Students do not need to prepare anything for the audition, it will just be doing a cold reading. The only requirement will be the student s commitment to attending most (if not all) rehearsals after school and learning his or her lines by the assigned due date. Hope to see you there!

4 A Note from the Curriculum Director by Amy Lantigua Brrr! Baby it s cold outside! However, I have some news that should warm your heart during this cold holiday season. The elementary school, which was designated as a School In Need of Assistance (SINA) in Reading last year, made some great growth on the Iowa Assessments. The school made enough growth that we are now considered SINA-Delay Status. Because we are still being watched by the State Department of Education to ensure that our growth will continue, we again have written a plan to demonstrate what the building will be doing to continue our success. This will also bring additional funding from the State to help us in our efforts to give Louisa-Muscatine students the best resources available. The plan focuses on the use of a new assessment tool called DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) with all students in grades Kindergarten through Sixth. These assessments are given three times per year, in the Fall, Winter, and Spring. From these assessments, teachers are able to tell specific skill areas that students are deficient in. From that point, students who are well-below target are placed into intervention groups that allow them to receive extra help in the specific areas that were identified during testing. Students who are designated below target are given additional support by their classroom teachers. Students who are on target continue to receive their regular classroom instruction. As weeks go by, the students progress is monitored and adjusted as needed. There are two goals for the plan: 1. By June 2014, the percent of Grade 1-6 general population students scoring in the non-proficient range as measured by NSS on the Iowa Assessments in Reading Comprehension test will decrease by 10%. 2. By June 2014, 100% of all Kindergarten students will score at benchmark as measured by the DIBELS kindergarten subtests. As written for the State, the plan is about five pages long! If you are interested in seeing a copy of our plan, or discussing the details, please feel free to give me a call at (319) extension 354. I would like to wish everyone a very happy and healthy holiday season. Coming in the next newsletter What Is the Iowa Core? Update from Athletic Boosters The L-M Athletic Boosters would like to thank everyone that has contributed to the sponsorship drive this year. The L-M Athletic Boosters use money donated to our organization to provide our athletes with proper training, equipment, facilities, and when needed, financial assistance to participate. We recently were able to help with purchase of a camera system at the High School gym to be able to view games/meets in the gym from the cafeteria or lobby of the high school. This camera system is also useful in recording sporting events as well as help with recording other events at the High School. Please come by and check this out during our winter sports. Thank you again for your continued support of the L-M Athletic Booster program! The L-M Athletic Boosters will be starting a Schwan s fundraiser in the next couple of weeks. We will be providing all the information on the start date and information on ordering on the L-M School web site. Please watch for it! Upcoming Meetings...December 4 - HS Library - 6:00 & January 8 - HS Library - 6:00. A Note from Music Boosters Music Boosters would like to thank to all the volunteers that helped at the football or volleyball concession stand. Your help assisted the Music program, teachers and students in many ways this year. We invite you to the next meeting on December 2nd at 5:45pm in the High School Chorus room. Not able to make the meeting and want to help? Music Booster officers are listed on the school website, please feel free to contact them.

5 The Louisa-Muscatine FFA chapter wrapped up the 2013 FFA contest year with great results! We had several teams compete in state contests and do fantastic jobs! The Livestock Evaluation and Judging team finished 45th out of 49 teams only having two out of the three scores needed for the contest. They received a bronze rating with a team score of 1,035 total points. In this contest students judged several classes of livestock including pigs, cattle, and sheep. The Meat Evaluation and Judging team finished 5th out of 21 teams in the state contest. They received a gold rating and a score of 1,402 total points. The team members judged and placed beef, lamb, and pork carcasses, quality and yield graded beef carcasses, completed problem solving calculations, and identified retail cuts of beef, pork, and lamb. The Dairy Evaluation and Judging team finished 12th in the state, receiving a silver ranking, and received 1st place in the linear evaluation of a dairy cow portion of the contest. Members also judged and placed six classes of dairy cattle, gave a set of oral reasons, and completed a general... FFA News... knowledge, problem solving, and herd management test. All the competitors from L-M did an outstanding job and are already working to improve for next year s state contests. The chapter was able to have four members represent Louisa-Muscatine at the National FFA Convention in Louisville, KY this October. Members who attended were able to visit with industry and collegiate representatives from across the nation along with attending FFA large group sessions and workshops. We are starting to prepare for our 2014 sub-district career development leadership contests, which will be held on February 17th by the Lone Tree FFA. Lastly, we are in the final weeks of our fruit sales. If you are interested in buying fruit, a poinsettia, or holiday wreath, please contact the Louisa-Muscatine FFA adviser Adam Crews at or adam. crews@louisa-muscatine.k12.ia.us to have an FFA member meet with you. Remove straps and ties. Make sure all drawstrings, ties and straps on all clothing and backpacks are removed. This will lessen the likelihood of them getting caught in bus doors, railings or aisles. Be especially careful of drawstrings with large knots or baubles on the end. Arrive at the bus stop early. Stay at least 20 feet away from the street while waiting for the bus. Do not approach the bus until it stops completely and the driver signals you to board. Enter in single file without pushing. Always use the handrail. Take your assigned seat right away. Remain seated facing forward. Keep your hands, arms and head inside the bus. Always listen to the driver s instructions. Follow the driver s instructions at all times. Be courteous to the driver and other students. You may talk quietly with your neighbors, but avoid making noises that could distract the driver or bother other passengers. Stay seated with your hands to yourself. To exit the bus, wait until the bus comes to a complete stop before standing up. Use the handrail when exiting the bus. Be sure to take all of your belongings. Be careful that none of your clothing becomes snagged on any part of the bus as you leave the bus. Stay out of the Danger Zone. This is the area close to the bus in the front, sides and back where the driver may have difficulty seeing you. To make sure that the driver sees you Safe school bus loading and unloading FOR BUS RIDERS while you are standing on the side of the street, take 10 giant steps ahead of the bus and out of the Danger Zone. You should be able to see the driver and the driver should see you. If you can see the driver s eyes, then the driver can see you. Never crawl near, around or under a bus. If you must cross the street after you get off the bus, wait for the driver s signal. First, make sure that the driver sees you.
