3 Academic News... From the Desk of Amy Lantigua It s that time of year again, accountability time. Yep, you guessed it! I ve been working on the School Improvement Plan. In the various plans we write for the State Department of Education to demonstrate what our students know, we account for our assessment results, report on improvements we made last year, and whether or not we met our goals. Additionally, we set new goals for this year. In this newsletter, I would like to share some of the information about how we did with meeting our goals last year. Our general, long term goals are to have our students achieve at high levels in reading, math and science. Specifically, we set a goal in each area, regarding a group of students who need improvement. Last year we set a goal for our 3rd graders to increase their reading scores on the Iowa Assessments. We met that goal and that group of students raised reading scores from 71% proficiency, up to 86%! The math goal was for our 10th grade students to improve their proficiency on the Iowa Assessment Math test. They also were able to raise their proficiency from 69% up to 72.5%! Our science goal was to increase proficiency of the 11th grade students on the Iowa Assessment Science test. They increased 11% from 76% up to 87%! News like this is a VERY good indicator that we are making strides towards increased achievement. To meet the federal No Child Left Behind requirements, each year our Iowa Assessment scores are reported to the state to demonstrate whether or not our students are making Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). If we do make adequate progress, hurray! If we don t make adequate progress, we receive a designation of School in Need of Assistance. This year is the first year that the Elementary building has been designated SINA for Math. We are working hard on a plan to address this need to improve. On a more positive note, we DID make adequate progress in Reading last year! We will continue to focus on both reading and math during our professional development days this year. In the next newsletter, I will share with you some of our goals for this year s academic achievement. If you would like to contact me regarding any of the information contained in our School Improvement Plans, please call my office at (319) School Board News School Board Elections were held on September 8th. We had 3 seats open. Pam Lee was the only member running for re-election. Official results show that Pam Lee received 102 votes, Barbara Thompson received 90 votes and Tom Berryman received 69 write-in votes. There were 17 scattered votes, for a total of 278 total votes cast L-M School Board Members Scott Wilson - President Pam Lee - Vice President Eric Schlutz Barbara Thompson Tom Berryman HS Chess Club Thursdays, after school in the Spanish room. Bring a board, if you have one!...pay ONLINE... If you need to put lunch money in your child s meal account or pay registration fees, you can do this from your computer at home or work, using your credit/debit card. Simply go to the Louisa-Muscatine School website and click on Pay Online in the black section on the left. To sign in, the User Name is your child s lunch number and the Password is their last name - it is case sensitive, so be sure to use a capital letter when needed. Then you will be able to select the items you would like to pay and be led through the steps to complete the transaction. If you need assistance with this be sure to call the school. Please be sure to keep a positive balance in your child s account! The balances that appear in PowerSchool are updated every evening. If your child s balance falls below $5, you will receive a SchoolMessenger phone call in the evening to remind you to add money to their account.
