2 Introduction This booklet contains reference tables highlighting the carbohydrate content of a range of everyday foods. Use the tables to help you to calculate the amount of carbohydrate () in the foods that you eat. You can then adjust your meal time insulin dosage according to your insulin:carb ratio to dose for the carbohydrate in your food. 1 carbohydrate portion (CP) = 10g of carbohydrate Alcohol Irish cream 1 measure 50ml (1 unit) / 11g 1 22g Step 1 Identify any carbohydrate containing food within the meal/snack/drink you are about to consume. Step 2 Find out the weight of the food containing carbohydrate. Check the food label on the packaging OR use this reference guide - for accuracy you can weigh the portion of food. Step 3 Identify the amount of carbohydrate in that portion of food. You can look at the food label under the per portion column - use this reference guide or work out the amount of carbohydrate in your portion using this equation: Carbohydrate per X weight of portion 100 Step 4 Dose your insulin to match the ; for example if ratio of 1:10g then 30g of (3cps) = 3units). Port 1 measure 50ml (1 unit) Sherry 1 measure 50ml (1 unit) Spirits (whiskey, brandy, rum, vodka, gin) White wine (dry) White wine (sweet) Champagne 1 measure 50ml (1 unit) 1 large glass ( 3 units) 1 large glass (3 units) 1 glass (1 units) 6g 12g 3g 0 6g ml 2g 0 0.8g 250ml 15g 1 6g 125ml 2g 0 0.8g Example To find out the amount of carbohydrate in a serving of cooked rice: - Using reference tables Portion weight: 2 tbsp. = 70g. Reference table indicates 11g of in 1tbsp (35g) therefore 70g Rice contains 22g (2). - Using equation: in rice (reading label = 31.1g per ). Weighed portion = 70g (weigh or check weight in reference table). 31/100 x 70 = 21/7g, therefore 70g rice contains 21.7g (2). Page 2 Page 31

3 Alcohol Do not dose your insulin for the carbohydrate in alcoholic drinks. Drinking alcohol whilst using intravenous insulin treatment can increase risk of hypoglycaemia. Always test your blood glucose level before and after drinking and never drink on an empty stomach. Please follow advice from your diabetes specialist nurse and dietitian before carbohydrate counting for alcohol as your insulin dosage will likely be lower than your calculated dose using your normal carb:insulin ratio.
