1 Quinta Quarterly WINTER 2016 EVERY SIP YOU TAKE When I was a little girl, I knew that vintage meant work. Hard work. It was that time of year when Dad grew a scraggy beard and wore a pained expression whilst he plunged and pressed, sniffed and swilled. He pumped over, hauled hoses and shovelled grape marc and must to the cows, amidst an excited air of anticipation. Would this year s port or durif be his best? Would the machinery hold out until the tokay was ready to harvest? Would it rain? I got a taste of this hard yakka with S&K winemakers, Andrew and Joe, making room for my pink hi-vis shirt and steel capped boots. It was with trepidation and curiosity that I ventured out of the cellar door and into the vat, hoping to deepen my understanding of what makes a great wine, and why did Andrew often look exasperated in marketing and product meetings? It s not that hard to make wine, surely? I discovered so much more and developed a great appreciation for winemakers and viticulturists around Australia; for our industry may seem glamorous and fun from the outside but there s a huge element of luck, trust, problem solving and grit. As Andrew said you only get one chance at this each year, adding to the high level of expectation. What ends up in a nicely packaged bottle is a reflection of so many different parts and people from around the country. Each time you take a sip from an Australian bottle of wine, know that it s not just the winery that you re supporting, it s the mechanic, plumber, delivery driver, package supplier, printer, bottling truck operator, tour guide, manual labourer and electrician, to name a few.
