1 Parkview Middle School NEWSLETTER MARCH 2017 Hello Parkview Parents, Happy almost spring, as March has certainly come in like a lion! With the month of March comes the opportunity to talk to your son/daughter s teachers about his/her progress in class at Parent Teacher Conferences, and we are looking forward to seeing you at school! When you are here for conferences, remember to stop in the commons to see the various opportunities available, including a March of Dimes table, Smart Cow Frozen Yogurt to Go, and Seroogy s and Chicks n Dip fundraisers. You can also scour the Lost & Found table to find anything that may be lost from your household! Today, your son/daughter should be bringing home flyers and information regarding our two spring fundraisers. Seroogy s is a regular spring fundraiser and again offers chocolates and coffee for Easter baskets, Mother s Day and other spring celebrations. Chics n Dip is a new fundraiser for our PFC that offers yummy pre-made dip and bread recipes. Most dips need cream cheese and/or sour cream added to them and are ready to go. They are budget-friendly (most are $5-$6 each) and a unique gift idea for many different occasions! My favorites are Parmesan Herb, More for Me Toffee and the sports packs! I encourage you to give the dips a try. All students who sell at least 5 items will be entered into our random drawing for prizes! All orders are due back to school by March 17 th. If you are the parent of an 8 th grader and are interested in helping the Parent Faculty Club with various end-of-the-year events for the 8 th grade student body, please send an to either one of our Co-Presidents: Kate Busch (k8busch@yahoo.com) or Tracy Cavin (tcavin@att.net). The two main events that we will need parent leadership and involvement are the 8 th grade picnic and decorating for the 8 th grade Recognition Ceremony. We will contact you when we have our first planning meeting scheduled. Please mark your calendars for the 8 th grade Recognition Ceremony which will be at 6:30 p.m. on June 6 th in the Parkview gym. As we are well into the second semester of the year, please continue to encourage your child to do his/her best. As the end of winter and the onset of spring approaches, it can become increasingly difficult for students to concentrate on the responsibilities of school, but the rewards for doing so are worth the effort. We also ask for your continued help in reminding students to Keep It REAL by following the rules and policies of Parkview Middle School. We are looking forward to wrapping up the year on a positive note together! Enjoy the month of March and your week of Spring Break ahead! As always, please do not hesitate to call if you have any questions. Thank you for the continued partnership and support in your child's education. Sincerely, Kris Hucek Principal

4 INFLUENZA UPDATE Submitted by Mary Jo Beining, BSN, RN, School District Nurse and Lori Cavil, BSN, RN, School District Nurse There is currently a high amount of influenza activity in northeastern Wisconsin, and our schools reflect the overall trend in our community. Therefore, practice good hand washing and cover any coughs or sneezes using the crux of your elbow or your sleeve, NOT your hands. Here are some guidelines to help you determine if influenza has struck your household: Is it a Cold or the Flu? The answer matters, because treatments and complications may differ. Cold (viral upper respiratory illness): Often gradual onset with runny nose, cough, sore throat (more likely mild), no fever or low fever, mild fatigue, and mild or no muscle aches Flu (influenza): Abrupt onset with runny nose, cough, sore throat and headache (more likely severe), fever usually 101 F or higher and chills, moderate to severe fatigue and weakness, and achy muscles. Colds are usually serious only in people with lung disease or another major illness. On the other hand, influenza can be serious for older people and for those with weakened immune systems or chronic illnesses. It can be followed by a bacterial infection, such as bacterial pneumonia. If started early, antiviral medications may shorten the illness. Remember that antibiotics don t help shorten colds or the flu. The flu shot is your best defense against influenza. Contact your physician or local health department for more information.

5 Learn Create Share Grab a Book and Read with the Cat on March 2 nd All across the nation, students, staff and parents alike, will be found observing the National Education Association's annual Read Across America Day on Monday, March 2 nd. NEA is calling all of America's children, both young and old, to reward their learning by celebrating the joys of reading with Dr. Seuss on his (would be) 113th birthday by taking time out of their busy day to sit down and enjoy the value of reading. During this week students and staff will be able to show off their Dr. Seuss knowledge during our trivia contest, so brush up on Green Eggs and Ham and Hop on Pop. Grab a book on March 2 nd and celebrate over a century of achievements by America's most beloved children's author, Dr. Seuss. March Madness is coming Parkview will again be participating in our own version of March Madness when our favorite series are faced off against one another. Which one will come out on top this year? Can you predict the upsets? Other Upcoming your library April 9-15 National Library Week: Communities your library! 6 MARCH MUSIC LETTER th Grade Band Exchange Concert On Thursday, March 16 th during 6th grade Specials' time, the Lineville Intermediate School 6th grade band will be visiting Parkview. We will have the two bands; Lineville and Parkview (300+ 6th grade band students from the two schools) perform for each other and do a combined piece at the end. We are planning the concert for 10:15 am and should be wrapping things up around 11:30 am. Thank you to all staff for being flexible and helping us plan this incredible opportunity for our 6th grade bands. *Unfortunately due to space limitations this concert is strictly for the students to perform for each other, so we apologize that we will not be able to have a parent audience for this concert. Thank you for understanding! Solo and Ensemble Solo and Ensemble is being held on Friday, March 10 th and Saturday, March 11 th at Ashwaubenon High School. Several 7 th and 8 th grade band and choir students are participating in various events. If your son/daughter is participating in this performance opportunity, they need to be sure they are in attendance for their event at their assigned time. A schedule for our school s participants, along with a map of AHS and other pertinent information, will be provided as soon as it becomes available. Please be sure to have your son/daughter check with their director to obtain a schedule. Please plan accordingly so your schedule will allow for you to bring your son/daughter to Ashwaubenon High School on their assigned day and time. If your child is in more than one event, his/her times may be spread throughout the day. Since transportation is not provided by the school for this event, you are responsible for bringing your child to and from the festival or arranging transportation for them. Students who fail to appear for their event will be asked to pay the associated entry fee(s). Please contact either Ms. Hanna, ext. 4201, Mrs. Kuchta, ext. 4202, or Ms. Moody ext if you have further questions about Solo and Ensemble. The students have been working very hard on their pieces and we are all looking forward to a wonderful day! Solo and Ensemble is free of charge and open to the public. We invite and encourage families and friends to attend and be supportive audience members. This would be an excellent opportunity for other music students who are not participating to become familiar with the festival since they may be participating next year. It is also a great opportunity for all participants and guests to hear other musicians from the area.

7 Spring Concert Dates Please mark your calendars with the following concert dates. All concerts are held in the Parkview Gym. All are invited and welcome to attend these performances. Spring Band Concerts Monday, May 8, th grade at 6:00 PM, 7 th & 8 th grade bands at 7:00 PM Spring Choir Concerts Tuesday, May 9, th, 7th & 8th grade 6:00 p.m Parkview Talent Show Auditions have been completed for this year s talent show and we congratulate all of the students who auditioned this year! All participants must attend or they will not be able to perform in the Talent Show. Students need to bring all equipment, props, costumes and materials necessary for their act on that day for this rehearsal. The dress rehearsal for the talent show will be held on Friday morning, March 24 th during the school day. As the students performing in the talent show will be missing their regular classes that morning, they need to notify their teachers well in advance of their absence and make up any work they will miss prior to March 24 th.
