2 Library News We are officially back at school and into the swing of things here at L-M! Both libraries have been full of excited kids, ready and eager to read! At the end of last school year, L-M libraries received a $2,500 donation from America s Farmers Grow Communities, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund and directed by local farmer Bill and Margaret Furlong of Louisa County. The donation will help our libraries purchase new books and resources that will directly impact our student population. As a small, rural school district, our library budget can only stretch so far. This donation will allow us to fill in gaps in our collection and purchase books that teachers and students have requested. This donation is so appreciated and could not have come at a better time as our collection is in need of updating. For six years, America s Farmers Grow Communities has collaborated with farmers to donate over $22 million to more than 8,000 community organizations across rural America. Winning farmers will direct their donations to nonprofits to help fight rural hunger, purchase life saving fire and EMS equient, support ag youth leadership programs, buy much needed classroom resources, and so much more. Thanks SO much to the Furlongs and America s Farmers Grow Communities! Your generosity is greatly appreciated! News from Spanish Class... L-M Spanish students are once again logging onto the Duolingo Language Program every Thursday. This free, self-paced program challenges the student s writing, reading, and listening abilities in Spanish. Once students complete the program, students will receive a certificate to hang on the Duolingo Hall of Fame wall in the Spanish room. Students will also have the option to study a third language on Thursdays once they have completed the Spanish section. Currently, three students from L-M have completed the Duolingo Spanish program, Jose Nieto, Mariah Pugh, and Amy Magana. OPEN ENROLLMENT DEADLINES Pursuant to the laws that govern open enrollment, applications filed after the March 1, 2016 for the school year will not be approved unless the reason for late filing qualifies for good cause. Good cause means a change in the status of a child s resident district for any of the reasons listed below. The deadline for kindergarten students is September 1. *Family moved to a new district of residence *Change in the marital status of the student s parents *Placement of the student into foster care resulting in new resident district *Adoption resulting in new resident district *Participation in a foreign exchange program *Participation in a substance abuse or mental health treatment program resulting in new resident district *Failure of negotiations for reorganization or rejection of proposed reorganization plan *Failure of negotiations for whole grade sharing or rejection of whole grade sharing *Loss of accreditation or revocation of a charter school contract *Severe health and/or pervasive harassment (If the application is being made in response to an alleged severe health need or pervasive harassment of student, the RESIDENT district will notify the applicant of status. The applicant must provide resident district with status of health concern or history of harassment occurring after March 1 deadline.)

3 KCRG - Change in Weather Alert Texts Effective Monday, September 19, KCRG-TV9 is ending its text alert service for its closings and cancellations system. That system let your students, parents and staff sign up for free to get a text message as soon as you entered any delay or cancellation into our system. However, it had become inefficient and costly to use texting services, which can charge a fee to both KCRG and the user. Instead, KCRG-TV9 is now offering push notifications through the KCRG News app, available in the i-tunes and Google Play. Users will be able to sign up to receive a notification on their smart phone anytime you enter an alert into the KCRG system. It is the same essential function as our text alert service. If you already have the KCRG-TV9 News App, make sure the is update downloaded (most will automatically update). Once the updated app is installed, open up the settings section by tapping the gear icon in the upper right hand corner. You should see an option for closings alerts. Tapping on that option, you will be able to search for a district by name, county or even zip code. Then turn on the button for the school(s) for which you want to receive notifications. That s it. Once a school you ve selected issues a closing or delay, you will get a push alert on your phone instantly. NON-DISCRIMINATION POLICY It is the policy of the Louisa-Muscatine CSD not to discriminate on the basis of race, creed, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, gender, disability, religion, age, political party affiliation, socioeconomic status, or actual or potential parental, family or martial status in its programs, activities, or employment practices as required by the Iowa Code. Homecoming in Review The Louisa-Muscatine falcons beat the Columbus Wildcats Sydni Wagner & Max Wetzel were crowned homecoming queen & king. Lowden Gabriel, Dayne Wadden, CJ Sturms, Austin Leopard, Randyn Carter, Lani Hillard, Sydni Wagner, Bailey Downing and Dani Courbat were also on the court. 125 students attended the homecoming dance on Saturday.
