Learning builds day by day. A child who misses a day of school, misses a day of learning. Research shows that children who are in school most of the time do better on state tests. Studies also show that kids who are absent more often score lower on state tests. Being late for school hurts a child s learning, too. A student who is 10 minutes late every day will miss 30 hours of instruction during the year. Gas Cards for Attendance: Any Student who has perfect attendance for the quarter will be put into a drawing for a prize including a $50 gas card for their family

2 Medical Concerns? Don t forget, if you child has any medical concerns that may interfere with school, please update the office. Influenza season will soon be here! The influenza vaccine helps protect children from the flu and its complications and decreases the spread of influenza in the community. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that all children (over the age of 6 months) and adults receive a flu vaccine each year. There will be a flu shot clinic (POD) held on October 24 from 2-6 pm at Central High School. This is for CHILDREN ONLY, age 6 months 18 years. NO adults can be vaccinated. It will be FREE of charge. Child must have a consent form signed by a parent/guardian. The consent form for the flu shot clinic at Central High School can be found on the Aberdeen School District web page or in the office. Other options for getting your family immunized include checking with your family physician, Horizon Health Care ( ) or various pharmacies in town. 3 Enter the Reflections Art Contest & be recognized! The Simmons Elementary PTA believes kids deserve to be involved in the arts! All Simmons students are encouraged to participate in the Reflections Art Program! This year s theme is: Within Reach Original works of art may be entered in the following categories: Literature Visual Arts Photography Film Production Dance/Choreography How to enter: Create a work of art from one (or more) of the above categories by drawing a picture, taking a picture, composing a song, creating a dance or movie or writing a story. Submit your entry, along with the entry form to Mrs. Howard in the office by Monday, October 16th at 3:00pm. Students may submit more than one entry and may enter more than one category. Each entry needs a separate entry form. For the rules in each category, please visit All Simmons Elementary students that enter will receive a participation ribbon at a future school event! The school winners in each category will receive a trophy from the SE PTA and will compete in the City PTA competition. Entries will be judged by a community member with expertise in several different areas of art. If your child would like their name in the drawing for a bike, they can complete a book report for a book about one of our character traits. This month s character trait is responsibility. 5 Holiday Assistance Sign Up The Salvation Army is holding sign ups for the annual Holiday Assistance Program The Salvation Army will be providing opportunities for families in need to sign up for their annual Holiday Assistance program between the dates of October 16-20, October 23-27, and October 30-November 3. Mondays-Fridays the hours will be from 9-11 AM and 2 PM-4 PM. As in the past, the Salvation Army will be partnering with the Aberdeen Mall in the effort. The Salvation Army will be providing Christmas meal baskets and Angel Tree gifts for children 14 years of age and younger. Income requirements must be met to be eligible for the program. From additional information, persons may contact Aleece Jung, Social Services Director for the Salvation Army at Our character trait for the month of September is: Perseverance Each classroom teacher picked a student who always shows this trait.
