I hope that everyone has enjoyed a safe and relaxing break and have returned ready for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Indeed, it has been wonderful to see our students immediately immerse themselves in school life and commence the year in such an enthusiastic and studious manner. Study Sessions A note to let all parents and students know that our After School Study Sessions in the Gregory Fish Library have commenced. All Frogmore students are strongly encouraged to make use of this worthwhile program and it was very pleasing to see students taking advantage of this opportunity during the week. In speaking with our top VCE throughout the past few years, there is certainly a strong correlation between those who regularly attended study sessions and effectively utilised their time, and their level of success. A reminder that the GFL is open from pm Monday Thursday. Please note that the GFL is also open on Saturday 11am 3pm. Parent Welcome Function The Parent Welcome Function is on tonight and it provides a wonderful opportunity for parents and staff to come together in a more relaxed environment and build those important parent-teacher and parent-parent relationships that will become increasingly important as the year unfolds. The evening provides an opportunity to meet with your child s Mentor and House Coordinator, people who will be important in providing support during your child s journey through Frogmore, before moving into the Thorold Theatre to hear a little bit more about our Campus. All parents are most welcome to attend. The evening will commence at 6.30pm with parents asked to meet with House Coordinators at the following House venues:

House Coordinators will then direct parents to meet with individual Mentors for a Mentor Information session. Homework Within Frogmore we believe in the value of strong routines and one of the areas we always touch on at the start of the year is homework. We need to have high expectations of our students, in all areas of their schooling, so that they develop high expectations of themselves. It was the Greek philosopher and scientist, Aristotle, who mused that We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit. Our students need to build and develop their routines so that they have good habits in place, both in preparation for and throughout their VCE years. And specifically, in terms of routine, students must ensure they develop an effective routine for homework and study. Homework is an essential part of the learning program for all year levels, and particularly for those undertaking their senior years of schooling. Students benefit from completing regular homework by developing organisational and time management skills, self-discipline and personal responsibility for learning, and it provides an opportunity for parents to actively participate in their child s education, by helping their child in establishing good homework patterns. And how much homework and study should students be completing each night: Year 10: Up to 2.5 hours per week night. Year 11: Up to 3 hours per week night Year 12: Up to 3.5 hours per week night We would strongly encourage students to ensure they complete some homework and revision every night, rather than completing a large amount on one particular night (usually the night before it s due) or on the weekend. One of the habits our students will need to develop, as they enter and progress through the VCE years, is building their knowledge gradually by regularly reviewing concepts rather than cramming in the lead up to a test or exam. Students are also encouraged to be self-directed, so they should spend time every night revising concepts covered in each subject, regardless of whether specific homework is set that day or not. Parent-Student-Teacher Interviews Advance notice that Parent-Student-Teacher Interviews for Years 5-12 will be conducted on Wednesday 14 March 4pm - 8pm and Thursday 15 March 1pm - 8pm. Please note that there are no classes scheduled for Thursday 15 March. However, all students undertaking a Unit 3/4 study, including Year 11 students, will be participating in the Trial GAT and all Year 10 students will be undertaking their ESPT testing during the morning. Students are required to attend interviews and in full school uniform. Interview bookings will be available via the Parent Lounge, please note that they are not open yet, and the times for these will be advertised in the coming weeks. Please also note that interviews will be of 7 minutes duration and I ask that parents adhere to this time limit to ensure that interviews progress on schedule. Should you require additional time to fully explore a particular concern then please liaise with the teacher to organise a suitable time.

3 Duke of Edinburgh Award Congratulations to the following students who successfully navigated around Wilsons Promontory National Park over the holidays. Tarn Smith, Kat Tsihlakis, Emma Rothberg and Brady Watts sacrificed four days of their holidays to complete the Duke of Edinburgh Award Silver Adventurous Journey. Heavy packs, sweat, blisters and questionable menu choices were a challenge but the reward was an opportunity to experience some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. For those familiar with The Prom we hiked from Telegraph Saddle to Sealers Cove, Little Waterloo Bay and spent our last night at Tidal River. As an added bonus we enjoyed a couple of hours of surfing under the tutelage of Crowie a local surf instructor. Special thanks to Laura Cox (2015) who came along as our First Aid officer and to Mr Tim Duivenvoorden (Year 9 Learning Journeys) for his expertise and enthusiasm. Any student interested in pursuing the Duke of Ed Award are invited to check out the page on the LMS for more information. Sport A reminder that AGSV Summer Sport continues for both our Boys and Girls teams this week, on Saturday 10 February. Game times, venues and bus information will be available via the LMS throughout the season and I encourage all students and families to check the LMS on Thursday or Friday of each week and ensure they have noted the details regarding that weekend s matches. Please note that any alterations to game times or venues, and information in regards to extreme/inclement weather, or can be found on the Mentone Grammar sport twitter MGS_Sport. Transportation is provided for most away matches with all buses departing from the Flag Pole on Venice Street - near the cricket nets on Frogmore Oval. No transport is provided for home games (incl. Keysborough). Can I ask that parents please be prompt in both dropping off and when collecting your child after games and ensure your child communicates to you bus return details. Adam Halliday represents Victoria! Over the Summer break, Adam Halliday (10G) represented Victoria in the State U15 Futsal team at the Futsal National Championships in Canberra in early January. He was also lucky enough to go to Spain with a Queensland team that played in the World Cup from 26/12/2017 till 1/1/2018! Futsal is a version of five a side Soccer, played on an indoor court, however unlike some other forms of the game, without the use of walls or nets. A smaller, harder ball is used with an emphasis on creativity and improvisation, whilst being a terrific game for honing your skills in preparation for the outdoor Soccer season.
