1 MENTONE MESSENGER FROGMORE CAMPUS NEWS CAMERON LANCASTER HEAD OF FROGMORE ISSUE NO 02 - TERM 1 23 FEBRUARY 2018 As the end of February approaches, the School year is certainly in full swing. Year 12 SAC tasks are well underway, Year 11s are adjusting to the increased demands of VCE and our Year 10s are finding their feet within the Frogmore Campus. In addition, students are extending their learning beyond the classroom through various excursions. Sporting teams are striving to make finals, with many students also looking ahead to the Winter season, rehearsals for Into the Woods and our music students continue, debating teams are preparing for the commencement of their competitions and volunteers are giving of their time to assist within our Social Services programs. We have recognised the wonderful achievements of our 2017 VCE students at our Academic Honours Assembly, welcomed Parents, both socially and at out Information Evening, and enjoyed a wonderful Prefects Ball last Saturday evening. With thanks to The Mentonians Association, we enjoyed a Chinese feast to celebrate the Chinese New Year on 16 February; the Year of the Dog. It has certainly been a busy start to the term and I commend our students for the manner in which they have embraced the challenges and opportunities thus far. Study Sessions A note to let all parents and students know that our After School Study Sessions in the Gregory Fish Library have commenced. All Frogmore students are strongly encouraged to make use of this worthwhile program and it was very pleasing to see students taking advantage of this opportunity during the week. In speaking with our top VCE students throughout the past few years, there is certainly a strong correlation between those who regularly attended study sessions and effectively utilised their time, and their level of success. A reminder that the GFL is open from pm Monday Thursday. Please note that the GFL is also open on Saturday 11am 3pm. WHAT S ON Tuesday 27 February Senior Debating Wednesday 28 February Founders Day Assembly Year Sport Training Saturday 3 March AGSV/APSV Sport continues Monday 5 March AGSV Girls Representative Trials Tuesday 6 March Mentone Stories Andrew Fuller Book online now Wednesday 7 March House Athletics Thursday 8 March All Schools Swimming (MSAC) Saturday 10 March No AGSV/APSV Sport due to Labour Day holiday School Tour Guides The School enjoyed a very good level of interest at our recent Saturday School Tours and, as always, our students received numerous comments on their friendly and engaging manner and the quality of the information they
2 provided. I would like to thank the following students for their assistance: Amelia Beaton, Jessie Chen, Brandon Demura, Sean Enright, Lachlan Howard, Eric Li, Dalia Ou, Alex Siedle, Meg Siedle, Guy Witherow. In addition, I would like to record my thanks to staff who also assisted throughout the morning. Student Performance System - Parent Dashboard Following on from our recent Frogmore information Evening I would also remind parents to ensure they are accessing our Student Performance System (SPS) to monitor their child s progress. This system has been fully designed and developed at Mentone Grammar and is being used successfully by all teachers from Years 5 to 12. The SPS provides parents with a detailed view of a student s progress including full Learning Behaviour ratings within a Learning Profile Table, and academic progress is tracked throughout the year using an interactive Progress Chart. Progress data is updated each night ensuring access to the most recent results. To access the system, parents should open My Mentone then click on the Student Performance System tile. The Parent Login will give access to the Parent Dashboard and the Help link leads to a User Guide, which explains other features of the system. This resource greatly assists in informing conversations within the parent teacher student partnership, ensuring that the many academic achievements of our students will be recognised more promptly and that support and assistance with goal setting will accompany any disappointments. If any questions/issues arise then please contact Mr Wayne Reed, Student Performance Manager, at wrr@mentonegrammar.net Trial GAT Advance Notice On Thursday 15 March all students studying a Units 3 & 4 subject in 2018 will be required to sit a trial General Achievement Test (GAT). This is an opportunity for students to experience a GAT examination under formal examination conditions in preparation for the actual GAT held on Wednesday 13 June. The trial GAT will be externally marked and feedback will be sent home. The Trial GAT test will be held from 8.45am to 12 noon Students will need to arrive at school by approximately 8.30am Full School uniform must be worn All students will be dismissed after the GAT examination. More information about the GAT can be found on the VCAA website and all parents will receive an containing further information in the coming week. Following the Trial GAT, students will be available to attend scheduled Parent-Student-Teacher interviews. Year 10 ESPT Testing On Thursday 15 March all Year 10 students will be taking part in Educational Testing from 8.30am to 12.30pm. Educational Skills Profile Test data is gathered each year from Years 4, 6, 8 and 10 (to fit beside NAPLAN Years 3, 5, 7 and 9). The data is standardised against three years of State data and helps us to: Monitor student achievement Assist with class placement Plan effective, engaging lessons Identify students at risk Identify gifted and talented students Gain detailed diagnostic information in literacy and numeracy Inform curriculum Set educational goals Calculate value added.
3 The students are testing in Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning, Mathematics, Writing, Spelling and Reading. Parents/Guardians will receive written reports when results are known and the data will be entered into our MG Student Performance System to assist our teachers. Students cannot prepare for these tests. They are asked to do their best. If you have any questions regarding this process, please contact Mr Wayne Reed (Student Performance Manager Following the ESPT tests, Year 10 students will be available to attend scheduled Parent-Student-Teacher interviews and should do so in full School uniform. Parent-Student-Teacher Interviews Parent-Student-Teacher Interviews for Years 5-12 will be conducted on Wednesday 14 March 4pm 8pm and Thursday 15 March 1pm 8pm. Please note that there are no classes scheduled for Thursday 15 March. However, all students undertaking a Units 3 & 4 study, including Year 11 students, will be participating in the Trial GAT and Year 10 students will be undertaking their ESPT testing during the morning. Students are required to attend interviews and are expected to do so in full school uniform. Interview bookings will be available via the Parent Lounge, please note that they are not open yet, and the times for these will be advertised in the coming weeks. Please also note that interviews will be of 7 minutes duration and I ask that parents adhere to this time limit to ensure that interviews progress on schedule. Should you require additional time to fully explore a particular concern then please liaise with the teacher to organise a suitable time. What s happening in Careers? Year 12 We have commenced small group careers sessions with Year 12 students during their study periods and expect to conclude these by the end of Term 1. We will provide each student with a booklet of information called, Careering through Year 12. The purpose of this booklet is to provide them with a timeline of Key dates and bring together a range of important issues students will need to consider over the course of the year. Year 12 is a time when important decisions with implications for a future beyond school, need to be made. This booklet is an attempt to make those decisions a little easier. We encourage students to attend career information sessions run by Universities and TAFEs, Private providers and Industry groups. Visit University open days (held mainly in August) and read the weekly Career Newsletter (LMS). Students have been invited to make their own appointments on an individual needs basis in Term 1. Individual careers appointments will be made with each student in Term 3 to assist them with their post school options including VTAC applications, which are due by the end of Term 3. Year 10 Careers Program We have commenced our Year 10 Career Planning lessons and will conclude these by the end of Term 1. The purpose of these lessons is to provide students with a framework for career development including an assessment of their skills, interest and personal style. All students have been asked to complete any career investigation activities they did not finish during these sessions including an About Me profile, which we have asked them to share with their parents/guardians. Every student has been given a copy of The Good Careers Guide and we have encouraged them to continue their research leading up to subject selection in Term 3. This information is contained within a folder we have given each student. Please ask your son or daughter to show you what they have completed as this forms the basis for discussion about the possibilities for the years ahead. The Morrisby Vocational Assessment program forms part of the Careers preparation process. Students will complete the interest questionnaire on Friday 11 May and testing will take place on Tuesday June 12. The Parent Student Information Evening will be held on Tuesday 17 July when the report will be distributed and explained in detail. We look forward to meeting students with their parents in Term 3 for their scheduled subject selection interview.
4 Max Marrow and Sue Carey Careers Counsellors Humanities Year 10 All Year 10s went to the Holocaust Museum in Elsternwick as part of their history studies. It was a moving experience for the students to meet a Holocaust survivor and hear their story. Through this excursion, students were able to expand their knowledge of the events that took place leading up to the Final Solution and understand the impact this had, not only during the war but also its ongoing impact today. Below are some of the reflections from our students: The Holocaust museum was interesting and showed the events and atrocities performed by the Nazis. The museum also heavily focused on the death and concentration camps. This further exposed the atrocities the Nazis did against the Jews. The Museum also provided the more human side of WW2, not just the battles and fronts but the horrors that the Jews went through. The stories that Garry told us and the things he witnessed made me more aware of the devastating effects of the Holocaust. After visiting the Holocaust Museum I realised that what I had learned in School was not nearly enough to really understand everything of the Holocaust. The museum took me to a new level of understanding. Instead of learning, I was feeling the experiences of suffering and despair within the victims. I felt like I learned more from Gary s talk than I ever could from just reading about it. The Holocaust Museum provided me with an unforgettable experience that assured me that anyone who has also gone through the museum will always remember to never forget. Even though we had learnt about Hitler and the Nazi policies in class with Miss Baxter, going to the museum and personally exploring the artifacts, hearing Gary s story and being closed off from the rest of the world, is a different learning experience. Being able to see, read and hear things that piece together such an unthinkable event is an otherwise unattainable educational experience. Sport A reminder that AGSV Summer Sport continues for both our Boys and Girls teams this week. Game times, venues and bus information are available via the LMS throughout the season and I encourage all students and families to check the LMS on Thursday or Friday of each week and ensure they have noted the details regarding that weekend s matches. Please note that any alterations to game times or venues, and information in regards to extreme/inclement weather, or can be found on the Mentone Grammar sport twitter Transportation is provided for most away matches with all buses departing from the Flag Pole on Venice Street - near the cricket nets on Frogmore Oval. No transport is provided for home games (incl. Keysborough). Can I ask that parents please be prompt in both dropping off and when collecting your child after games and ensure your child communicates to you bus return details. Should you have any questions regarding sport then please address those via Mr Stuart Bainbridge: spb@mentonegrammar.net. AGSV Summer Season Results Round 6
