2 P A G E 2 Nurse s Corner Winter Safety Winter months can be challenging with cold temperatures. Keeping children warm, safe, and healthy is important. These important tips offer parents advice for the winter season. WHAT TO WEAR WINTER HEALTH Dress children warmly for outdoor activities. Several thin layers will keep them dry and warm. Clothing for children should consist of turtlenecks, one or two shirts, pants, sweater, coat, warm socks, boots, gloves and a hat. If your child suffers from winter nosebleeds, try using a cold air humidifier in the child s room at night. Saline nose drops may help tissues moist. If bleeding is severe or recurrent, consult your pediatrician. The rule of thumb for older babies and young children is to dress them in one more layer of clothing than an adult would wear in the same condition. HYPOTHERMIA Cold weather does not cause colds and flu. But the viruses that cause colds and flu tend to be more common in the winter when children are in school and are in close contact with each other. Frequent hand washing and teaching your child to sneeze or cough into the bend of her/his elbow may help reduce the spread of colds and flu. Hypothermia develops when a child s temperature falls below normal due to exposure to cold. It happens when a youngster is playing outdoors in extremely cold weather without wearing proper clothing. Children between the ages of 6 and 59 months (5 yrs. Old) should get the inlfluenza vaccine to reduce their risk of catching a flu. You may inquire this to your nearest primary health center.

4 P A G E 4 Dear Parents, The Counselor s Corner Stress is something that can affect us all. It is a result of the demands placed on us every day and our ability to meet them. Parents may think of stress as something that only impacts adults. However, stress is something that impacts kids, too. Kids can feel overwhelmed with academic or social pressures (especially the pressure to fit in). Kids are also very in tune with things around them. They can be affected by stress that their parents may feel, events that occur within their families, and even events throughout the world. Here are some ideas for how to help your child cope with stress: Help your child get a good night s sleep. Establish routines for your child. Make time to play with your child each day. Just being near you can help your child to feel safe and relaxed, and will reduce stress. It was with your outpouring support and generosity that we were able to achieve our projected goal and more, raising 55,778 QAR.
