3 Hucknall Beer Festival 2018 For the 2018 Hucknall Beer Festival logo, we decided to continue the celebration of the life and work of the Rev Canon John Godber MA who brought about the building of this centre. Canon Godber worked very hard for the people of Hucknall and ploughed much of his energy and personal wealth back into the community. Part of this commitment to his community was the wish to build a new Church Hall to accommodate the Sunday Schools, Boys Brigade and the Band of Hope which were at that time housed in the old Public Hall on Watnall Road, built in Canon Godber promised to give 100 for every 50 raised by the people of Hucknall, which resulted in him donating 5,000 towards the construction of the planned Church Hall. The strip of land the building was built upon, stretches between Ogle Street and West Street, and was the result of a kind offer by His Grace, The Duke of Portland. Canon Godber cut the first ceremonial sod on this 100ft (30 metre) wide plot on Boxing Day (26th December) 1905, having been presented with the ceremonial engraved polished spade which he can be seen holding in this photograph taken at the time. At this point in time it was clear Canon Godber was not in the best of health and he died on Sunday 22nd July, 1906 at the age of 72. Sadly he did not live long enough to see his dream fulfilled when the new building was officially opened on 16th November, There are only 300 of the 2018 commemorative glasses available as a limited edition, so we do hope you will decide to keep it as a memory to and celebration of one of Hucknall s benefactors. The ceremonial spade and further information can be found in the John Godber Centres reception area in the newly created heritage display case. The public entrances and first floor bar have been refurbished during 2017 with the ground floor bar and function rooms to be undertaken this year. This continues our investment in a WiFi network in 2015 and refurbishment of the first floor toilets in This work is all possible thanks to the proceeds from Hucknall Beer Festival and donors. 15 2018 Festival Brew - celebrating the John Godber Centre LINCOLN GREEN Hucknall, Notts Bishop Tony Porters Porter 6.0% 2 Strong, slightly sweet porter with flavours of chocolate malt and the distinctive hop Following on from last year s 110th celebrations for the John Godber Centre, which saw the creation of a special tea avoured brew for the festival Hucknall brewers Lincoln Green Brewing Company have once again created a special brew for the Hucknall Beer Festival. This year the special brew is named after the Bishop of Sherwood and the Rt Revd Tony Porter will serve up a pint of Bishop Tony Porter s porter a dark style of beer - to the first lucky customer on Friday 16th February. Bishop Tony visited the brewery and worked with Head Brewer Martin Castledine to mix the ingredients for the beer, filling a hopper with different types of malt which were then transferred into a large stainless steel tank for the first stage of the brewing process. The idea for a beer named after a Bishop came from Ian Raynor, who is the former Church Warden of St Mary Magdalene Church whose Church Hall is the John Godber Centre which is the home of Hucknall Beer Festival. This special brew continues our celebration of the festivals home, John Godber Centres, 110th anniversary held last November and its connection as the Church Hall for St Mary Magdalene Church and its new 2 as 1, 1 as 2 vision that was created in 2017 Tony Porter s Porter is a strong, slightly sweet porter with flavours of chocolate malt and the distinctive hop flavour from Sorarchi Ace. We think this unusual hop, originally developed in Japan, imparts a coconut flavour so it s almost a naturally flavoured liquid Bounty?! We re proud to support Hucknall Beer Festival and the John Godber Centre and are particularly delighted to have brewed a beer with a Bishop! Anthony Hughes, Lincoln Green Brewing Company Director.

19 Nottingham Robin Hood Beer & Cider Festival Announces New Venue Due to major redevelopments at Nottingham Castle, for the next three years it will not be possible to hold the annual Robin Hood Beer & Cider Festival there. However we are pleased to be able to con rm that the event will now be held at the Motorpoint Arena in 2018, 2019 and 2020, with hopefully a return to the Castle in 2021 if this proves possible. The festival will not only utilise the large floor of the arena itself (the ice will of course be covered) but also substantial backstage areas, an outside space and probably also Bolero Square at the front of the building, giving plenty of room to bring you all of the usual popular attractions plus new additions. For the first time we will also be in the position to offer corporate hospitality opportunities. The dates for 2018 will be Wednesday 17th to Saturday 20th October, with tickets going on sale from 1st June. Dates have also been pencilled in for 9th to 12th October 2019 and 7th to 10th October Nottingham CAMRA chairman Steve Westby, said we are grateful to the arena and the city council for making this great city centre venue available for one of the most popular events in the city s social calendar. It will present our hard working team of volunteers with a major logistical challenge to move from the Castle grounds to a venue that is mostly indoor, but I know they will rise to the occasion, as always. It goes without saying that we will once again be proudly offering the widest range of draught real ales, ciders and perries in the world in a great atmosphere and at affordable prices. More Further announcements will be made on our website as more details are confirmed. Anthea Roberts - St Mary s Trading Company Director, John Godber Centre Management Committee Member, Beer Festival Committee, Volunteer and Friend Anthea was a dear friend to all of us at the John Godber Centre and her vision, kindness, support, efforts and contribution of love and time have made the Centre what it is today. Without her determination the resurrection of the Hucknall Beer Festival would not have been possible in 2011 along with several other projects within the Centre and its development over the years. Anthea dedicated a lot of time to the organisation of the Hucknall Beer Festival from preparing tokens, serving food, printing programmes, spreading the word of the festival and many other jobs to ensure the festivals success. Anthea is missed dearly every day and we will always remember her. The Hucknall Beer Festival continues to be dedicated to her memory.

20 About The John Godber Centre... The John Godber Centre is a community venue at the heart of Hucknall. The Centre is housed in the old Parish Church Hall of St Mary Magdalene, which was built in 1906 following the vision of Canon John Godber to have a hall in the centre of the town to bene t local people. He longed to provide the local community with a place to meet and socialise. The land was generously donated by the Duke of Portland and any monies raised to build the centre were matched by Canon Godber. For 110 years the Centre has continued this aim, providing such facilities and developing afresh in each new generation. The building is very much at the heart of community life and is much used and valued by the local community and the venue of choice for their life events. The Centre today is owned by St Mary Magdalene Church and governed by the Church Council with a team of 7 staff employed to manage the day to day running of the Centre. A newly created operating board is responsible for the creation and delivery of a 5-year strategy plan for the Centre looking at the complete refurbishment of the Centre and its facilities. The premise licence for the Centre is held by the St Marys Trading Company with a group for Directors responsible for the Centres bars. The Centre offers a number of rooms for private hire for weddings, children s parties, christenings, family events and meetings. The Centre is also home to over 50 different groups, including: theatre groups, social groups for the elderly and bereaved, young person s groups, dance and exercise classes, to name but a few. Copies of Mr King Sent Butter and Mrs Mole Gave Bread. A history of the John Godber Centre, printed for our centenary in 2007 are available to purchase from the bar. Further details can be found in reception or via our website: John Godber was a significant figure in the life of St Mary Magdalene Church, he was a Sunday school teacher whom after ordination served as curate, and a diocesan preacher. He gave generously to St Mary s in time, work and money; he was passionate about seeing the church accommodating and catering for different groups in the community.
