such as the Templeton Education Foundation, the Paso Robles Children s Museum and the local 4-H. Fiercely committed to preserving SLO County s agricultural character, Peschong remains a major supporter of both the Cattlemen s Association and the SLO County Farm Bureau.

4 Keynote Presenter and Moderators KEYNOTE Robert McMillan EVP and Founder, Silicon Valley Bank Wine Division Rob has been thrice named as one of the Top 50 Most Influential People in the US Wine Industry, the only banker ever recognized. He has been authoring Silicon Valley Bank s views on the industry, as well as the highly regarded State of the Wine Industry Report for over 20 years. He is the founder of the Bank s wine division, which is recognized as the leading provider of financial services to the US fine wine business. A frequent media commentator, conference speaker, lecturer at several West Coast universities and regular blogger, Rob s informed opinions are trusted by wine producers, importers and financiers alike. He has served in a variety of Board capacities over the course of his career in diverse industries, and continues to do so today within the wine space. MODERATORS Wine and Tourism A Perfect Pairing? Gabriel Saglie Sr. Editor, Travelzoo/Wine Columnist, Santa Barbara News Press Travelzoo s Senior Editor, Gabe Saglie, is a leading expert on travel deals, tips and trends. He has appeared on dozens of highly-rated networks, including NBC, CNN and Fox News, as well as affiliate stations in top TV markets around the country, including New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas and San Francisco. Gabe is also regularly quoted in major publications like the New York Times, Boston Globe, and US News and World Report. He also writes a regular destinations column for ABC News Travel. He is a longtime wine and food writer, too, and currently serves as the wine columnist for the Santa Barbara News Press. Gabe is a Chilean native born in Norway to globetrotting parents. He has traveled to more than 20 countries and is fluent in Spanish, French and English. Gabe s travel experiences allow him to be one of the industry s foremost consumer travel advocates. Wine, Visitors, Venues and Regulations Mike Brown Former Santa Barbara County CEO Mike Brown is a financial, management and strategic planning consultant to civic groups, universities, and local governments. He earned his BA in Government from California State University, Northridge and his MA in Public Administration from the University of Texas at Austin, going on to a 42-year career in local government management. His positions included service as Deputy City Manager of Hartford, Connecticut; Chief Deputy Commissioner of the Connecticut State Department of Housing; City Manager of Berkeley; City Manager of Tucson; and, more recently, County Executive Officer for Santa Barbara County, a position in which he served for 14 years. His post-graduate work included studies at University of Arizona, Eller College of Management; the UC Berkeley Goldman School of Public Policy; the NYU Real Estate Institute and the Yale School of Management. He currently serves as San Luis Obispo County director for the Coalition for Labor, Agriculture and Business. Mike s awards are too numerous to mention, but have included the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) Distinguished Budget Award (14 consecutive years in Santa Barbara County); the ICMA Center for Performance Management Distinguished Award for Use of Performance Measures and a Carnegie-Mellon University Award for Innovative Use of Information Technology. He was peer-selected to serve as Chairman of the ICMA s Center for Performance Management for over a decade. As a city manager and county executive officer, Mike had full charter responsibility for leading major urban governments with over 500 employees, assets of over two billion dollars, and annual operating budgets of $900 million.

6 Panelists PANELISTS: Direct to Consumer Sales Key to Financial Sustainability? Francesca Lindley Director, Direct-to-Consumer Sales, Sanford Winery After leaving a successful 20 year career in the entertainment industry as CFO for several well-known film production companies, Francesca ( Frankie ) Lindley moved her interests to the business of wine, learning the ropes from the ground up. She began with planting a small vineyard at the far west of Sta. Rita Hills AVA, setting up the infrastructure and operations for growing the wine business and vineyard. In early 2014, Lindley was hired as the Director, Direct-to-Consumer Sales for Sanford Winery and Vineyards. With her leadership and financial acumen, Lindley has provided strategic, financial, operational and tactical leadership for the DTC business and grown both revenue and operating income across all business channels significantly. Sonja Magdevski Owner, Casa Dumetz Wines Sonja Magdevski is winemaker/owner of Casa Dumetz Wines, a small boutique producer in love with Grenache and specializing in Santa Barbara Rhone varietals. Magdevski is also a journalist currently writing a series of articles for Edible Santa Barbara on the AVAs of Santa Barbara County. During non-harvest months, you can find her most days at her tasting room in historic Los Alamos, creating wine experiences at Casa Dumetz and craft beer tastings at Babi s Beer Emporium next door. Katy Rogers Director of Direct to Consumer South Coast, Jackson Family Wines Katy Rogers, a Cal Poly San Luis Obispo graduate, has brought her entrepreneurial spirit to many successful Santa Barbara County wineries. These wineries include Cambria, Byron, Presqui ile, and recently Brewer-Clifton. Rogers is currently the Director of DTC sales for Jackson Family Wines covering all brands in Southern California. PANELISTS: Wine and Tourism A Perfect Pairing? Glenn Morris CEO, Santa Maria Valley Chamber/Santa Maria Valley Convention & Visitors Bureau Glenn Morris currently serves as President and CEO for the Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce. In this role, he provides leadership for the Chamber s role as the leading business service, economic development and tourism promotion agency in northern Santa Barbara County. Morris has now led the launch of two significant tourism initiatives, including a new Convention/Visitors Bureau in the Central Valley and the Tourism Marketing District program here in the Santa Maria Valley. Paul Patel Board President, Explore Lompoc Paul Patel, Board President of the Explore Lompoc marketing program, is owner and general manager of the Lompoc Valley Inn & Suites. His family has been in the hotel business in Lompoc since Shelby Sim Executive Director, Visit Santa Ynez Valley Shelby Sim grew up in the Santa Barbara, California area. He left at 21, living and working all over the United States and traveling the world. He returned to Santa Barbara in 2000 and started working on weekends in the Santa Ynez Valley for wine and pocket change. He worked at a tasting room in Solvang during the SIDEWAYS craze, then later as a wine tour host, all while employed as Director of Business Development with the Goleta Chamber of Commerce, and later as Sales Manager for Bacara Resort and Spa. He was brought on as Executive Director of Visit Santa Ynez Valley in August of Jennifer Walker VP, Marketing & Strategy, Visit Santa Barbara Since December of 2015, Jennifer Walker has served Visit Santa Barbara as Vice President of Marketing and Strategy. For seven years prior, she was Director of Communications for Austin Convention & Visitors Bureau, where she effectively managed an ad company budget of $3 million. Her early career experience was in managing high profile advertising account portfolios in three different ad agencies. Walker has a bachelor s degree in Communications from UCSB.

Not only is the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians one of the few tribes in the United States to own a vineyard and produce its own wine, it is the first that has one of its own members as the winemaker.
