1 80-45 WINCHESTER BLVD. BLDG. #4, CBU #29 QUEENS VILLAGE, N.Y (718) Services Now for Adult Persons, Inc. SNAP OF EASTERN QUEENS INNOVATIVE SENIOR CENTER NINA BHOLA, MA, CENTER DIRECTOR PAOLA MICELI, MPA, CEO/PRESIDENT MARIAN LEWEK, LMSW, CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER CHRIS PANELLINO, EXECUTIVE BOARD CHAIR NEWSLETTER DECEMBER 2016 Speaking From the Heart December begins with a flurry of activity, just as the warm recollections of Thanksgiving are still meandering around in our memories. Life is a multi-colored and textured tapestry woven together with members of an extended family. It holds the framework for our daily rituals and hopes for tomorrow in a substantial display of achievements, growth, loss and bereavement. The richness of our days are fortified through the relationships which have developed over our lifetime. One s sense of happiness and fulfillment can be derived in great part through the times spent with those people who mean the most to us because of a common past and the promise of a shared future. If you ask yourself, What do I truly need?, the answer may lie somewhere in the fabric of a tender yet strong connection forged among caring people with whom an emotional bond weaves the foundation for the creation of tomorrow s history. Life is with people So, hold tight to the love of family and cultivate your little corner of comfort. Create an environment nurtured with a sensitivity to the needs, interests, desires, hopes and dreams of those destined to visit with you; and celebrate the time spent among loved ones at all their different ages and stages. May we each arrive at the doorstep of every new day with an increased awareness of the fragility of life and a renewed commitment to remember and honor the bonds that give meaning and a sense of purpose to our time. Let us carve out those essential moments to speak with lovingkindness and care and never to hesitate to entwine your life with others. During the noise and confusion of the holiday season, open your heart to create your own music and story that commemorates the wisdom and spirit of your life. Holidays are rich in the celebration of history, customs and practices. As you share your unique traditions with family and friends, take a quiet moment to acknowledge the wonder of this life and embrace those people with whom you care the most about. In your hands you hold the gift of love. It flows through us with every heartbeat, if we allow ourselves the space to recognize and feel the warmth. It softens the storms of conflict and controversy if we make room for its gentle understanding and kindness. May your heart always be open to love and retain the capacity to create new memories. May this new year of 2017 bring you and your loved ones good health, peace and a sincere joy that will fill your hearts and souls with abundant appreciation, tenderness and love! With love & gratitude, Marian A NOT FOR PROFIT AGENCY FUNDED UNDER CONTRACT WITH THE NEW YORK CITY DEPARTMENT FOR THE AGING AS PART OF THE OLDER AMERICANS ACT PROGRAM, ADMINISTERED BY THE NEW YORK STATE OFFICE FOR THE AGING.

8 REFLECTIONS This is a time for reflection as well as celebration. As you look back on the past year and all that has taken place in your life, Remember each experience for the good that has come of it and for the knowledge you have gained. Remember the efforts you have made and the goals you have reached. Remember the love you have shared and the happiness you have brought. Remember the laughter, the joy, the hard work, and the tears. As you reflect on the past year, also be thinking of the new one to come. Because most importantly, this is a time of new beginnings and for the celebration of life. -Taylor Addison SAFETY TIPS FOR THIS HOLIDAY SEASON Always remain alert, know your surroundings and REMEMBER NOT TO: Leave windows open, or Leave blinds, curtains, etc. open permitting full view of your living room area from the street, if you are a first floor occupant Leave the entry door unlocked while you deposit packages inside, after shopping Leave packages (gifts) on the rear seat of a car unattended Leave a purse on any table in a store while looking for that size 13 slipper that just happens to be all the way in the back of the stack. 11 A Message from the Advisory Board On Monday 11/21, we held an open Advisory Board meeting. We asked a number of questions in regards to the monthly bulletin. The majority of members do read the bulletin and understand the articles. They do not just read the activities and luncheon menu. It was suggested that they sign up for all trips early so that they do not have to be cancelled at the last minute. Many members asked valid questions and received answers to all of them. One huge complaint was, no soup. Members of the menu committee mentioned that soup has been cancelled for the time being because there is not enough room on the stove to make it daily. Every now and then, soup may be served as a treat, but it is no longer on the menu. Tina questioned losing Medicare with the election of a new president. We told her to contact her assemblyman and check with AARP to follow up on political progress. One of our newer members (oneyear status) brought up a number of questions and applauded Nina and Marian for their good work. She suggested that the water coolers be checked and cleaned more often. Personal hygiene was discussed again as a reminder for all. It was suggested that members share their company with others in the center. Break the cliques so that new members can also enjoy their company and feel welcome. We wished everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and closed the meeting. I am personally thankful to the board for their dedication, to the members for their interest in new activities and care for others, and to Nina and the staff for their help and concern throughout the year. The kitchen is applauded for their hard work serving so many seniors and home bound. We appreciate Ervin and Ron for always keeping the building as clean as they possibly can, and finally, for my daughter Deborah's strength as she battles breast cancer with chemotherapy. DIRECTOR S MESSAGE Happy Holidays Everyone, Tis the season to be well you know the rest. And if you know anything about me, you know this is my favorite season. It s the time of year where we give and receive love and togetherness in ways we don t usually see during the rest of the year. Each year, millions of people look forward to the holiday season to reflect on everything we are grateful for. We count our blessings, we spend time with our families and friends, and we celebrate love. The holiday season is also a time to think of our neighbors, many of who are struggling to make ends meet. I ask that we keep them in mind as we prepare for the holidays and think about what we can do to give back. Here at SNAP we are hosting food, coat and toy drives for those in need. Please keep in mind, the smallest contribution can have an enormous impact in someone's life. May the season find you among those you love, and love you back. May you want for nothing and be filled with joy, the gift of kindness, support, love and thoughtfulness! Thoughtfully, Nina Bhola Thank you all Carole Vahey, President
