13th Twickenham Beer & Cider Festival 2013 Cask Beer List Brewery Cask Beers (% ABV) Your Notes AMBER Pentrich, Derbys. AXHOLME Luddington, Lincs. Chocolate Orange Stout (4.0) Multi-award-winning stout; chocolate flavours come only from the malt, but Curacao orange peel and vanilla pods are added during fermentation, and a long slow maturation creates a traditional taste - with a twist. Best Bitter (3.8) Traditional English bitter packed full of aroma and bittering hops, a session beer. BRIGHTWATER Claygate, Surrey Daisy Gold (4.0) Popular golden ale with a refreshing bittersweet aftertaste. Little Nipper (3.1) Dark chestnut session bitter with a chocolatey aftertaste. BUFFY S Tivetshall St Mary, Norfolk BUNTINGFORD Royston, Herts. Norwich Terrier (3.6) A fragrant peach-like aroma is followed by a grape-fruity bitterness; long increasingly dry finish. Twitchell (3.8) Second place (Silver Medal) in this year s Champion Beer of Britain competition at Olympia, after winning the Bitters category (shouldn t it have been in the Golden Ales?). Golden fruity bitter with both malt and hop aftertastes. Revision 3 23 rd October 2013 GLG Page 1
BURTON BRIDGE Burton upon Trent, Staffs. XL Mild (4.0) Dark mild with a floral aroma. Basically their XL Bitter but with the addition of caramel to reduce the bitterness and darken the colour. Burton Porter (4.5) Very dark brown - not quite black - fruity beer with a distinctive bitter aftertaste; winner of numerous Midlands beer competitions. BY THE HORNS Summerstown, Gtr. London Wolfie Smith (5.2) Amber ale that packs a punch on flavour all sorts of tasts coming though, fresh hop finish. Originally brewed as a brown ale at 3.2% - recipe now modified. Diamond Geezer (4.9) Very malty copper-coloured ale, a little sweetness to start, then nuttiness follows, finally a hoppy finish. Voted Beer of the Festival here last year. CASTLE ROCK Nottingham COACH HOUSE Howley, Cheshire DARK STAR Partridge Green, W. Sussex Harvest Pale (3.8) Champion Beer of Britain in 2010; pale yellow beer full of hop aroma and flavour, refreshing with a mellowing aftertaste. Gunpowder Mild (3.8) Biscuity dark mild with a blackcurrant sweetness; some bitterness comes through the slightly stronger roast flavour. Hophead (3.8) Very popular light straw-coloured bitter with a clean bitterness from Cascade hops we have it every year owing to popular demand. Espresso (4.2) Also here most years, a black stout-like beer with freshly ground Arabica coffee beans added for a few minutes for a very distinctive taste. Revision 3 23 rd October 2013 GLG Page 2
DERVENTIO Darley Abbey, Derbys. Cleopatra (5.0) Bit unusual this one - some apricot is added with the First Gold hops - very noticeably, but the end product is an interesting complex beer. DOW BRIDGE Catthorpe, Leics. DOWNTON Downton, Wilts. Acris (3.8) Amber-coloured bittersweet ale; caramel maltiness gives way to a crisp biscuity bitter finish. Perfect summery beer with no sign of anything citrus! Elderquad (4.0) Some sweetness and an elderflower aroma perfectly balance the generous hopping; refreshing and thirstquenching. Honey Blonde (4.3) Light and refreshing golden/straw-coloured bitter; blended spicy and floral hops, added to flaked maize and Mexican honey give an ale with a crisp finish. ELLAND Elland, W. Yorks. Beyond the Pale (4.2) Gold-coloured, robust, almost creamy beer; bitterness predominates leading to a dry, fruity, hoppy aftertaste. EXMOOR Wiveliscombe, Somerset 1872 Porter (6.5) Judged Champion Beer of Britain at Olympia this year, following winning Champion Winter Beer of Britain at Manchester in January (also in 2010). Creamy full-flavoured porter with a rich liquorice flavour and hint of chocolate; soft satisfying aftertaste of bittersweet roasty malt. Gold (4.5) Yellow/golden best bitter with a good balance of malt and fruity hop; some sweetness follows through an ultimately more bitter finish. Brewed since 1986, the forerunner of the many golden ales that would follow. Revision 3 23 rd October 2013 GLG Page 3
FYNE Achadunan, Argyll GROWLER (formerly NETHERGATE), Pentlow, Essex HADRIAN BORDER Newburn, Tyne & Wear Jarl (3.8) Third place (Bronze Medal) in this year s Champion Beer of Britain competition at Olympia, after winning the Golden Ales category. Also Champion Beer of Scotland this year. Brought to you at great expense - light golden colour with strong citrus and grassy hop aromas and flavour, tight dry finish. Priory Mild (3.5) Dark mahogany-coloured traditional mild with a slight fresh bitterness holding to the end. Gladness (4.2) Commissioned by the ska band Madness as a British take on lager, brewed as an ale but using lager hops - Tettnang leaf hop for floral aroma with a touch of spice, and Saaz for an end bitterness. Farne Island (4.0) Pale copper-coloured ale with a refreshing malt/hop balance. Not brewed just for the Lindisfarne monks! JOSEPH HOLT Cheetham, Gtr. Manchester HOP BACK Downton, Wilts. Mild (3.2) Classic dark brown/red mild with the malt and fruity hop flavours both coming through - a little more bitter than most milds. Heracles (2.8) Golden beer, truly strong in flavour whilst low in alcohol. Maris Otter barley malt gives its characteristic silky maltiness, quickly followed up by the spicy lemon of East Kent and Styrian Goldings. This is underpinned by the subtle orange flavours of coriander and the dry, clean bitterness of Challenger hops. Revision 3 23 rd October 2013 GLG Page 4
HOP BACK Downton, Wilts. Crop Circle (4.2) A clean, flaxen-coloured thirst-quenching beer; a subtle blend of aroma and bittering hops give crispness on the tongue which is delicately fruity, giving way to some dryness. The inclusion of flaked maize in the grist subtly hints at crisp corn flavours. Entire Stout (4.5) Champion Winter Beer of Britain 2010/11. A rich dark stout with a strong roasted malt flavour and a long, smooth aftertaste. Suitable for vegans (no finings). INVERALMOND Inveralmond, Perthshire Summer Lightning (5.0) 21st anniversary of this trendsetter in the brewing industry; the original summer ale, brewed all year round. An extremely pleasant bitter, straw-coloured beer with a fresh, hoppy aroma. This, coupled with an intense bitterness, leads to an excellent long, dry finish. Probably the beer to receive the most awards in Britain! Ossian (4.1) Well-balanced best bitter with a dry finish; fullbodied amber ale dominated by fruit and hop, with caramel notes in the bittersweet character. KELBURN Barrhead, E. Renfrewshire Red Smiddy (4.1) Bittersweet ale with a citrus hop character that assaults the nose and continues into the flavour, balanced perfectly with fruity malt. KISSINGATE Lower Beeding, W. Sussex Black Cherry Mild (4.2) Real black cherries (in Muscavado) are added to the brew to produce this award-winning mild, that has a light Amarillo hopping for a wonderful taste experience. Six Crows (6.6) Awesome rich, dark, decadent stout with intense notes of molasses, bourbon, oak and wood smoke. Revision 3 23 rd October 2013 GLG Page 5

London Autumn-ale (4.4) Honey-coloured seasonal beer, brewed with local Sussex hops and honey for a spiced fruity aroma and subtle honeyed finish. Crack of Dawn (3.9) Easy-drinking pale ale, with a bit more flavour than might be expected from a beer of this strength, with three varying hop varieties used. Hop o The Morning (4.2) A stout, classic in style, but doublehopped; ABV kept low for drinkability Worm Catcher (5.0) Beautifully hoppy IPA, double-hopped with 3 US varieties for loads of aroma and a subtle bitterness. LEEDS Leeds, W. Yorks. LEES Middleton Junction, Gtr. Manchester Midnight Bell (4.8) A premium dark mild, named after the Brewery s flagship Leeds pub; crystal and chocolate malts combine to give a full-bodied complex character to this awardwinning ale. Brewer s Dark (3.5) New name for their GB Mild; this dark beer is smooth, well-rounded and light to drink. It has sweet undertones of liquorice and chocolate, and a full malty aftertaste. Has won a CAMRA gold award since first brewed in Revision 3 23 rd October 2013 GLG Page 6
MAGPIE Nottingham MARSTON MOOR Tockwith, N. Yorks. Thieving Rogue (4.5) We had it a couple of years ago, and it sold well. A hoppy golden ale with a grassy hoppy aroma and a smooth bitter finish. The brewery is next to Notts County FC s ground, hence the name. Mongrel (4.0) Balanced bitter with plenty of fruit character; dry bitter finish. Brewed at the shared Rudgate Brewery. Moorhouse's Burnley, Lancashire Blond Witch (4.5%) Light ale, fruity with a lasting finish. NAYLOR S Cross Hills, N. Yorks. NUTBROOK West Hallam, Derbys. Named after the architect William Madocks who designed the Cob and harbour at Porthmadog. Wills Neck (4.3) Bright golden ale with a rich malty flavour; late-hopped to produce a lasting bitterness. Named after the highest point in the Quantock Hills. SIBA Supreme Champion Beer of Britain this year. Heart (4.6) Pale brown with some aroma of fruit and malt; gentle tastes of fruit and hops eventually clear to leave a bitter finish. RCH West Hewish, Somerset RIVERSIDE Wainfleet All Saints, Lincs. PG Steam (3.9) Powerful hop and malt flavour with just a hint of fruit; bitter aftertaste. First beer brewed on the new plant (with steam boiler) when RCH moved from Burnham-on-Sea to West Hewish. Dixon s Major Bitter (3.9) From the other Wainfleet brewery, a complex and tasty beer that uses Maris Otter and Crystal malts and 3 hop varieties. Brewery now fully operational after a shaky start in Revision 3 23 rd October 2013 GLG Page 8
ROBINSON S Stockport, Cheshire 1892 (3.3) A genuine heritage light mild that has stood the test of time and remains true to its original recipe. There are few types of ale that can make this claim 1892, as the name suggests, does it with pride. It was the beer used for the hourly paid beer allowance at the brewery. Workers were allocated 4 pints a day, which usually had been consumed before midday. On occasions the singing coming from the brewery could be heard all over Stockport. The beer allowance, and singing, stopped in 1990 due to Health and Safety regulations. Excellent easy drinking nut brown Cheshire ale with a dry roasted nutty malt palate and a delicate Goldings dry hop aroma; the balanced finish is thirst-quenching Double Hop (5.0) Pale brown beer with malt and fruit aroma, but a full hoppy taste comes through leading to a hoppy, biter finish. ROOSTER S Knaresborough, N. Yorks. Trooper (4.8) Premium British beer inspired by the vocalist of a popular musical combo called Iron Maiden (they do a song about the Charge of the Light Brigade). Deep golden ale with a unique blend of Bobec, Goldings and Cascade hops. Sales have now exceeded a million pints. Guardsman (4.2) First new beer brewed in Windsor (in 2010) for over 80 years; a classic English best bitter brewed from Maris Otter malt, Fuggles and Goldings hops; copper-coloured ale with a tangy taste.
