How to improve the future sustainability of the cocoa industry In many ways, we have been pioneers in the struggle to make cocoa farming more environmentally sustainable, more lucrative for the current farmers and more attractive to future generations. We are delighted to see how this continued effort is now bringing lasting results. The farmers are now more able to achieve a stable income and they are using more environmentally sound cultivation practices. And their children get the education and the support of their parents and local community that every child deserves which is the entire basis for continuing the positive development we have initiated. Despite the uplifting results, there is no doubt that there is still a long way to go. Therefore, we continue our dedicated cooperation with the farmers, their children and not least the high skilled NGO s, working for social and environmental sustainability. Fighting deforestation Our efforts in this area are adapted to the changing challenges meeting the cocoa farmers. Thus, fighting deforestation and ensuring environmental sustainability in general is a growing part of our efforts. This is also why we take part of the Cocoa Forest Initiative. With this we recently at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP23) together with the governments of Côte d Ivoire and Ghana and with the worlds leading chocolate and cocoa companies announced far-reaching Frameworks for Action to end deforestation and restore forest areas. Sustainability requires cross-industry cooperation In recent years, we are pleased to see how the major international cocoa and chocolate producers have started their own projects in Ghana. Toms may well be a small manufacturer, internationally speaking. But our methods and approach to sustainable transition are an inspiration to others and are being widely applied in large parts of West Africa. High scale versions of our projects and not least international cross-industry cooperation is key if global cocoa production is to become sufficiently sustainable to meet the future global demand for responsibly grown cocoa. This is why we proactively support and participate in the international partnerships working to make sustainability the norm in the entire cocoa industry. Besides our work in Cocoa Forest Initiative mentioned above, we do this through World Cocoa Foundation, Cocoa Livelihood Program and International Cocoa Initiative. These partnerships upscale the important work done by Toms and other individual companies for the future sustainability of cocoa production. Palm Oil Even though cocoa will always be our most important raw material our CSR strategy also covers other important raw materials. With a highly complex supply chain, the transition to sustainable production and use of palm oil requires dedicated efforts from a huge number of players in the industry. Using only a small amount of palm oil, is in our view not an excuse for not taking part of the fight for sustainability. At Toms we are using 0% certified (RSPO) palm oil in our products, and we work through our membership of RSPO for making sustainable palm oil the norm. 70
