1 MENTONE MESSENGER FROGMORE CAMPUS NEWS CAMERON LANCASTER HEAD OF FROGMORE ISSUE NO 03 - TERM 1 9 MARCH 2018 Student Leaders At our recent Frogmore Assembly, we acknowledged the leadership of a number of our students with their appointment as Captains for We congratulate the following students on their appointments and wish our Student Leaders all the very best for the year ahead: Academic Captain International Students Cap- Cayla Le Gear Zhousihan Yuan and Wencong Wu tains Emma Maggio and Jude Lowe Jessie Chen Pamela Bardis and Georgia Rowan Jessica Ewart-McTigue and Lachlan Newman Reisha Thacker Imogen Schwarz Performing Arts Captains Public Speaking Captain Social Service Captains Sport Captains Student Wellbeing Captain Visual Arts Captain Labour Day Holiday A reminder that there will be no school on Monday 12 March due to the Labour Day holiday. It has been a busy start to the year and the upcoming long weekend may, therefore, provide a welcome respite for our students. It might also provide time for some honest self-reflection to be undertaken in light of recently listed Learning Behaviours and ahead of Parent-Student-Teacher Interviews next week: Am I achieving my goals? What still needs work? Am I giving my best effort? Do I ask enough questions in class? Do I attend class well prepared? Am I using my diary effectively? Am I using my ICT device effectively? How can I do it better? WHAT S ON Monday 12 March Labour Day holiday Wednesday 14 March Parent-Student-Teacher Interviews (4pm 8pm) Thursday 15 March Trial GAT (Frogmore Gym) Year 10 ESPT Testing (GFL) Parent-Student-Teacher Interviews (1pm 8pm) Friday 16 March AGSV Swim Carnival (MSAC) Tuesday 20 March Twilight Tours Thursday 22 March Year 10 ESPT Catch-up testing Friday 23 March Shave For A Cure (casual clothes day) Wednesday 28 March Summer Sport Awards Night Thursday 29 March Official Opening Keith Jones Learning Centre Last day of Term 1 The long weekend should also provide time for a sleep in, a time to catch up with friends and family, perhaps time to enjoy a good book and, above all, time to enjoy some downtime ahead of a very busy next few weeks.
2 Parent-Student-Teacher Interviews A final reminder that Parent-Student-Teacher Interviews for Years 5-12 will be conducted on Wednesday 14 March 4pm 8pm and Thursday 15 March 1pm 8pm. Please note that there are no classes scheduled for Thursday 15 March. However, all students undertaking a Units 3 & 4 study, including Year 11 students, will be participating in the Trial GAT and Year 10 students will be undertaking their ESPT testing during the morning. Students are required to attend interviews and are expected to do so in full school uniform. Please note that interviews will be of 7 minutes duration and I ask that parents adhere to this time limit to ensure that interviews progress on schedule. Should you require additional time to fully explore a particular concern then please liaise with the teacher to organise a suitable time. Please also note that School buses will run on Thursday 15 March for our senior students. Morning runs will be as scheduled. However, afternoon departure will be at 1pm. Academic Awards Criteria With academic results emerging on the LMS, and with students establishing goals for their academic work, it is perhaps timely to review the criteria for Academic Awards, which are presented to students who have achieved outstanding academic results each semester. The criteria for Academic Awards in 2018 are outlined below: Year 12 Full Academic Colours - Awarded to Year 12 students who achieve a semester grade average of A+. Half Academic Colours - Awarded to Year 12 students who achieve a semester grade average of A. Year 11 Full Academic Colours - Awarded to Year 11 students who achieve a year-long grade average of A+. Half Academic Colours - Awarded to Year 11 students who achieve a semester grade average of A+. Certificate of Academic Merit - Awarded to Year 11 students who achieve a semester grade average of A. Year 10 Certificate of Academic Excellence - Awarded to Year 10 students who achieve a semester grade average of A+. Certificate of Academic Merit - Awarded to Year 10 students who achieve a semester grade average of A. Exceptional Circumstances In exceptional circumstances, the Principal may exercise discretion in the application of the awards criteria. Appeals Process A list of students who qualify for Academic Awards will be published prior to the Academic Awards Assembly. Students can apply to have their qualification for an Academic Award reviewed if they believe there is a factual error in the calculation of grades. Students cannot appeal on the basis of: matters that could have been avoided by the student, e.g. misreading an examination timetable or instructions, or matters related to school discipline matters of a student s own choosing, such as involvement in social events, sporting or training activities, school events or volunteer work. Appeals must be lodged by the designated closing date with the Deputy Head of Campus. Winter Uniform With Term 2 on the horizon, I would like to remind families of the expectation that students will attend in Winter uniform throughout Term 2 and Term 3. Please refer to pp of the diary for the full 2018 uniform lists for both boys and girls. Please note that all boys must wear long trousers and all girls are to wear a tie. To assist parents, hours for both the Uniform Shop and the P&F Secondhand Uniform Shop can be found on the School website. Please note that the uniform shops will be closed on Monday 12 March for the Labour Day holiday.
3 Frogmore Curriculum Year 11 Geography On 1 March the Year 11 Unit 1 Geography class undertook a field trip to Kinglake and the surrounding National Parks on Melbourne s northern fringes, to study the impacts of and responses to the devastating East Kilmore Fire of Black Saturday, 7 February This was all part of our studies on Hydro-Meteorological hazards and disasters. Bushfires have impacted Victoria for a very long time and it was fun to take the learning out of the classroom into a real life situation. We heard firsthand accounts of the fire from a teacher and a Park Ranger who had actually experienced the fires. We have been studying the impacts of and responses to bushfires on the environment and people. Before in class time we had been watching a documentary on the Black Saturday fires and this provided us with background knowledge and the impact it had on the environment and humans. The purpose of the trip was to observe and record the response, which the environment and people had to the fire, nine years later. The opportunity of seeing the responses to one of the most catastrophic bushfires in Australian history is an experience not all of us will easily forget and the personal recollections from witnesses of the fire were especially memorable. Steven Chandler Year 11 Geography class Year 10 Cocurricular Day The Pitch 2018 During our first cocurricular day, 80 students participated in a one-day program called, The Pitch, run by TRIPOD Enterprise Education. The purpose of the day was to help students prepare for work experience by exploring and identifying key enterprise skills essential for success in work and life. Students were engaged in a range of activities that enabled them to develop their interpersonal communication skills, problem solving and critical thinking abilities, listening and presentation skills. Through a creative challenge, students worked together in teams to come up with a business pitch that they then presented to a panel of judges. Students actively and collaboratively participated in the activities and embraced the day with enthusiasm and interest. Sue Carey Careers Counsellor Student reflection During our first cocurricular day, Year 10 students (not attending cadets) took part in a careers day. We worked in small groups building on our teamwork skills to take part in challenges. We were given tips on how to present ourselves ready for a working future and took part in mock interviews to put our skills to the test. It was extremely beneficial as we were able to take on the feedback given. Towards the end of the day, we finished off with a presentation where we had to brainstorm a new product and promote it to the group. Overall, we found this experience very helpful and the learning environment was great Beth Bridge and Lauren Malby-Luke Sport The AGSV Summer Sport season has concluded for our boys, although our girls teams will not be involved in action this weekend either, due to the Labour Day holiday on Monday. Our girls teams will resume matches on Saturday 17 March and we wish them every success for the remainder of the season. Premiers! We congratulate our Boys First Volleyball team who claimed the AGSV Volleyball Premiership last Saturday. In addition to the success of our volleyballers, there were also a number of 2nds, 3rds and Year Level teams that enjoyed extremely successful seasons. We are also looking forward to the AGSV Swimming Carnival next week and wish our teams every success as they look to defend their AGSV titles.
4 There is a great deal to celebrate given these sporting accomplishments and we look forward to acknowledging the efforts and achievements of our teams at our Summer Sports Award Night on Wednesday 28 March. Congratulations to all those involved in helping to make the Summer season such a memorable one for our School.
