1 September 2016 Center News & Happenings Wednesday, August 24th. Wow! What a night. Nick Harbacz and a band of friends came together and gave us an evening filled with good food, friends, and great entertainment. Nick had a vision for an evening filled with Broadway themed music and entertainment and he delivered in full Broadway fashion. We were treated to songs from musicals like "The Sound of Music", "Cats", & "42nd Street". There were dancers performing to songs from "Mary Poppins" and "Hello Dolly". Friends from the Hilltown Senior Center brought stories and jokes to make us laugh and beautiful music played on harp and dulcimer to broaden our musical experience. So many people pitched in to help make the night a success that it was. With Nick at the helm, Lettie Saheim and Myrtle Stott planning and organizing like only they can, Connie Chickaway in the kitchen, Phyllis, Pamela, Poppy, Marge, Bev, Hal, Pat, Pam, Linda, Mary, Jeanne, Ray, Anita, Carmen and so many more lending their time and talent. It was a night to remember and it was th~ culmination of hard work and collaboration. Thank you Nick for bringing Broadway to Cohoes. Thank you everyone for your hard work that helped raise money to help the Senior Center continue to do the work supporting seniors in our community. 4 Sharing the bounty Summer harvest. It's well known that growing anything; whether it be flowers, vegetables, fruit trees, or green plants, empowers us to be more mindful of nature's gifts, to eat healthier, to get outside and enjoy physical activity, and to feel the joy of sun, air, soil, and water. Seniors especially, can find gardening nostalgic. Digging in the dirt, washing freshly harvested produce, smelling and tasting favorite vegetables fresh from the ground, can evoke powerful memories from childhood of people, places and life seasons that have come before. Gardening serves a practical purpose as well. Greater access to a variety of healthy food is a challenge for many seniors. Barriers such as expense, poor health, limited mobility, and lack of transportation make acquiring fruits and vegetables necessary for balanced and healthful living a challenge. Solutions are unfolding and all over the county, food distribution organizations are partnering with senior centers, senior housing complexes, and retirement villages to create improved opportunities for seniors to grow or purchase fresh produce. Raised bed gardens, built by community volunteers, on senior center grounds and neighborhood gardens built along popular bus routes offer seniors easier access to locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables. Farm to table delivery trucks transport produce to senior housing and other popular gathering places and offer affordability, freshness, and variety to greater numbers of seniors. The season of sharing is something the members of Cohoes Senior Center experience weekly. Boxes of freshly picked produce find their way to the Center courtesy of a special couple, who share their local garden's abundance by delivering its harvest to seniors who both enjoy, and depend upon their generosity. Like many volunteer, these gardeners wish to contribute their meaningful service without wide acclaim or recognition. I am guessing that they live in such a way that giving and sharing is the "norm" and we thank them! Gardens reap good for all of us. Whether we are on the growing end ) of things or we are simply the glad recipients of nature's bounty. Gardens build community, provide shared purpose, feed the soul, and reconnect us with the earth. Thanks to all you gardeners who give to us ' so freely in the summer season of abundance. ~~Judith McKinnon Senior Services of Albany
