1 The Sandon School Newsletter 9 November 2017 CHELMSFORD SCHOOLS SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL Students from years 9 and 10 performed on 31 October at Boswells School as part of the Chelmsford Schools Shakespeare Festival. The performance was an extract of RIP Mr Shakespeare by Bev Clark. It was wonderful to see the hard work of the students so well received and the night was an enjoyable success. The students as the clown characters were hilarious, as well as Mr Shakespeare and the wonderful Dennis the servant. We now look forward to performing the piece in full in the drama studio on the evenings of 29 and 30 November. Many thanks to all involved. Mr G Danko
2 BIOLOGY TRIP TO CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY On 8 November 2017, Year 12 and 13 Biology students went to Cambridge University to listen to three scientists talk about their specialist topics. First up was Lord Robert Winston, Professor of Science and Society at Imperial College, medical doctor, scientist, television presenter on Reproduction. He discussed the social aspects of science and how humans are affected by the environment, not just their genes. He talked about how theoretically we can edit genes and wipe out disease but realistically it is impossible and not ethical. Another professor, Prof. Beverley Glover, Professor of Plant Systematics and Evolution in the Department of Plant Sciences at the University of Cambridge and Director of the Cambridge University Botanic Garden on Plant Science, who studies plant science, discussed how plants breed, eat and overcome complex problems. In particular, she explained how they are able to adapt their flowers and patterns to attract appropriate pollinators in order to survive and pass on their gametes. The final topic was delivered by Prof. Steve Humphries, PhD, MRCP, FRCPath. Steve Humphries is a world-renowned expert in cardiovascular genetics, a field in which he has worked for over 30 years on Heart Disease. His talk looked at how different factors affect the likelihood of a heart attack. He mainly focused on LDL cholesterol build up and ways to reduce this. He also explained how this disease is extremely common and how it can be passed on genetically. All three talks, looked at how science is interconnected with many other subjects such as history, physiology and maths. The day was very interesting and covered a wide range of topics. Attending these talks was extremely beneficial to us and will help develop our current understanding of topics we cover over the course. Thanks to Mr Wincott and Mrs Holmes for allowing this to happen Abigail Grigg WORK EXPERIENCE As part of the important preparation for their next steps, we encourage and support our Sixth Form students to undertake work experience that will help them in their career choices and aspirations. Increasingly, it is a real challenge for students to secure work experience placements, especially in those fields where competition for jobs is strong. We would be very grateful if any parents were able to offer work experience opportunities - either at their own place of work or through any contact they may have. Some of the fields we are finding it especially difficult to secure opportunities are as follows: MEDICINE, PHARMACY, MIDWIFERY, ENGINEERING, ACCOUNTANCY & FINANCE, NURSING, DIGITAL MEDIA AND ICT, LAW. If any parents are able to support our Sixth Form students in any way with their work experience, I would be very grateful if you could contact me at school hne@sandon.essex.sch.uk. With thanks Helen Newman Assistant Headteacher, Director of Key stage 5
3 SCOTT HUNTLEY Year 11 student, Scott Huntley, witnessed the first public run of BLOODHOUND SSC while at a VIP day during half term. The BLOODHOUND SSC, Britain s 1000mph world land speed record challenger, was driven at 210mph at Newquay Airport. The test, saw the world s fastest man of the past 20 years, RAF Wing Commander Andy Green, at the wheel for the first time. Green and his team ran the jet and rocket-powered car up to and beyond 200mph, using its EJ200 Eurofighter engine on the Cornish airport's main runway and pushing it to maximum reheat - or afterburner - phase. The two runs, each of which saw the car accelerate from zero to 200mph in just under 1300 metres, have been used to evaluate the car s steering, brakes, suspension and data systems & EJ200 jet engine, sourced from a Eurofighter Typhoon. Scott's name is on the tail fin of the car after he achieved the highest speed on the car's simulator out of thousands of visitors to The Autosport International Show in 2013 when he was aged just 11, using cushions to reach the pedals. He reached a top speed of mph (Mach 1.35) and measured mile speed of mph (Mach 1.33). Scott is is competing the birelart UK Series, British Championship, in the Junior 100cc kart class. During his visit to Newquay, he met Richard Noble OBE the Project s Director and holder of the Land Speed Record and the current holder Wing Commander Andy Green OBE After the tests on Newquay s 1.7-mile runway have been completed, the Bloodhound team plans to ship the vehicle to a specially prepared track for the first of two high-speed campaigns in COMMONWEALTH WAR GRAVES COMMISSION (CWGC) Anglia Tours, with whom we work to enable our Year 9 students to visit Ypres, are aware that many students and staff will have relatives buried in CWGC cemeteries or named on memorials to the missing. To assist them with arranging to conduct pilgrimages for those students and staff, they have sent a form to be completed for each casualty. The form is available on ispace and needs to be completed and returned to me (cgo@sandon.essex.sch.uk) by Monday, 13 November Year 9 will be making the annual visit to Ypres next Friday, 17 November. Mrs Gower YEAR 11 REVISION TIMETABLE UPDATE Now that we have had the Year 11 examination timetable the revision schedule shared to Year 11 in September will be altered in order to best support your child.
