We are on our way to a wonderful New Year and, hopefully, one that will bring us all joy and happiness. Best Wishes to Everyone! more sedate settled on Mexican Train (dominoes). The Tree Trimming Party and Christmas Brunch provided an opportunity for us to gather and reminisce as we placed the ornaments on the tree. Members had many games to choose from including card games and board games. Some chose to retire to the library for a game of poker while others engaged in a raucous game of Monopoly. The New Year s Eve and our Annual Soup Day Parties were big hits as well and very festive as you can see by some of those ringing in the New Year!

Two tables were required to hold the more than 15 kinds of soup brought by members for Soup Day! There were also snacks, breads, and desserts to add to the feast! clubhouse at 7pm.

All the ladies are invited, just bring an appetizer or dessert to share and join the fun! The game starts at 7:30. The December Bunco night is always a special one. Hope to see you there! Super Bowl Sunday was a lot of fun too. A member loaned an additional television which made it possible for everyone to watch the game and root for their team. The Social Committee made submarine sandwiches and members provided game snacks. Ladies not interested in the game gathered in the library for a game of Jokers and Marbles. Fun for everyone! Ladies Bunco Joan Ross served as hostess in February. Winners were: Most Buncos Carolyn Hawkins and Kelly McGuire; Highest Score June Summers; Most Wins Sue Slawinski; Last Bunco Priscilla Evans; Most Losses RoseAnn Bradner. Congratulations, ladies! Remember, Bunco takes place on the first Monday of the month at the Yoga Class Yoga classes, our ladies fitness sessions continue indoors at the clubhouse. The instructor is Sandra Krasnow. The class is called Simply Stronger and is described as a fitness program geared to women 55 and older with the focus on balance and strengthening. It is held Friday mornings at 9am and the fee is $7. It is such a great way to start your day! This class is open to everyone so plan on joining in! OYSTER HARBOUR LADY GOLFERS There is a newly formed group of Oyster Harbour Lady golfers. Most of these ladies are new golfers and they play on the 4 th Friday of every month at a Par 3 course. Some gals want to play more, and that round is scheduled for the 2 nd Friday of every month. In addition, there are a few golfers who play once a week at a regular, 18 hole course and you can play too. All ladies are welcome to come and join the fun. 3 Attention Fishermen! A new community fishing club has been formed. The group gets together twice a month to talk about the fish that get away. Just kidding! If you enjoy fishing or want to learn more about fishing in this area, this is the group for you. They meet to discuss gear, tackle, bait, fishing spots and just about everything connected to fishing. They are all about sport and fun. New members are welcome and everyone is invited to join. Meetings are the first and third Thursday of each month at 7:00 pm at the clubhouse. Contact Jess Jesmer at jesmernc@aol.com for more information or to join. Security Tip of the Month remote as you exit the vehicle and press the lock feature on your key remote device. The device works as follows: Thieves park near a parking lot and watch as you enter to park your vehicle. When you exit your vehicle and use your key remote to lock your vehicle, they activate the device and captivate the signal. We all know from experience that we hold up our remote key in hand until we hear the horn sound on our vehicle to assure that the vehicle is locked. The thieves wait and while you are shopping, they walk up to your vehicle and activate the identifier, and your driver's door unlocks with no alarm. Your vehicle is thinking that you are now entering back inside the car and have deactivated the lock/alarm system. The way to defeat this device is to lock your doors manually because then no code is given out. Never use your remote to lock your vehicle! Dan Bace, Security Committee Chairman, offers this advice: $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Beware of a new device called the "Identifier." Be aware when you go shopping and leave your car in the parking lot. Thieves/culprits have a new gadget called by many names; however, most call it the identifier. 4 Volunteers worked almost a whole day to ready the clubhouse and front entrance for the holiday season. Those participating were: Debbie Bace, Ginny Hall, Marjorie Volk, Joan Smith, Gladys Simasek, June Summers, Sandra Witcher, Peg Rioux, Donna Evans, Ed Ross, Dick Rioux, Stan Slawinski, Stan Wisniewski, Don Evans, John Champlin, Dan Evans, and Kelly McGuire. After the holidays, Ginny Hall, John Champlin, Dan Bace, Marjorie Volk, Peg Rioux, Dick Rioux, Ed Ross, Gladys Simasek, Rick Hiatt, Tony Hiatt, and Mondie Gallagher removed and stored the indoor decorations. The outdoor decorations were left to enjoy until the landscapers needed to prune the Crepe Myrtles and then Dick Rioux, John Champlin, Peggi Pajai, Stan and Carla Wisniewski, Jim McGowan, Don Evans, and Dan Evans removed the outdoor lights and decorations. Structures and Grounds volunteers worked to remove the huge stump at the entrance to the community. After exposing the stump and roots, Carolina Tree worked to grind it out and the volunteers finished the project, filling in the hole and mulching over it. At the request of the Social Committee, Dan Bace constructed this Suggestion Box. You can find it in the clubhouse. Suggestions/comments are welcome but please remember to be respectful! John Champlin, Joe Volk, and Les Weintraub installed the new basketball backboard. George Fay was the photographer. Ready for some hoops? Thanks to Marjorie Volk for organizing the CPR Class that was held in January! The class was conducted by Kathleen Schulz, certified EMT and CPR instructor led the class which included use of the defibrillator Stan Wisniewski, Dick Rioux, and Dan Bace installed the new A/C Heating unit in the guardhouse. Lee and Dottie are very appreciative! Unfortunately, we lost another large oak tree during a windy storm in December. This one was located near the clubhouse and fell across the wrought iron portion of the front entrance wall, causing some minor damage. Fortunately, Carolina Tree Company was able respond quickly and completed the job by 3pm the same day. This was not a job for volunteers!

Chef s Corner - Another great recipe from RoseAnn Bradner Spinach and Artichoke Pasta (serves a crowd) Just had to write about a dish I made last week that was so good we had a three-peat. We had a little spur of the moment dinner party and I made this dish. I had just about everything in the pantry or fridge so it was quite easy to assemble. Thought I would pass it along to The Pearl. You will need: A package of penne or other macaroni (about 12 oz) A half stick or more of butter or a combo of butter and olive oil. A bag or 2 of Baby Spinach A can or jar (or 2) of artichoke hearts, drained and sliced into halves. About 3T of flour 2-3 cups of whole milk Some salt, pepper, and a pinch or 2 of cayenne pepper Cheeses: a cup of grated Monterrey Jack or Mozzarella or whatever you have on hand, a few ounces of cream cheese, ½ cup of Parmesan, grated About ½ cup of chicken broth ½ cup of seasoned breadcrumbs, use panko if you have some Some crushed red pepper flakes to taste. I start by heating up the water and cooking the pasta. Take it out of the pan and set aside. Put more butter in the pan and raise the heat to high. Throw in the artichokes and stir until they get a little color. Take them out of the pan and set aside. Reduce the heat to low and add 2 tablespoons of the butter to the pot. When it melts sprinkle in the flour and whisk it until it s combined. Pour in the milk and whisk to combine. Let it cook for 3-4 minutes and it starts to get thick. Now add the cheeses some salt and pepper and a pinch or more of cayenne. Stir to melt and if it gets really thick, splash in some chicken broth. Add the artichokes and pasta and toss to combine. Gently fold in the spinach and then pour the pasta into a serving bowl. Sprinkle the top with crushed red pepper flakes and plenty of Panko breadcrumbs for crunch. Serve with a salad, some sliced sausage or some cooked shrimp In Memory Brenda Fay January 15, 2013 Melt some of the butter and add the minced garlic.
