The host, Amy and Lamer Waymire, Frankie and Bill Worthington did a great job with all of the meals. In addition to the host, those in attendance were Jim Weilhammer & Katherine Kamiya, Martina Pelley, Jim & Pat Hentz, Linda & Bill Coleman, Jim & Bonnie Lewis, Jay & Elna Thompson, RoseMarie & Gary Anderson, Mary & Chip Adams with their cousin, Winston & Carol Montague, Mac McCauslin, John & Judy White, John, Gayle and Chris Duncan, Les & Margie Wells, Annette & Charlie Hurst and Walter Culley. Carol and Wally Welch joined the group Saturday evening for the soup and salad meal. In addition to these old timers, Tom and Robin Montgomery attended their first unit rally. They brought their friends Alan & Vicki Heffernan, who joined as new members before the weekend was over. To add icing on the cake, Membership Chairman, Jim Weilhammer caught vintage airstream owners, Steve and Kate Irving, at the gate and signed them up as new members Sunday morning. In addition to the thanks for the host for hosting such a great rally, I want to thank Chris Duncan for doing an outstanding job on our Sunday morning devotion. He makes his mother and dad proud of him. By now you should have received an invitation to our Christmas Dinner that will be December 6 (Thursday 5 PM CST) at the Madison Warehouse Restaurant in Marianna, Florida. Bring a wrapped toy for a child and we will open after dinner. Please call John or I at and tell us your choice of entre, chicken or prime rib. Historian Chris Duncan Web Master RoseMarie Anderson

4 Ask Bill & Frankie Worthington, Lamar Waymire and Charlie Hurst a little about outdoor cooking and you might get this kind of answer: Get up at 3:30am Milk the cows Gather the eggs Slaughter the hog Churn the butter Squeeze the chicken Invest your retirement in all new outdoor cooking products. All this was said through hoots of laughter and kidding, except perhaps the part about spending a bundle on outdoor cooking equipment. Years ago, while camping at the Florida caverns, Bill and Charlie had apples on hand from their trip to north Georgia. Both decided they would cook some cobblers in a Dutch oven that Bill had been experimenting with. When they offered their cobbler to friends, everyone enjoyed it.. their cast iron empire was born. Bill and Charlie use wood and a tri pod for soups, cobblers, pies and cornbread (Lamar calls it Charlie's bread). For the Topsail rally they used charcoal, which is what you see in the photos. Their first time cooking for the Big Bend club was in Pensacola about It s becoming an annual event the club looks forward to. The chefs can feed up to 45 people. For the November rally, they prepared Mountaineer Breakfast, Breakfast Casserole and Biscuits. Mountaineer breakfast includes bacon, onions, hash browns, eggs and cheese. Breakfast Casserole is slightly different with eggs, ground sausage, cheese, milk, and bread. Everything was mouthwatering good! Charlie says the crunch comes from a couple pine cones. When asked what the biggest challenge is to outdoor cooking, Charlie said weather. Frankie quipped: Mobs. When you start it draws a crowd Charlie says. People are curious about what is going on. Bill stated that when they started cooking back in 1988, it wasn t that unusual to cook over a fire, now it appears to be a novelty. According to Lamar Waymire, anything you can cook in the kitchen can be cooked outside. Lamar proceeded to list off a number of delicacies like road kill, armadillo, and beaver. Guaranteed fresh in his words. Bill added only the cook knows what it is supposed to be.

5 On the serious side, if one is interested in outdoor cooking, peruse garage sales for cast iron pots and other equipment, check newspapers and ask friends if they know of anyone who wants to part with their camping equipment. Books often come with the products which have advice on cooking with wood or charcoal. Amy Waymire has cast iron handed down from her mother. If properly taken care of, cast iron cookware can last for generations. To clean, use warm water and elbow grease! Never use any harsh material. Dry, lightly oil and heat. No soap. Once every 3 to 4 years they need to be cured, which requires superheating them in an oven. They WILL smoke. To store your pots, don t let the lids touch the top of the pot. The pot actually sits on top of the lid! If stored with the lid on the pot, it encourages moisture and can become rancid inside. Jim Hentz recently caught the outdoor cooking fever. He bought a pot on one of their trips to Myrtle Beach, stating he was unduly influenced by Charlie, Bill, Jay Thompson and Winston Montague. When asked about his cooking experiences, he stated, Easy, as long as Charlie, Bill and Lamar are around. Thanks to Bill Coleman and Gary Anderson for photos
