3 Welcome to the World of Premium Spirits The 2017 Premium Spirit Release features a global selection of whiskies as well as a few spirit gems such as an artisanal Italian gin and three amazing rums. This year s collection of premier spirits is an opportunity to explore the ever changing world of whisky and spirits. These unique products will appeal to both the enthusiast and the avid collector. We have some extremely old and rare Scotches this year, like the Bowmore Black 1964, Bunnahabhain 46 year old and the Glenfiddich 40 year old. There are limited and sought-after bourbons from Kentucky, as well as whiskies from Japan, Taiwan, Italy, France and India. We also have a great selection of well-crafted Canadian whiskies. A collection of remarkable single casks, that were exclusively chosen for BC Liquor Stores, adds excitement to the Spirit release. These single casks were chosen for their exceptional quality and offer consumers a chance to have a truly unique product that will never be seen again. The broadest selection of product will be featured at the 39th & Cambie and Park Royal Signature BC Liquor Stores. Most products will be available at all Signature BC Liquor Stores. 5 Islay Scotch 1. BOWMORE BLACK 1964 The liquid used to create Black Bowmore is so special, it s been slowly trickling out to market since Distilled in 1964, this release of Black Bowmore 50 Year Old Whisky is the final drops of a legendary dram. It was first bottled in 1993 and most recently in 2007, and now, for its final curtain call 159 bottles are available internationally. Each one is presented in a case made of Scottish oak, featuring silver inlays modelled on tree rings points Jim Murray s Whiskey Bible only 1 available $32,

6 2. BOWMORE 25 YEAR OLD ISLAY Crème brûlée topping, with chopped basil, mint and honey on the nose. The palate gives more of the same, but with additional herbs of thyme and cloves and a bigger hit of deep, musty peat. Red currants on the finish and a hint of peat smoke. Gold International Wine & Spirit Competition $ BOWMORE VAULT 1ST EDITION The finest ex-bourbon casks are used to create a refined liquid that reflects the distinctive microclimate in the depths of the No.1 Vaults at Bowmore distillery. The close proximity to the sea and the Atlantic sea spray that washes against the wall of Bowmore s legendary No.1 Vaults is a key note in this release. Notes of salted honeycomb complemented by the fresh and cool breeze of Atlantic sea spray. 7 4. ARDBEG 25 YEAR OLD XOP DOUGLAS LAING A single cask. The nose has sweet barley and coal dust intertwined with chocolate. The palate starts as subtle and complex until later creosote, wood embers and ash kick in. The whisky finishes with lighter peated malt, licorice and has a good length $1, ARDBEG AN OA A dram with smoky power, mellowed by a delectable, smooth sweetness. Hallmark Ardbeg peat, dark chocolate and aniseed are wrapped in smooth, silky butterscotch, black pepper and clove, before rising to an intense crescendo of flavour bottle limit $

8 6. ARDBEG KELPIE Kelpie is named for the legends of the sea around Ardbeg. Its powerful aromas of oily peat, salty seaweed and tarry rope have been produced by virgin oak casks from the Black Sea, intermingled with the hallmark Ardbeg flavour profile. Waves of spicy black pepper give way to a delectable tide of bacon and dark chocolate. Incredibly deep bottle limit $ BRUICHLADDICH BLACK ART 5.1 As ever, the composition of Black Art is a closely guarded secret, and this is distiller Adam Hannett s first such assembly. Rich aromas of fig, succulent autumn berries, sherry, cream, and malt feature on the complex, floral nose. Viscous on the palate, which opens dry, with developing berry fruits and spicy oak, plus dried fruits and candied peel. 9 8. BUNNAHABHAIN 46 YEAR OLD Bunnahabhain 46 Year Old Eich Bhana Lìr (meaning The great waves of the God Lìr ) is the oldest single malt ever released from Bunnahabhain Distillery. Aromatic, elegant, complex. Old leather and beeswax with candied orange peel and manuka honey, seductive. The palate is rich and silky, a refined balance of maltiness, citrus, heather honey, roasted nuts and a gingery spiciness. The finish is satisfyingly, very long and spicy bottle limit $10,

10 9. BUNNAHABHAIN 25 YEAR OLD Salty and seaweedy, the ocean hangs in the air glorious weight and sheen to the delivery. The early balance is nearly perfect as the thick fruit is thinned by the proud barley. The early, contemplative sweetness, buttressed by a wonderful mixture of sultana and Demerara, gives way to the drier oaks a malt with enough personality to till get its character across after 25 years. Who could ask for more? 94 points Jim Murray s Whisky Bible $ LAPHROAIG 27 YEAR OLD Double matured and bottled at cask strength. Limited edition: only 838 cases produced. The nose has ripe, pulpy tropical fruit flan, topped with finely chopped toasted macadamia nuts and smothered with vanilla cream. The flavours of smoke are tempered by limes and nectarines, giving way to sea salt and mild chilli. Antique leather and green tobacco leaf appear on the long finish $1,

LAPHROAIG 25 YEAR OLD The clean almost prim and proper fruit appears to have somehow given a lift to the iodine character and accentuated it to maximum effect.dangerously enticing the sweet peat slowly finds its footing and spreads beautifully; no shortage of cocoa: a kind of peaty fruit and chocolate bar doesn t suffer for sherry involvement. Very different from a standard, bourbon barrel-aged Laphroaig with much of the usual complexity reined in, though its development is first class. This one s all about effect and it works a treat! 94 points Jim Murray s Whisky Bible $ LAPHROAIG CAIRDEAS First fill Makers Mark casks are used for the first maturation of 5+ years in Warehouse 1 next to the Atlantic Ocean. Different ages are a-woken temporarily to be brought together, before laying to rest for a second time in smaller quarter casks. After further 6 month maturation, the liquid from 177 of these casks are put into the bottle at cask strength, resulting in a full-bodied and complex whisky with a long, creamy smoky finish bottle limit $

13 13. DUNCAN TAYLOR TANTALUS BUNNAHABHAIN 45YEAR OLD SINGLE MALT Very old Bunnahabhain, independently bottled by Duncan Taylor. This was distilled in 1968 and allowed to mature for 45 years before being bottled Aromas of sherried, sweet toffee and the faintest hint of cardamon. Fruit compote and caster sugar, this develops into roasted malt, elegant long lasting palate, rich dry fruits at the front and heavenly sweet notes in the back palate, peat is present and extremely well-balanced. The finish has mixed spice, nutmeg and caramel lingering for long after the final sip. A jewel to drink and enjoy $3,

14 14. PORT ELLEN 37 YEAR OLD The sixteenth Special Releases Port Ellen is the oldest to date. Initially, sea breeze on the nose, brine, rock pools, and gentle iodine, followed by dried fruits, peat, and wood polish. Fullbodied, very silky, again with brine to the fore, plus sweet peat, drying slowly, ginger, black pepper, and balancing tropical fruit notes. The finish is long, with burnt oak embers and licorice. 93 points Whisky Advocate $4, CAOL ILA 15 YEAR OLD Adopting the forceful style of earlier unpeated expressions, this complex CAOL ILA faithfully displays the make s typical youthful and vibrant DNA as it marries their glorious fruit and hints of smoke and the sea with smooth mature tannins, becoming succulent and softly relaxed with water $

15 Highland Scotch 16. ABERFELDY 21 YEAR OLD Bright gold colour. Bright, waxy aromas of honeycomb, dark caramel, raisin toast, and leather with a supple, lively, dry-yetfruity medium body and a tingling, interesting, medium-length nuts, honeyed dried fruits, floral earth, and cedar finish. A nicely nuanced and layered Highland single malt. 95 points Gold Medal Exceptional - Beverage Testing Institute $ ANCNOC 24 YEAR OLD Nose: Dates and spiced toasted raisin dominate Taste: no surprises, thick Melton Hunt cake, with extra lashing of molasses are quickly to the fore and linger. The spices begin early but multiply ulmo honey, then Lubeck marzipan and sultana enrich the middle ground Overall: big broadshouldered malt which carries a lot of weight but hardly veers away from the massively fruity path. 16 18. ANCNOC 18 YEAR OLD A gently grain-driven nose of toasted oats, breakfast cereal, and honeyed almonds introduces this delightfully mature whisky. The barrel s influence is felt on the palate and lingers into the dense vanilla bean finish. 94 points, Excellent, Highly Recommended Ultimate Spirits Challenge $ DALMORE QUINTESSENCE the first single malt to have undergone secondary maturation in five different types of California red wine casks: Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Sweet sherry, ripe cherries, marzipan, and white pepper on the nose. Rich and mouth-coating; strong flavour of thick-cut orange marmalade, oloroso sherry, malt, and milk chocolate. 18 20. DEANSTON 40 YEAR OLD...matured in refill bourbon casks before spending no fewer than 10 years in oloroso sherry butts. Rose petals, fresh pineapple, clotted cream, cinnamon, and dusty oak on the enticing nose. Unctuous in the mouth, with apple pie, cinnamon, hazelnuts, and ginger. Drying slowly to pleasing fruity, tannic notes. Extremely long finish, with a persistent citric tang. 90 points Whisky Advocate bottle limit $2, DEANSTON 18 YEAR OLD Sweetened cherry pie, with green grapes on the side and a warming cup of English Breakfast tea, too on the nose. The palate gives sunflower oil, linseed, and some light notes of peach before developing into a finish of green fruits, star fruit and anise. Gold International Wine & Spirit Competition $

19 22. GLENMORANGIE BACALTA The 8th Private Edition release. This one is finished in sunbaked casks which previously contained Malmsey Madeira. A predominantly sweet and fruity whisky, with caramel, honeyed almonds, peaches in syrup, and orange scone. Soft, soothing finish. Delicious! 91 points Whisky Advocate bottle limit $ LEDAIG 10 YEAR OLD A nose of smoked apples, paprika dusted kiwi fruits, sea salt and barbecue sauce spices. The palate is well balanced with equally complex notes of vanilla, smoke, spice and oak which are prominent but not dominant on the finish. Gold International Wine & Spirit Competition $

OLD PULTENEY 35 YEAR OLD A full-bodied expression, it is initially sweet and spicy on the palate, before quickly developing a range of flavours from honey, rum-soaked raisins and oranges to the heavier notes of seasoned leather, pralines and a touch of the salty North Sea air before finishing with waves of dried fruit. A truly indulgent, perfectly balanced whisky, on the nose, it brings together honey sweetness, exotic spices and citrus, before releasing more gentle undertones of vanilla bottle limit $1, OLD PULTENEY 21 YEAR OLD If you had the formula to perfectly transform salt, citrus, the most delicate smoke imaginable, sharp barley, more gristy barley, light vanilla, cherry blossom, light hickory, licorice, an the softest demerera sugar into the aroma of a whisky, you still wouldn t quite be able to recreate this perfection...by far and away one of the great whiskies...absolutely exploding from glass and vitality, charisma and class points Jim Murray s Whisky Bible $

WOLFBURN AURORA SINGLE MALT SCOTCH WHISKY Bursting with aromas of pineapple stalk, lime flower, honey, rolled oats, and a whisper of peat on the nose; it charges forward on the palate with golden raisin, plum, roasted peanuts, and sea salt. Tannins offer grip, with more fruit and a slow burn on the finish. 92 points Ultimate Spirits Challenge $

22 Speyside Scotch 27. ABERLOUR 18 YEAR OLD Nose: thick milkshake with various fruits and vanilla; Taste: immediate fresh juice which curdles beautifully as the vanilla is added; Finish: wonderful fruit-chocolate fudge development; long, and guided by a gentle oiliness; overall another high performance distillery age-staged bottling. 91 points Jim Murray s Whisky Bible $ AUCHROISK 25 YEAR OLD Distilled in 1990, this rare expression was matured in refill American oak hogsheads. Quite shy on the nose, even at cask strength. Ultimately, faintly floral notes, with pear drops, vanilla, and linseed. Very smooth on the palate, with soft fruity malt, vanilla, peach, and dark berries. Buttery mango and nutmeg in the finish Gavin Smith $

BALVENIE 21 YEAR OLD PORTWOOD Chocolate marzipan with a soft sugar-plum centre perfectly weighted: a rich tapestry of fruit and nut plus malt melts on the palate with a welter of drier, pithy, grape skin balancing the vanillas and barley oils; delicately dry with the vanilla and buttered fruitcake ensuring balance; what a magnificently improved malt 94.5 points Jim Murray s Whisky Bible $ BALVENIE 15 YEAR OLD SINGLE BARREL The Balvenie Single Barrel Sherry Cask has been matured exclusively in a single European oak sherry butt for at least 15 years. The term Single Barrel conveys the unique nature of the expression, which has been drawn from a single cask of a single distillation. A rich combination of elegant oak and subtle spice on the nose. The palate is smooth and complex with clear hints of dried fruit and spice overlaid with a gentle nuttiness that has a long and sherried finish $

25 31. GLEN GRANT 18 YEAR OLD RARE EDITION This is so in tune and well balanced it is impossible to nail exactly what leads and which follows. Instead, one is left mesmerised by the incredible brittleness of the barley, which seems to snap if you sniff slightly too hard; the sugars at once delicate and fruity yet with the crafted sharpness of a newly forged sword. And those tannins, somehow caught up in the overall firmness, the friability of it all. Has to be the essential Speyside nose ; taste: ow, wow! from somewhere light oils ooze to the surface to ensure some velvet caresses the sword. The oak builds up some steam, but the tannins never once outpoint the sugars and by the mid-ground, when a little cocoa can be detected spices play; Finish: the firmness here is so complete overall the most crystalline, technically sublime Speyside I have tasted in a very long time With only a very limited number of bottles available, Glen Grant 18 Year Old has been awarded three honors at the industry s most prestigious Jim Murray s Whisky Bible 2017 awards. GLENFIDDICH 40 YEAR OLD Stepping off a platform at a rural Scottish railway station in 1935 into a first class carriage: the coal smoke from the steam mixes with the leather and wood from the compartment while a hint of cigar smoke lingers in the air from a departing passenger. 28 34. GLENFIDDICH EXCELLENCE 26 YEAR OLD A rare and aged single malt Scotch whisky that has spent 26 long years carefully maturing in American Oak ex-bourbon casks. 29 36. GLENFIDDICH PROJECT XX Twenty of the whisky industry s most exceptional minds came together to create this truly unique, pioneering single malt expression. MACALLAN 25 YEAR OLD SHERRY CASK A superstar amongst whiskies, this 25 year old is heavily sherry influenced yet incredibly complex managing a balancing act between flowery elegance and rich smokiness. A superb after dinner malt, it has a nose of citrus balanced with cinnamon, sherry, and woodsmoke. On the palate it is full and rich with dried fruits and more woodsmoke. The finish is lingering with a hint of sherry, orange, and spice bottle limit $2, MACALLAN 17 YEAR OLD FINE OAK Matured in a mix of sherry and bourbon casks to showcase a lighter style from the famously rich, opulent sherried norm. 33 44. MACALLAN EDITION III Reminiscent of a fine fragrance, the nose leads with vanilla ice cream, fresh cut oak and delicate florals. Burnished oak delivers a soft ending. The palate is a sensory journey of sweet fruit and vanilla and rich fruit cake with suggestions of apricot, pear and crisp green apple. Hints of ginger and cinnamon are balanced with a light resinous oak finale. The finish is long, sweet and fruity, leaving a lasting impression on the senses $ A.D. RATTRAY THE MACALLAN DISTILLERY 21 YEAR OLD SINGLE MALT Exclusive cask bottling for BC Liquor Stores. Distilled October 9, 1995 at the Macallan distillery and then purchased by A.D. Rattray. Aged in a bourbon cask until June 2016, then the cask was divided and placed into two smaller Sherry Octaves casks and left aging until June 26, 2017 when it was bottled. Expect aromas of Brazillian nuts, figs, smoked maple bacon, coupled with sweet notes of fresh honeycomb, and banana peel. Vanilla on the front palate gives way to notes of tropical fruit, and orange zest, layered with pralines, and golden maple syrup. A viscous and absolutely luxurious mouthfeel. Pure Macallan $

34 46. MANNOCHMORE 25 YEAR OLD Along with Auchroisk, Mannochmore is one of Diageo s well-kept secrets. This 1990 distillate was matured in first-fill American oak hogsheads and European oak butts. Oily orange notes on the nose, plus vanilla, brittle toffee, and honey. The palate is substantial, rich, and sweet, with figs, sultanas, banana, and more honey, plus developing cloves. Raisins and plain chocolate in the long, spicy finish. Gavin Smith $ TOMATIN 1988 Nose: a firmness to the grape plus a degree of ye olde fruitcake; Taste: lush with seemingly malt at first but soon overtaken by a huge swirl of clean fruit mainly grape, ripe greengage and fat, sweet gooseberries burst at the skin; the undercurrent is thin acacia honey; Finish: drier cocoa but with molasses and fudge; overall another stunner from Tomatin. 35 48. LINKWOOD 37 YEAR OLD Delightfully clean and light, Linkwood both elegant and stylish is the epitome of Speyside finesse. Displaying typical fresh fruit and floral characters in its slow desire to be approachable, yet the nose gives no hint to the wonderful elegance and complexity evident on the palate and in the finish of this sophisticated malt $1,

36 Lowland Scotch 49. AUCHENTOSHAN 21 YEAR OLD Triple distilled, aged 21 years in American bourbon and Spanish sherry casks. Creating a refined Lowland Single Malt Whisky, ripe with gooseberries, sweet creamy vanilla, a hint of oak, warm honey, and the signature smooth, delicate, Auchentoshan taste Silver Medal International Spirits Challenge $ GLENKINCHIE 24 YEAR OLD The third Special Releases cask strength Glenkinchie is the oldest to date and the first to have been matured in European oak casks. Peach and pear soufflé on the initial nose, followed by apricots and toffee. The palate is rich and smooth, with dark fruits, walnuts, nutmeg, and a hint of resin. 38 52. HIGHLAND PARK 25 YEAR OLD I am a relieved man: the finest HP 25 for a number of years which displays the distillery s unmistakable fingerprints with a pride bordering on arrogance. 39 54. HIGHLAND PARK FIRE EDITION The long slumber in refill port casks has imparted this whiskey with dark chocolate and baked plum. The palate shows even more influence with a silky mouthfeel and hints of salt and smoke that bely the malt s Orkney origins. 94 points Ultimate Spirits Challenge $ HIGHLAND PARK VALKYRIE Elegant and intriguing aromas of freshly baked multigrain bread, smoked salt and tart dried peaches abound on the nose. Powerful in the mouth, the sweet and soft flavours of stone fruit give way to baking spices, vanilla, and smoked bulgur wheat. 40 Arran Scotch 56. THE ARRAN MALT 21 ST ANNIVERSARY LIMITED EDITION A fantastic limited edition Arran, bottled to celebrate the 21 st anniversary of Arran Distillery. Bottled at cask strength, there were only 5,988 bottles produced from a selection of ex-sherry hogsheads from the first three years production of the distillery.
