2 Employee of the Month January 2017 Gustavo Gonzalez Our Employee of the Month for January 2017 is Gustavo Gonzalez. Gustavo has worked at The Athenaeum for 18 years. Gustavo is a valued member of The Athenaeum steward team. His primary job responsibilities include setting up event buffets and maintaining and polishing kitchen equipment. Gustavo s precision and diligence make him the best choice for Employee of the Month. Gustavo and his wife Lourdes have been married for 23 years and live in Pasadena with their five children. The Gonzales family enjoys going to Dodger stadium to take in the beautiful view and enjoy Dodger dogs. Congratulations Gustavo, on a job well done! 2016 Employee of the Year Michelle Gecoso Our Employee of the Year for 2016, Michelle Gecoso, has been with The Athenaeum for ten years. Michelle is originally from Manila, Philippines where she studied Architecture in college. After living in Saipan for 11 years, Michelle moved to the United States in Michelle was a familiar face at the Front Desk for nine years before moving into Accounts Payable and Payroll in July Michelle and her husband Donald have two sons; Matthew Dominic, who graduated with honors from Cal Poly Pomona s School of Engineering and Darren who is a high school senior. Michelle's extraordinary customer service skills and attention to detail made her the right choice for Employee of the Year. Congratulations, Michelle, on a job a well done! Spring is In the Air As I write this column, it is about 71 degrees outside, the sun is out and it is a magnificent day to take a stroll around the new Pavilion kitchen. We are all very excited to see the opening of the Pavilion in April which will feature grab-and-go lunch items and menu selections prepared swiftly for members on-the-go, or for those hurrying back to their offices, or simply for those who want a quick bite to eat. The regular al Fresco season will still open for dinner in May possibly a week or two earlier than its usual opening date. Keep an eye out for blasts as we announce more definitely the dates for these events. In January, Executive Chef Kevin Isacsson introduced the winter menu. The new spring menu will be implemented mid- April so if you have not yet tried some of the winter items, I d like to share some of my favorites. At lunch, the Kale Quinoa Caesar Salad is a great addition to the menu. It is light but filling and won t leave you hungry an hour after lunch. The Skirt Steak Salad is also an excellent choice along with the Pan Roasted Curried Chicken Breast Salad. Did you know that you can order your salads with your choice of protein grilled chicken, grilled shrimp and salmon for just a few additional dollars? Ask your server next time you visit the club. If I skipped breakfast, I go for more substance and order the Olive Oil Poached Albacore Sandwich, the Roasted Vegetable and Cheese Empanadas or the Red Wine Braised Short Rib (to die for.) At dinner, try the Beet Salad or the Truffled Wagyu Beef Ravioli to start your meal. For a main entrée, my favorites are the Seared Diver Scallops, the Bacon-Wrapped Monkfish and the Grilled Hanger Steak. Of course, you won t go wrong whatever you order at lunch or dinner. Chef Kevin and his crew really do a wonderful job in the kitchen. For those who have not been in club lately, did you know that we have a Mexican buffet in the Rathskeller every Wednesday? The menu is posted weekly in the website caltech.edu. The buffet is only $11.95 per person. Come visit soon on a Wednesday and enjoy an excellent prime rib buffet in the dining room or for a more casual atmosphere, the Rathskeller is waiting for you. I look forward to seeing you at The Athenaeum. Please drop by my office when you are next at the club. Marisu Jimenez General Manager (Marisu s Message Corner) 2
