I can t believe another camellia season has gone by! Wow, where has the time gone? I want to thank each and every one of you for attending meetings, helping where needed at our meetings and our Show, and welcoming our new members! We had six new members attend our last meeting! We are so excited about them coming aboard! Some even signed up for our pruning clinic at William Land Park, which looks like it s going to be rained out bummer, but we need the rain, I guess the clinic will be rescheduled, so watch on the website. I can t rely on our events being posted in the Sac Bee, so hopefully we will let everyone on the list know when we set another date. It will probably be the 14 th. I will be in contact with Rick Stevens and get back to you. Our last event after the pruning clinic is our luncheon at Club Pheasant on April 28 th. Please fill out the reservation that is in the last newsletter and get your money in ASAP. We are hoping for another good turnout. We have lots of fun with our silent auction, plant raffle, and installation of officers, along with the delicious lunch provided by Club Pheasant. Please plan to attend and meet some of our new members, along with our wonderful camellia family. We are blessed to have such a fantastic group of camellia lovers. Until then, stay well, prune and feed those camellias and see you on the 28 th! If for some reason you cannot attend the luncheon, please have a wonderful spring and summer and see you in October! Julie West Sacramento, CA 1

4 Culture Corner by Don Lesmeister Well, here we are again, nearing the end of another Camellia blooming season...we now move into another phase of Camellia growing, particularly for container grown plants...camellias like to be stunted a little bit, so container growing plants is what they like. If you are using the black plastic nursery plants, you can move plants from one gallon, to two gallons, to five gallons roughly every four to five years usually without any problems... You can use a plastic tag on the plant or container to remind you of our last recontainerizing. If you are using Redwood containers, and such, Camellias can remain in them for many more years. === We can fertilize both container & in ground plants any time now. REMEMBER, less fertilizer is better. Liquid fertilizer is absorbed a lot faster than solid fertilizers. But, it also leaches out of the container faster than solid fertilizer. I usually use liquid fertilizer at half strength every two weeks for the next few months...plants in the ground can be fertilized with either solid or liquid and once or twice a year, at the container recommended strength is fine...===.now is also a great time to prune your plants...after many years of severe pruning, I now prune only lightly now and do heavier pruning once the plant sets buds, usually in the Fall. === Chewing & sucking critters now are beginning their activity. Ants are the main problem for Camellias and are now setting up a main source of their food, APHIDS. Rather than spraying everything for aphids, I usually have a small spray bottle with almost any type of bug spray and only spray plants that are severely infected with aphid. As Marlene Simon, our last months' speaker pointed out, Mother Nature has provided many insects to do the dirty work for us. Have a great summer...don April Plant Raffle Julius Nuccio, jap, Door prize, Ruta Hagman, ret, Special. Shock Wave, jap, Princess Masako, jap, Night Rider, Hybrid, Frank Houser, Retic.
