3 The Flavors of Terroir for Oak Grove Reserve Wine Vineyards What could be more stately and picturesque in the middle of a vineyard than an oak grove? Having stood all tests of time, while enjoying a prolific wealth of fortitude, an oak grove gives back to the land in more than full measure. It is these qualities of strength, endurance, and virtue that gave Oak Grove Reserve Wines its name. Once the inspiration took seed, the next step was to find high quality fruit. And so, it was decided that Oak Grove Reserve Wines would be produced primarily from fruit grown in the Central Coast viticultural regions of California. Most notable wine regions are Monterey, Arroyo Seco, and Paso Robles. These Central Coast regions were chosen because this is an area not only devoted to tradition, but wine grape growing families here also understand the importance of being progressive with their farming practices. And with these grape growers, every innovation is executed in a controlled and thoughtful way. Monterey County is a grape growing area of California that s gorgeous and unique. Picturesque in its natural beauty, it s an undulating, natural phenomenon that begins with the rugged Pacific coastline to its west. This segues into fertile valleys, which are subsequently framed by ascending mountain ranges to the east. These lush valleys are known for perfect grape growing conditions. Abundant sunshine by day; cool, ocean fog by night; and ancient alluvial soils give this region a reputation of producing world-class wines. These alluvial soils are finely layered, very deep, and primarily recognized for creating exceptionally inexhaustible, grape growing conditions. With farmers who are finely attuned to this region s potential, grapes grown here have a delicious flavor profile. Arroyo Seco is an extraordinary region within Monterey County. It s found in a section where the Santa Lucia Mountain range is to the west, the Gavilan Mountains are to the east, and the Salinas Valley expands right down the middle. This area is then broken down into mini AVAs, because each section has its own unique, climatic terroir. For the Arroyo Seco region, it is definitely highlighted by a remarkable gorge, cut by the perpetual movement of the Arroyo Seco River s flow through eons of time in this valley. Alluvial soils, Arroyo Seco River climatic influences and cooling Pacific breezes produce grapes of significant quality. Paso Robles is another region where great fruit is being produced, and in the last 10 years has really come into its own. Paso Robles is located midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles along the Central Coast. It has distinct soils, individual microclimates, unusual topography, and varying marine influences. Paso Robles terroir has the greatest day to night temperature ranges of any other AVA in California, which also produces one of the longer grape growing seasons. This gives Paso Robles vines plenty of time to produce fully ripe grapes, while the overnight cooling influences keeps the grapes acidity levels in perfect balance. As I usually do with tastings at home, I arranged the bottles in a semblance of sense (concealed inside brown paper bags) but allowed a hired pourer to determine the final order.

That means that not only do the tasters not know the genre of the wines, they don t know anything about them, neither grapes nor region nor country nor vintage, only the color. Ha! What fun! My guests included people from the wholesale and retail arms of the wine business and one fellow blogger, Ben Carter (wines-by-benito.blogspot.com). The wines, all red, were arranged in flights of six, six, six and four. As I usually do with tastings at home, I arranged the bottles in a semblance of sense (concealed inside brown paper bags) but allowed a hired pourer to determine the final order. After the first flight, I revealed that all the wines were made from the same grape. Groans, curses, pens thrown into the air. Well, said one taster, that ruins whatever I thought was going on here. Tee-hee! After the second flight, I revealed that all the wines came from the same region, but not what the region was. More consternation of the you-have-got-to-be-kidding variety. I also mentioned that there was a general order to the tasting, but left that for my colleagues to figure out. Snicker-snicker! Finally, when we had gone through four flights, all questions were answered. The wines were made from petite sirah grapes. The place was California and all over California, from south in Santa Barbara to north in Lake County and the order was from lowest to highest alcohol content, about a modest 13.5% to a blockbuster 16%. Petite sirah not syrah is a confusing grape because while it is a hybrid grape, a cross of peloursin + syrah, its name has became attached over generations to the true syrah grape and to the rough n ready durif grape. In fact, most of what s called petite sirah in California is actually durif, with many of the old vine vineyards being a combination of all three, with other red grapes, mainly Rhone Valley varieties, thrown in. Petite sirah is notable for shaggy tannins, rollicking spice, deep colors and jammy black fruit flavors. If not handled carefully, the tannin can overwhelm a wine, and my lower scores tended to go to wines with out-of-control tannins. Treated deftly, the grape can produce wines of rustic nobility. The alcohol levels tend to be high, as you can see by the list of wines that follows. Oak Grove Wines 2005 Reserve Petite Sirah, California About $8. My score: 17 Alcohol 13.6% Intense and concentrated purple color, intense and concentrated nose, smoke, potpourri, currant and blackberry, briers, brambles, underbrush cedar, black olive, smoke, ash and minerals, lovely depth and personality, EXCELLENT.
