4 August 01, 2012 AUSTRIA Austria Wineries A - H Long forgotten is the anti-freeze scandal and Austria is very much back on track making some lovely wines especially whites from Riesling and Grüner Veltliner. Both of these grapes make wines that are delicious as apéritifs and marry well with fish dishes but if you enjoy white with meat try, especially the Grüner, with chicken and pork. The reds from Blaufränkish lean more to Burgundy than Bordeaux in style and have that enticing mix of black fruited bilberry and fresher red raspberry. The fruit has depth and the ripeness shows well on the finish Grüner Veltliner Kies Tasted at Lincoln s Inn April 2010 The richness of white peach backed by tropical fruit gives flesh on the nose but behind is acidity refreshing the start of the palate. The powerful flavours return enriching the back palate. Grüner Veltliner Kies The mix of white peach and greengage is rich fleshing out the nose. There is mid lime acidity that refreshes lifts the flavours and lengthens the finish. Grüner Veltliner Kies Tasted in the Carlton Club May 2012 There is lime freshness on the nose with at the back a herbal hint. The palate starts fresh with some sweeter fruit coming through in the middle the apple and grapefruit balancing the sweetness on the finish. Master of Wine: Derek Smedley 4

5 AUSTRIA August 01, 2012 Grüner Veltliner Kies Tasted at Lincoln s Inn April 2013 The nose has a fleshy richness with an attractive mix of tropical fruits. The sweetness on the mid palate is underpinned by freshness some crisp apple but the sweeter flavours give a richer feel to the finish. Grüner Veltliner Kiesling Keis Fresh on the nose and lime driven on the palate there are a lot of attractive flavours. Sweet fruit gives a richer feel in the middle yet the finish is fresh light and fragrant. Grüner Veltliner Loam With less minerality and acidity to balance the richness, the nose feels fleshy and the palate supple and round. Greengage is very much in evidence but so is pear and it is the latter that gives the feeling of weight. Grüner Veltliner Loam February 2010 The richness of the fruit is well balanced by flinty acidity. Ripe tropical fruits backed by peach are refreshed by greengage with a touch of apple. The flavours last well on the back palate. Grüner Veltliner Loam The nose is packed with ripe fruit and this weight of flavour is there enriching the palate. The sweetness is balanced by freshness helping to bring out the fragrances. More tropical fruit shows on the back palate a lovely mix of flavours. Grüner Veltliner Loam Tasted at Lincoln s Inn May 2012 Mineral and citrus gives freshness on the nose and the start of the palate. The mid palate is slightly richer with a hint of greengage a touch herbal the freshness coming through towards the back giving a racy finish. Grüner Veltliner Eichenstaude There is power on the nose and lots of rich fruit on the palate. Mid acidity ensures brightness but then the alcohol shows and tends to overpower the lovely fruit fragrance leaving the finish feeling heavy and rather clumsy. 6 August 01, 2012 AUSTRIA The richness of sweet fruit fleshes out the nose and gives weight of flavour on the start of the palate. Under the richness there is freshness mineral and citric that lifts the fruit and gives brightness on the finish. Grüner Veltliner Kiesling Eichenstaude Both nose and palate have rich ripe fruit sweet greengage. The sweet flavours are underpinned by freshness limes and apples highlighting the flavours and giving a lighter feel at the back and a crisper feel on the finish. Grüner Veltliner Speis February 2010 Honeyed fruit enriches the nose and gives a lovely depth of flavour on the palate. The apple freshness lifts the fruit on the mid palate and the mineral towards the back adds some spice. Grüner Veltliner Speis The nose has a mineral crispness with behind it richer more honeyed fruit. The palate starts apple fresh but the sweetness of the fruit enriches the mid palate with towards the back citrus winning through and refreshing the finish. Grüner Veltliner Speis The fruit on the nose is rich lots of greengage and the palate starts with sweetness and depth but at the back it feels fresher lighter with more citrus in evidence. Grüner Veltliner Spies Tasted at the Carlton Club January 2015 The fruit on the nose is rich the start of the palate sweet with white peach and apricot. The mid palate has a citrus mix lighter and fresher but it finishes with depth and hints of sweetness. Riesling Donatus Tasted at Lincoln s Inn April 2010 The fruit on the nose is very rich lots of greengage. The ripeness of the fruit fleshes out the start of the palate with crisp apple appearing and this combined with herbal spice refreshes the finish. Riesling Donatus Although it appears lime fresh on the nose there are some richer fuller flavours behind. There is a lot happening on the palate rich greengage underpinned by a mineral slate backbone that brings out the fruit fragrances. Master of Wine: Derek Smedley 6

7 AUSTRIA August 01, 2012 Riesling Ametzberg The nose has a complex mix of flavours and the palate layers of sweetness and freshness. The back plate has depth of fruit richness and sweetness but the fresh fruit the lime and lemon come through on the finish refreshing. Pinot Blanc It is very light on nose and this is reflected on the palate rather a non-entity. It is the alcohol that spoils and over dominates what fruit fragrances tend to show. Chardonnay Over fat, the ripe melon and greengage are not backed by enough acidity. The fatness gives blandness to the wine and the high alcohol dominates the finish overriding the melon character of the fruit. Grüner Veltliner Unfil Lots of fruit on the nose, the greengage fleshiness is refreshed by lime and apple. Sweet and full on the palate and although the alcohol adds weight there is enough acidity to refresh and ensure that lovely fruits are not hidden. Red Wines Zweigelt The red fruit mix give brightness on the nose and freshness on the palate. Raspberry vies with red cherry for dominance and although the cherry weight is there in the middle it is the raspberry that shows strongly on the finish. Zweigelt Barrique The fruit feels sweet lots of ripe flavours with the black fruits tending to dominate. Rich plum some black cherry is underpinned by fresher flavours bramble some bilberry and this gives a slightly lighter finish with just a hint of oak. Syrah The nose has lots of attractive fragrances all leaning towards red fruits in character. There is a bit more weight on the mid palate but the back palate is fresh spicy and peppery. 8 August 01, 2012 AUSTRIA The mix of fruits on the nose is rich lots of powerful flavours. Black cherry seems to dominate with the fleshiness of plum enriching the middle. There are layers of flavour black and red fruits giving lots of complexity on the back palate. Zweigelt Granit The nose has depth brooding black fruits and the palate is sweet fruited rich lovely and supple. There are red fruits in the background the layers of freshness giving complexity and the finish is full rich fruited with a lovely mix of flavours. Weingut Bernhard Ott Wagram Grüner Veltliner der Ott Tasted at the Carlton Club January 2015 Citrus on the nose the start of the palate light with lime and lemon richer in the middle a touch of peach and grapefruit even a hint of tangerine layers of interest. The back palate has citrus freshness the finish a hint of white pepper. It certainly suits white fish, makes a great partner to scallops and has enough character not to be overpowered by lobster and crab well worth the experiment. Grüner Veltliner Am Berg Tasted at the Royal College of Physicians July 2015 Lime fresh on the nose the start of the palate is light vibrant with a mix of citrus fruits. Slightly richer in the middle hints of tropical fruits but at the back the citrus dominates the finish long and lean. Weingut Brundlmayer Kamptal Grüner Veltliner Käferberg September 2008 The nose is broad and rich, lots of apricot and peach but underpinning is the freshness of lime. The pattern is repeated on the palate rich and powerful fruit brightened by acidity. Some alcohol does show through adding to the fatness but both this and the fruit power are balanced by freshness ensuring a more stylish end. Master of Wine: Derek Smedley 8

9 AUSTRIA August 01, 2012 Grüner Veltliner Kamptaler Terassen It is very attractive, an open fresh nose, not complex but showing fragrance of fruit. Sweetness is there on the palate nicely refreshed by lime and apple. Grüner Veltliner Kamptaler Terassen February 2010 There is a lot of fruit on the nose and richness of flavour on the palate. Greengage is refreshed by apple with tropical fruits adding an attractive complexity Grüner Veltliner Alte Reben February 2010 It has the richness of peach with lovely tropical fruit showing through. Touch of maturity on the mid palate with a fresher more greengage character towards the back Grüner Veltliner Loiser Berg Tasted at the Carlton Club January 2015 Peach and apricot gives depth on the nose and a rich start to the palate. The sweet ripe tropical fruits on the mid palate are backed by tangerine and orange fresher at the back yet with depth richness on the finish Riesling Zöbinger Heiligenstein Alte Reben September 2008 The fresh fruits are backed by floral fragrances, leafy greengage and apple. Sweetness comes through on the palate well balanced by the mid acidity and the mineral flint. Towards the back tropical fruits are very much in evidence the flavours enhanced by hints of greengage. The finish is action packed with flavour. Riesling Kamptaler Terassen It has all the perfume and mineral fragrance one expects from Riesling; sweetness of fruit so well balanced by crispness. The underlying character is lime but there are enticing hints of grapefruit coming through Riesling Steinmassel The main flavour is greengage but it is interwoven with hints of lime and grapefruit, all adding to the complexity. The fruit feels ripe, nicely refreshed by mineral acidity with a complexity coming from the flinty spice that shows towards the back of the palate. 10 August 01, 2012 AUSTRIA The nose has the richness of honeyed melon backed by fresh grapefruit and lime. Real depth of flavour on the palate, the fruit is ripe, lifted by mid freshness and there is a wonderful spice perfume Langenloiser Berg-Vogelsang There is a floral element to the citrus fruit on the nose. Lovely vibrant flavours, the freshness overlays sweeter, richer fruit and the mix of fruits have an exciting complexity. Floral perfumed greengage and grapefruit linger on the palate. Rosé Wines Rosé vom Zweigelt It is all very wild strawberry and raspberry, quite light on nose but expressively fragrant. Ripe fruit gives a sweet feel but the freshness takes over and gives the fruit at the back a zip. Weingut Dolle Kamptal Grüner Veltliner Tasted at Lincoln s Inn April 2013 There is a lot of fat fleshy fruit on both nose and palate the lack of mid freshness giving a flabby feel. Towards the back the hints of citrus don t really balance the sweetness leaving the finish nondescript and lacking balance. Grüner Veltliner Gaisberg Tasted at Lincoln s Inn May 2012 The fruit is sweet and ripe filling out the nose and giving flesh on the palate. There is apple freshness underpinning balancing and giving a brighter feel towards the back. The freshness brings out the slightly herbal nature of the fruit. Tasted at Lincoln s Inn October The nose has depth of fruit but behind is freshness lemon acidity. The palate like the nose has a mix of richness and freshness tropical fruits underpinned by lemon. Grüner Veltliner Gaisberg Erst Lage Tasted at the Royal College of Physicians July 2015 Bright and citrusy the nose is fresh the start of the palate light and fragrant. Sweet fruit gives more depth in the middle mid richness but at the back fresh fruit balances the finish long with lingering flavours. Master of Wine: Derek Smedley 10

11 AUSTRIA August 01, 2012 Eschenhof Holzer Wagram Altweingarten Grüner Veltliner Tasted at the LWF Kensington Olympia May 2015 Fragrant floral white flowers the start of the palate is fresh but there is peach and tropical fruit richness in the middle. Bright fresh at the back it finishes with a mix of lime and lemon. Wagram Grüner Veltliner Tasted at the LWF Kensington Olympia May 2015 Fresh fruits on the nose there is more depth on the palate with greengage richness in the middle. Lighter at the back a mix of citrus fruits it fills out on the finish with a nice depth of flavour. Haide Roter Veltliner Tasted at the LWF Kensington Olympia May 2015 The fruit is ripe the nose rich and deep with the apricot yellow peach mix giving flesh on the start of the palate. Under the rich fruit there is enough freshness to balance and bring out a nutmeg spiciness on the finish. Haide Roter Veltliner Tasted at the LWF Kensington Olympia May 2015 Ripe peach a hint of apricot the nose has depth of fruit and the palate richness. Under the fleshy peach there is freshness but the finish is sweet with a mix of rich flavours. Red Wines Wagram Zweigelt Tasted at the LWF Kensington Olympia May 2015 Ripe strawberry the nose has the richness of ripe fruit and the start of the palate has fleshy suppleness. The tannins are ripe the mid palate generous with ripe red fruit giving richness on the finish. Goldberg Zweigelt Tasted at the LWF Kensington Olympia May 2015 The nose has a mix of black fruits a racy spiciness and the palate has depth richness ripe black cherry backed by slightly fresher blackcurrant. 12 August 01, 2012 AUSTRIA Birgit Eichinger Kamptal Grüner Veltliner Hasel February 2010 There is breadth of fruit on the nose all rather heavy. The palate has richness but lacks the underlying citrus to freshen leaving the finish a touch flabby and short. Grüner Veltliner Klassik Wechselberg The nose is rich the fruit sweet and the palate has a peachy depth. Lime and lemon balance the richness and give freshness at the back. The finish is fresh fruited fragrant and long. Riesling Heiligenstein February 2010 There is a racy crispness about the nose lots of citrus flavours. Sweeter greengage gives some weight on the palate and it is given complexity by the herbal mix at the back. Riesling Reserve Gaisberg IOTW The fresh fruited nose has herbal grassy undertones and the palate has the same mix of flavours. There are some appealing fragrances but it is very light slightly lacking in character. Weingut Feiler-Artinger Neusiedlersee Ruster Ausbruch Essenz Pinot Gris 66% Chardonnay 34% September 2008 The fruit is sweet and powerful yet there is enough herbal freshness to ensure real complexity. Orange peel and peach are underpinned by greengage and a touch of lime. The palate is sumptuous, voluptuous in its richness, apricot and peach intermingling with candied citrus peel backed by hazelnut. The balance ensures real elegance. 13 AUSTRIA August 01, 2012 Spring blossoms orange blossoms give a fragrant charm on the nose. The mix of tropical fruits on the palate is sweet and ripe with just a hint of pourriture. Citrus towards the back refreshes and lifts the flavours balancing the sweetness on the finish. Weingut Felsner Kremstal Grüner Veltliner Gerlissen Niederösterreich Tasted at Lincoln s Inn April 2010 Light and fragrant on the nose it is lacking in real character. The palate is fresh hints of citrus just tending to lack some personality There is some sweet fruit on the nose with a white peach character coming through on the palate. Towards the back it is lighter with underlying lemon and lime. Grüner Veltliner Gebling Niederösterreich The fruit on the nose is very citrus in character giving it crispness. It feels richer on the palate more apple with a hint of greengage but the freshness is there underpinning crisping up the finish. Grüner Veltliner Moosburgerin Niederösterreich February 2010 It is light but has an attractive fragrance. There is an attractive floral character on the palate with some fuller tropical fruits coming through towards the back Although it is quite light there are lovely fragrances hints of white peach and apple. The back palate has crisp fruit and this freshness brings out the fragrances. Grüner Veltliner Moosburgerin Kremstal Light and fresh fruited the nose has a mix of apple and citrus. There is a sweeter feel in the middle pear and tropical fruits but the finish is very light but fragrant and fresh fruited. 14 August 01, 2012 AUSTRIA It is light fresh with herbal green lime on the nose. Slightly sweeter flavours come through on the palate their richness balanced by freshness that lifts the fruit on the back palate and brings out the fragrances on the finish. Riesling Gebling Kremstal Floral and fragrant the nose is fresh but the palate richer sweet fruited with lots of greengage on the mid palate. There is a balancing freshness underlying lime and lemon that gives a lighter racier feel to the finish. Grüner Veltliner Alte Reben Tasted at Lincoln s Inn May 2012 The nose is full of rich fruit and the palate is rich ripe and fleshy. Behind the peachy apricot richness there is a balancing citric freshness that lifts the flavours and gives a lighter feel on the finish. Grüner Veltliner Alte Reben Rohrendorfer Leithen Kremstal There are lots of rich flavours on the nose and these are mirrored on the palate. White peach intermingles with apple all underpinned by lime and lemon that refreshes. Fritsch Wagram Grüner Veltliner Wagram February 2010 There is not a lot of charm about the nose and an over fat earthiness shows through on the palate. Fresher fruits are there underneath but tend to be over dominated by the coarseness. Schloss Gobelsberg Kamptal Grüner Veltliner 1OTW The mix of tropical fruits is rich backed by greengage. Balancing the fleshy sweetness apple and a touch of citrus refresh and although lighter at the back the finish has depth of flavour. Master of Wine: Derek Smedley 14

15 AUSTRIA August 01, 2012 Grüner Veltliner Kammerner Renner 1ot Tasted at Lincoln s Inn April 2010 The crispness on the nose gives a racy feel. Lime and grapefruit are enriched by tropical fruits giving more complexity and depth of flavour. There is depth of flavour on the back palate. Grüner Veltliner Kammener Renner Tasted at Lincoln s Inn April 2012 The nose has a lovely mix of flavours quite sweet tropical fruits backed by fresher lime and apple. The mid palate is sweet at the start with citric freshness towards the back a bitter sweet mix with a herbal racy quality on the finish. Tasted at Lincoln s Inn October The fruit on the nose is rich with greengage rather more dominant than the tropical fruits. The mid sweetness is underpinned by apple freshness and the greengage depth of flavour fills out the back palate and finish. Grüner Veltliner Lamm September 2008 The mix of flavours on the nose is both rich and complex, fuller apricot underpinned by fresh lemon and lime. On the palate the crispness is very apparent, fruit acidity enhanced by flint and mineral but beneath the crispness the fruits are ripe, rich and sweet giving a fleshy depth to the finish. Grüner Veltliner Lamm Reserve Tasted at Lincoln s Inn April 2010 The nose is full of rich fruit very peach and apricot in flavour. The palate is full of flavour, the ripe feel to the fruit fleshing it out but the power is nicely balanced by apple freshness. Grüner Veltliner Loessterrassen Tasted at the Royal College of Physicians July 2015 The nose has depth the fruit on the palate is sweet apricot and peach. Under the sweetness the rich fruit there is freshness a citrus mix and whilst the back palate has depth peaches and tropical fruits the finish has a racy lime and lemon freshness. Grüner Veltliner Loessterrassen Tasted at Lincoln s Inn May 2012 There is a nice mix of fruits on the nose with sweet tropical fruits on the palate. 16 August 01, 2012 AUSTRIA Racy fresh fruited the nose has a mix of crisp apple and lime fragrant and floral. The palate starts fresh the mid palate sweeter but the back palate and finish have a strong citrus character with flavours that linger. Sauvignon Blanc Zieregg September 2008 The nose is very firm with lots of mineral and flint overlaying and slightly dominating the fruit. The sweetness of tropical fruit is there lending some weight to the palate and this richness is even more apparent towards the back, lush pear and a touch of peach. The blend of fruit and mineral ensures lots of complexity. Schlossweingut Graf Hardegg Weinviertel Veltlinsky Light and refreshing, the crisp apple flavours are overlaid with an elderflower fragrance; the fruit is ripe but the crisp acidity refreshes and brightens. Grüner Veltliner vom Schloss The mix of greengage and apple has an attractive flowery character that brightens both nose and palate. The fruit is ripe but given a lift by the mid freshness so enhancing the fragrance. Riesling vom Schloss The minerals mixed in with the fruit give complexity and an acidity that blends well with the fruit sweetness. Very flowery, the fruit feels flinty and a touch of perfumed spice adds to the excitement. Viognier The main flavour is white peach, very flowery and perfumed. The fruit has weight and depth, a complexity that adds interest. Perfumed and flowery the flavours last well. Riesling Spätlese Reserve vom Schloss It has richness, complexity, depth of fruit backed by a lovely enticing freshness. Tropical fruits blend in with greengage giving a full feel to the palate but then a racy minerality takes over ensuring freshness at the end Master of Wine: Derek Smedley 16

17 AUSTRIA August 01, 2012 Weingut Gernot und Heike Heinrich Neusiedlersee Red Wines Zweigelt Packed with freshness, the mix of raspberry and wild strawberry has an appealing fragrance. The palate feels supple; the sweetness of the fruit fleshing out the middle with towards the back some acidity thus ensuring a lovely fresh end. Zweigelt Bitter cherries and bilberries the nose is fresh and the start of the palate light and fragrant. The mid palate has sweeter flavours richer fruit and although there is depth on the back palate the finish has blackberry freshness. Blaufränkisch Blackberry is very much in evidence on the nose; the ripeness of the fruit gives richness and depth. The fleshiness of the ripe fruit has a supple feel and then there is freshness, adding brightness, so lengthening the mix of black cherry and bramble. Blaufränkisch Leithaberg Fleshy and rich fruited the nose has depth of flavour and the palate layers of bramble and black cherry. Although lighter in the middle the freshness gives way to sweet ripe fruit that fleshes out the back palate. Blaufränkisch Burgenland The nose has lots of black fruits and the palate a mix of blackberry and firmer black cherry. The mid palate is sweet with rich fruit and ripe tannins mid suppleness and although lighter and brighter at the back the finish has richness and depth. St Laurent A powerful mix of flavours packs the nose, bramble, sloe and bilberry. Underneath this intriguing mix of black fruits are hints of mulberry and raspberry adding to the complexity. 18 August 01, 2012 AUSTRIA St Laurent The nose has a rich mix of fruits mainly black fruits bramble and black cherry the ripeness giving a fleshy richness at the start. It feels fresher at the back red fruits intermingling with the black and the finish has nice length. Gabarinza The mix of local grape types with some international ones ensures an exciting complexity on both nose and palate. Black fruits appear to dominate but underneath are fleshy strawberries giving suppleness and sweetness. Weingut Hiedler Kamptal Grüner Veltliner Spiegel Tasted at the Carlton Club January 2015 Lean and fresh fruited on the nose the palate is light racy fresh with mineral and flint. There is a hint of sweetness in the middle ripe pear but both back palate and finish are light lean and steely. Weingut Franz Hirtzberger Wachau Grüner Veltliner Honivogl-Smaragd September 2008 The nose has a lovely weight of rich, ripe fruit, fleshy peach and apricot backed by tropical fruits all refreshed by apples and limes. The freshness on the palate enhances the fruit and it is well balanced by the mid palate sweetness. There is a lot happening, real complexity, concentrated power that lingers long. Grüner Veltliner Honivogl-Smaragd The mix of peach and apricot gives richness on the nose and weight of flavour on the palate. There is freshness enhancing the fruit and balancing the richer flavours. The layers of fruit give complexity their sweetness enriching the finish. Master of Wine: Derek Smedley 18

19 AUSTRIA August 01, 2012 Grüner Veltliner Rotes Tor-Federspiel February 2010 It is very crisp on the nose and the acidity on the palate tends to hide some of the fruit. More tropical fruit and grapefruit show towards the back but it lacks real depth. Grüner Veltliner Rotes Tor-Federspiel Citrus flavours refresh the nose and give freshness on the start of the palate. There is sweeter fruit on the mid palate but the finish is light fresh just lacking a bit of substance. Grüner Veltliner Axpoint-Smaragd There a greater weight of fruit on the nose and this richness gives a more sumptuous feel on the mid palate. The mix of peach and apricot is underpinned by balancing citrus Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Kirchweg The fruit is ripe the nose full and the palate has a fleshy fatness. The mid palate has an earthiness herbal slightly grassy with at the back ripe apricot underpinned by citrus. Riesling Hochrain-Smaragd Fresh lime gives crispness on the nose and a fresh start to the palate. Behind the citric freshness is some fleshy apricot all quite rich and lush. The sweetness of the fruit enriches the back palate. Riesling Singerriedel-Smaragd September 2008 The green leafy herbal spice is very powerful with the sweetness of the fruit enriching both nose and palate. The layers of flavour give complexity, the fruit backed by flint and mineral. Floral leafy freshness shows through towards the back giving a showy elegant feel to the finish. Riesling Steinterrassen-Federspiel It is sweet and lush with lots of ripe pears and topical fruits. There is some underlying freshness but the ripe fruit fleshes out the finish slightly hiding some of the more delicate fruit flavours.
