2 Dear Guest, Welcome to NCI Residence! We hope your stay with us will be a pleasant experience. In the following you will find important and practical information with regards to your stay at the residence. NCI OFFICE NCI has its Delhi office in the residence. You are welcome to visit the office through entering from the main door outside. Office hours are Monday to Friday pm. The office staff is most of the times available during office hours. In case you need to speak to someone outside the office hours please contact the Director Mr. Samrat S. Kumar (tel ) or Mr. Naveen Kishore (tel ). SERVICES House Keeping: The housekeeper, Kanta, is present every day (except for Sundays) between 9 am and 4 pm. She is responsible for cleaning, dish washing, laundry, and shopping in the local market and cooking. Please inform the office if you wish your room to be cleaned. Bed sheets are changed after 2 to 3 days. For details on cooking services see the section menu on page no. 7. The housekeeper gets her salary from NCI. Guests are not expected to pay for her services, as it is part of the room rent. Laundry: If you want the housekeeper to do your laundry, please place the laundry basket outside your room. Upon your request she will deliver your clothes for ironing with the presswallah who charges INR 6 per piece. The ironed clothes will be delivered to your room in the afternoon. Meals: You have the possibility to order lunch during weekdays at the office. It will be prepared by the housekeeper. Please make your order one day in advance by telling it to Mr. Naveen in the office. A choice of meals is listed on page no. 7. Alternatively, you can eat outside. The nearest restaurant is Café Turtle that is located at a 2 minutes walking distance from the residence. 2

3 There are several menus of home delivery services (see below). Restaurants are also located in Nizamuddin West, as for instance, the Indian fast food plaza located at its entrance (open 24 hours a day). There are also plenty of good restaurants in South Delhi (see guidebooks), some of which also provide home delivery. Taxis: A good, reliable taxi stand is located in the local market. The phone number to this taxi stand is: or If you want to go several places during the day the cheapest option may be to book a half-day taxi or a full day taxi. The tariffs are listed on page 8 for your reference. For an airport pick up/drop you may contact Mr. Naveen in the office. Please pay directly to Mr. Naveen in the office and collect your invoice from him. Auto-rickshaws are most easily found outside the gates of Nizamuddin East. NCI is located at a 5 minutes-walk from Nizamuddin gate no. 3 (at the NCI gate, turn left and walk straight ahead, past the roundabout, go down to the Murali road). Repairs and maintenance: If there is a problem with any equipment at residence of NCI, Mr. Naveen should be notified. Keys: All guests will get a set of house and room keys. Please be careful to keep the keys safely. On departure time, please leave the keys in the room (during office times) or hand them to the driver of NCI cab (outside office hours). In any case somebody does not return the keys while leaving NCI, s/he will be charged 38 Euros. Important: If you plan to make your own transport arrangements to and from the residence, please keep in mind that NCI staff is working at the residence/office from pm, Mo-Sa. If you arrive or depart during the working hours, one of our staff members will help you with checking in and checking out. In case guests arrive outside of office hours and on Sundays, we ask to book a taxi through NCI (Mr. Naveen), as the set of keys will be given to you by the driver upon arrival, and must be handed over to him upon departure. This is currently the only possibility to check in and out outside office hours. Thank you for your cooperation on this matter. Shopping: There is a small market nearby NCI. At the NCI gate turn right and walk down to the crossing where you will find fruit and vegetable vendors, a few small food stores, a pharmacy, an Internet/photocopy service, a beauty parlor with hairdresser and massage, a good boutique for clothes (Anokhi), and a taxi stand. There are several larger good markets in South Delhi, like Khan Market which is good for western style food shops, Indo/Western clothes, music and DVD shops, several bookshops, a delicatessen store, a liquor store and cafés. 3

4 The South Extension (part I and H) and Greater Kailash 1 (M-block and N- block) are other markets close by. In case of illness: East West Medical Center (EWMC) is a highly recommended hospital in case you need a doctor. It is a small, private hospital and the service is excellent. They have doctors 24 hours and do house calls if necessary. A consultation costs around INR 4500, however house calls are much more expensive. EWMC currently located at 38 Golf Links New Delhi, You can make a call to the hospital to book house calls. The phone numbers are: (Hospital), Phone: (011) , , Emergency: In case of emergency, please contact Mr. Naveen or Mr. Samrat Important Security Warning: As NCI is seen by outsiders as a regular residence, vendors and other people will frequently show up at the door step. Unfortunately, a very common scam in Delhi is that persons arrive at the doorstep pretending to be repair men from service companies, such as for the AC or the gas company. They may carry fake ID-cards. If these strangers are allowed to enter the flat, they typically pretend to locate and fix a problem with the kitchen stove or one of the ACs, etc. Before leaving they will charge you a large amount of money. Please note that Mr. Naveen or the Mrs. and Mr. Khosla (the landlords living upstairs) will always notify you in advance if any repair work is going to take place. If there is any uncertainty about the identity of a visitor, please call Mr. Samrat or Mr. Naveen Never let any stranger enter the flat! EQUIPMENT OF THE FLAT Air Conditioning: All bedrooms are equipped with air conditioning. Books and magazines: There are several books and magazines in the cupboard in the common room. Please feel free to read them and also add books you do not want to take back with you. Internet and Printer: The residence of NCI has wifi internet in all rooms The password for using Wi-Fi on your own laptop or device is: You can use the printer in the office during office hours (Mo-Fr ). 4

5 Drinking water: A mineral water tank with a tap is placed on the small table in the living room. Coffee Machine and Toaster: You are provided with a filter coffee machine and an electric toaster. Fridge: Guests may keep their food in the fridge. However, it is very important that you throw away all your food products, including unopened cans and fresh products before you leave. In case you wish to give any of these to other occupants or the housekeeper, they need to be notified. Electricity: Electricity is expensive in India, so please remember to turn off lamps, air conditioning, fans, geysers etc., when leaving your room or the flat. In Nizamuddin East electric power cuts are not uncommon, especially in the summer. Fortunately these power cuts tend to be of a short duration. If a power cut does not seem to have affected other houses in the area, it may be caused by an overload at NCI, and you must ask the housekeeper Kanta or the landlord to get the fuse box checked for you. For plumbing or any other problem please notify Kanta or Mr. Naveen. Linen: Bed linen, towels, and toilet paper are provided by NCI. Please notify the housekeeper or Mr. Naveen if you need fresh linen etc. Maps: There is a map book at New Delhi in the flat as well as some guidebooks. Please feel free to use them, but please do not remove any of these from NCI. Newspapers: The daily newspapers Hindustan Times and Times of India are delivered at the door every morning around 7 a.m. and can be found on the terrace floor or dining table. Safe-keeping of valuables: The bedrooms can be locked from the inside, but not from outside. Therefore it is important to keep the entrance door locked at all times. Some bedroom cupboards and/or drawers are provided with locks. Please use these spaces for the safe keeping of your valuables. Telephone: NCI has a landline with the number which can be used for local, long distance and international calls. The phone bill will show all the calls made and the guest is responsible for keeping track of his/her calls. Please note your international and long distance calls in India in the register kept near the telephone. 5

6 TV: The TV has around 70 channels. For English language news channels see e.g. the channels Headlines Today, 24/7, NDTV. BBC World, or CNN. Please note that the frequencies of channels often change. The common living room The common room is a multi-function space, containing a dining table, and sitting area. Please note that this room primarily is a working space with priority given to meetings held by NCI. If not interfering with work activities, the room may be used for meals and relaxation. 7 MENU Upon your request, the housekeeper will purchase ingredients and/or prepare meals for you. Lunch can be served from 12:30 onwards. Please allow for ample preparation time by placing your order as early as possible in the day. Ask for mirchi if you want a more spicy Vocabulary for breakfast items: chai (tea), chini (sugar), nimbu (lemon), coffee (coffee), dudh (milk), dahi (yoghurt), bread (bread), makhan (butter), djam (jam), ande (eggs), narangi ki djus (orange juice), djai ka daliyu (oatmeal), seb (apples), narangi (oranges), kele (bananas), aam (mangoes) How to order and pay: Please place your order in the office, where you specify the dishes (using the Hindi names of dishes), the number of persons participating in the meal, and approximate mealtime. Advance money must be given, and it will later be returned with the shopping receipts and change to you. If you are regularly having your meals prepared by the housekeeper it may be simpler to deposit in the office a weekly advance, for instance INR Please note that prices may vary, most vegetables are seasonal, and are more expensive out of season. 8
