1 Louisa-Muscatine Community School District April & May 2015 Newsletter District Website: Class Motto: Author Unknown Su nday, May 17, 1:00 PM High School Gym Class Colors: Purple & Silver Class Flower: Alstroemeria PROM 2015 THE ROARING TWENTIES May 2 8:00-11:00 pm at The Rendezvous April 6- April 10 Tickets go on sale for the dance in the high school office. Tickets will be $20 each. May 2 Events 1:00-3:30 p.m. - Pictures in the chorus room. 4:00 p.m. - Grand March in the high school gym. 8:00-11:00 p.m. - Dance at The Rendezvous in Muscatine. 11:30 p.m. - 4:00 a.m. - After Prom Party at the high school. A special Baccalaureate service is being planned for all 2015 graduates, their families and friends. It will be held on Thursday evening, May 14, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. in the High School gymnasium. Local churches from the L-M school communities are sponsoring this evening of music and challenge in honor of the graduating seniors in the district. Seniors are asked to wear their caps and gowns and will be seated together as a class for this special service. Our speaker this year served as a TV sports anchor/reporter for 29 years, the last 24 in the Quad Cities TV market. He now serves as our Area Director for Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He loves Jesus and enjoys equipping coaches and teens to grow through the four core values of FCA Integrity, Service, Teamwork, and Excellence. Please join us as Dan Pearson brings this year s Baccalaureate address. As ministers in your communities, we encourage graduating seniors, their families and friends to plan to attend and enjoy this memorable evening together. All attending the Baccalaureate service are invited to the Grandview Community Bible Church Friendship Center following the service for pizza, snacks and fun.
2 As the summer approaches, we think of warm weather and the freedom of vacation. Summer can also be a time of great learning opportunities for our students. Here are just a few ways you can continue and extend the learning, even when school s out! 1. Take trips to the local library to read books. Older siblings can read to younger siblings. Teenagers can get hooked on a novel. Little ones can bring books home to read and look at during the week. 2. Encourage children to do the math when planning your vacations or outings. How much money will it cost to drive to Burlington (gas), go to Fun City (entrance fees for the family), and eat lunch while there? 3. Ask children to help plan a healthy menu for the week. They can search the store ads for the cheapest prices, or take a calculator to the store to add up the amount the groceries will cost. 4. Keep some logs - how much time is spent doing physical activity or playing outside? How much time is spent watching T.V., or playing video games? What movies did they watch this summer? What books did they read? (Teachers would LOVE to see that list!) 5. Research the history of places you go, or some surrounding towns. 6. Go to local museums and find out what you can learn there! SPEECH EVENTS L-M Speech Team is excited to celebrate our 2015 speech season. Four groups of students performed at Districts Large Group competition in Wapello in January. Three groups went to State Contest. We congratulate Katie Dean and Kendall McKasson for making state wth their One-Act Play, Helping Hamlet. L-M submitted a short film entitled 2 Guys Hide a Body created by Landon Walsh, Joe Gephart, and Micah Van Sickle. The film earned a Division I rating at State Contest. Seven students competed at Districts Individual Events in Tipton in February and two of them, Micah Van Sickle and Kendall McKasson, went to State Individual Events in Cedar Rapids. We congratulate Micah on his Division I rating for his performance of Mork and Sports at State Contest. Other participants in competitions this year included Mark Dusek, Ben Chapman, Hunter Werner, and Daulton Leach. Both the Large Group team and the Individual Events team have qualified for Academic Excellence Awards from the Iowa High School Speech Association for having exceptional GPAs during the Speech Team season. Our last event of the school year will be Drama & Desserts in the High School cafeteria on May 8th at 6:30 PM. Join us for an entertaining evening and the presentation of awards and recognitions. FALCON-WEAR ON-LINE STORE Phelps Custom Image Wear will be hosting an on-line store for Louisa-Muscatine schools beginning April 5th. The store will feature several clothing items with a simple L-M logo and be open the first full week of every month. A percentage of the sales will go directly to the Activities/Athletic fund. Remember, the site will only be open the first full week of every month, so look for it from April 5-11 and then May 3-9, etc. Be sure to look for the link to it on our district website! May 26, 2015 is currently the last day of classes for students. We have had 4 snow days so far this school year - January 7 & 9, February 2 and March 3. Any future snow dates will be added to the end of the school year.
3 FINE ARTS SHOWCASE L-M s annual Fine Arts Showcase celebrating music and visual arts is scheduled for May 11 for Junior High and May 12 for High School at 7:00 PM.
