1 The Sandon School Newsletter 14 December 2017 Dear Parents and Carers As we come to the end of a very long and busy term, once again we can look back and appreciate the enthusiasm of our students to join in the wide variety of extra-curricular activities that take place in and around school. You will have seen in the newsletters this term reports on a range of sporting activities, performing arts events and fundraising events for charity, as well as reports on a number of educational visits that have taken place. The Hollywood Dance Show last week and RIP Mr Shakespeare the week before provided opportunities to showcase some of the incredibly talented performers within the school. Tonight we have our ever-popular Christmas Concert and next week we will be welcoming back many of last year s year 13 students to the A2 Certificate Evening. Our Year 11 students have been sitting their Mock Examinations this month and we are looking forward to seeing their hard work produce results which reflect the aspirations we have for their year group. As we move into the New Year, with the worst of the weather potentially still to come, I would ask parents and carers to ensure that up-to-date contact details, particularly mobile phone numbers, are logged with the school. Groupcall messages will be used to keep you informed should bad weather affect the normal school day, and the website will be kept updated. Finally I wish you all a very happy Christmas and I look forward to your continued support in the New Year. J C Wincott EARLY CLOSURE WEDNESDAY, 20 DECEMBER 2017 School will finish at 1.00 pm next Wednesday for the Christmas break. Students will be dismissed from their form rooms and buses will be waiting for them as usual on an early finish day. School restarts on Wednesday, 3 January 2018.

3 VISIT BY EZEKIEL EWULO On Monday, 4 December, the Gifted and Talented PE programme students were very lucky to meet and train with an international Nigerian/Great British athlete. When the long jumper, Ezekiel Ewulo (his nickname is Zeeks) finally arrived, everyone jumped out of their seats with excitement. After he had set up his presentation, we sat back and listened to the information about his thrilling career. He showed us some of his many medals and great achievements such as the Great British Team t-shirt and his incredible jump of 8.90 metres in slow -motion; it was like he was walking in the air! We can t believe that someone can jump so far. Once we had asked him questions, we left the hall to get something to eat so we would be pumped with energy for the training after break. As we arrived at the sports hall for the training with Zeeks, it was set up already and we were all curious about what we were going to do. We were taught many warm up exercises and lots of new training skills that many athletes use to warm up before competing. He showed us how to improve skills such as running techniques and jumping, also how to improve our strength. By collecting sponsors from family and friends we raised around with a proportion going to the school for future Gifted and Talented events and a proportion going towards unsponsored British athletes to help improve British sport. If we collected certain amounts of money we could receive a gift from Zeeks such as a postcard, a poster or a signed photo. Everyone received a sticker! It was great spending the morning with an athlete. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed it and we are looking forward to the next gifted and talented reward. Thank you Mrs Allen for making this happen and thank you Zeeks for coming and sharing your skills and achievements with us. Kerry Stockley and Mia Berry Year 8

6 CARPENTER WANTED! We have a number of honours boards within school and are looking to get a new one made for the PE department to match the one shown here. If you feel that you might have the skills to enable you to help out, please would you contact Mrs Hampton in the first instance by at jhm@sandon.essex.sch.uk Thank you.
