Vinexpo Hong Kong 2016 was such a success, thanks to you! The 7 th edition of the show was characterised by the recovery of the Chinese market and the quality of buyers present. Hong Kong is now considered the definitive hub for the wine and spirits sector in Asia-Pacific, making Vinexpo Hong Kong the must-attend trade show of The show s new business-boosting services the Hosted Buyer Program and the One to Wine Meetings marked a new stage in the rebranding of Vinexpo, which is fast becoming the go-to industry partner.

CHINA IS BACK IN FORCE The 7 th edition of Vinexpo Hong Kong has brought fresh impetus to the wine and spirits sector in Asia-Pacific, with major buyers present from across the

Mainland China accounted for the most visitors, with the number of buyers up 7.9%.

Taiwan (up 3%) came third in visitor numbers, followed by Japan and Korea.

3 CHINA IS BACK IN FORCE The 7 th edition of Vinexpo Hong Kong has brought fresh impetus to the wine and spirits sector in Asia-Pacific, with major buyers present from across the region. The recovery of the Chinese market had a stimulating effect on the event. With 17,200 visitors, the number of buyers was up 2.5% on 2014, and exhibitors once again remarked on the quality of the organiser s selection. The number of countries represented at Vinexpo Hong Kong more than doubled, rising from 25 in 2014 to 51 in Mainland China accounted for the most visitors, with the number of buyers up 7.9%. Hong Kong, with 12% fewer visitors this session, moved down to second place, attributable to the trade only rule imposed by the organisers. Taiwan (up 3%) came third in visitor numbers, followed by Japan and Korea. Despite slightly fewer visitors overall from Japan (5 th place), they accounted for more importers, although the Japanese on-trade buyers preferred to wait for Vinexpo Tokyo. Another notable development at this session of Vinexpo Hong Kong was the recovery of Australian imports and consequently the 21% increase in Australian visitors. The ASEAN countries confirmed the upturn already noted in 2014, particularly in the case of Vietnam (up 23%). The majority of buyers at the show (58.8%) were importers, wholesalers or merchants. Retailers occupied second place, followed by cafés, hotels & restaurants, supermarkets and travel retail.

ONE TO WINE MEETINGS A first at Vinexpo Hong Kong, the One to Wine Meetings service was widely praised by participants, giving them the opportunity to grow their networks effectively by means of pre-arranged business meetings with targeted, qualified contacts. The service helped visitors and exhibitors plan their meetings over the three days of the exhibition. This totally free service is a major time-saver and an essential aid to breaking into new markets. It will be available again at Vinexpo Bordeaux 2017.

5 CHINA MARKET CONFERENCE Bringing together an outstanding panel of professionals, the Vinexpo Hong Kong China Market Conference uncovered some of the commercial issues at stake in China, where the wine and spirits market is undergoing rapid transformation. The conference offered an indepth analysis of the market, its development, trends and consumer practices. Following a difficult period, China is back in the picture, with fresh expectations. Chinese consumers are increasingly well-informed and their confidence in online buying is growing. SEE THE VIDEO READ THE REPORT The speakers were Don St. Pierre Jr. (Co-owner/Vinfolio), Judy Chan (Co-owner/Grace Vineyards), Bruno Baudry (CEO/ASC Fine Wines), Chris Tung (Marketing Manager/Alibaba Group), Frantz Hotton (Managing Director/Pernod Ricard HK/Macau), Robert Foye (Managing Director/Treasury Wine Estates) and Xavier Pignel Dupont (Director Asia Pacific/Castel Frères). VINEXPO CHALLENGE The second edition of the Vinexpo Challenge involved 100 participants in a blind tasting. With Jon Arvid Rosengren and Guillaume Deglise, this enjoyable and enlightening masterclass revealed the organoleptic richness of the world s wines. The winner of the Challenge, Ka Lun Terence Wong, received a Jeroboam of Louis Roederer Champagne.

COUNTRY OF HONOUR: ITALY Vinexpo Hong Kong 2016 wanted to shine the spotlight on the diversity of Italian wines and spirits, taking visitors on a fascinating journey through the country s vineyards, wineries and distilleries. The Italian stands were placed at the centre of the exhibition, with special Country of Honour signage. Italy was also the subject of numerous tastings and talks and set the tone for The Blend Aperitivo Italiano evening networking party.

7 THE BLEND: VINEXPO S EVENING NETWORKING PARTY The Vinexpo evening networking party, The Blend, saw 1,600 people gathered in the Grand Foyer of the HKCEC. Guests were able to sample Italian specialities accompanied by a wide range of Italian wines, spirits and liqueurs, presented by the event partner, ICE (Istituto nazionale per il Commercio Estero). The celebrated Italian mixologist Massimo d Addezio, invited by Gambero Rosso, helped create a really friendly, relaxed atmosphere conducive to networking. #letsblend #VinexpoHK

SHIRAZ DAY Shiraz Day offered many opportunities to taste wines made from the Shiraz/Syrah grape

Participants were able to experience and comment on the wines, identify the influences of terroir and

chance to blind-taste 62 Shiraz/Syrah from around the world and vote for their favourite.

8 SHIRAZ DAY Shiraz Day offered many opportunities to taste wines made from the Shiraz/Syrah grape variety. Participants were able to experience and comment on the wines, identify the influences of terroir and climate on a specific grape variety, as well as meet and network with leading experts, including oenologists and winemakers. At the Best in Show competition, organised in partnership with Citadelles du Vin, visitors had the chance to blind-taste 62 Shiraz/Syrah from around the world and vote for their favourite. The winner was the Brooks Road 2013 from the Hickinbotham Clarendon Vineyard in McLaren Vale, South Australia, an estate owned by Jackson Family Wines Collection. One of the highlights of the day was the masterclass Shiraz/Syrah, the international expression of a noble grape variety hosted by Decanter.

Ian D Agata, Italian wine specialist and staff writer with Decanter magazine, hosted a number of masterclasses focusing on this session s Country of Honour: Chianti Classico Gran Selezione The best that Chianti Classico has to offer; Autochthonous Italian grape varieties a personal selection; Ageability in Barolo and Barbaresco with Pio Cesare, Ceretto, Aldo Conterno, Di Gresy and Marchesi di Barolo. VINEXPO FEAT. BETTANE+DESSEAUVE The renowned French wine experts Michel Bettane and Thierry Desseauve have partnered with Vinexpo to create a new brand: Vinexpo feat. bettane + desseauve. For the concept launch at Vinexpo Hong Kong, the organisers put on a series of tastings unveiling unique, exceptional, rare and surprising wines from emerging winegrowers.
