The Southwest Open Chili Championship moved to a new home this year as Choctaw Casino and RV Park of Durant, Oklahoma hosted the largest chili championship in Oklahoma history. 162 cooks came out for the hospitality and amenities this fine resort provided. The NOB Pod of Wichita Falls was once again privileged to stage this spectacular regional championship. Cooks from eleven states traveled to Indian Territory to vie for the five automatic chili qualifications. The Glyn and JoAnn Gaines traveling trophy went to Kyle Adams of Iowa Park, Texas. For those of you who don t know Kyle, he is the nephew of Dennis Jackson. Dennis passed away suddenly this past year after owning the Southwest Open by winning it three times in the last four years. I think the crowd felt some divine intervention when Kyle stepped forward out of 162 cooks with the winning number. Shawn Fulton of Telephone, Texas took the automatic qualification for winning showmanship. This is a great event and I sincerely hope you will mark it on your calendar for Memorial Day weekend next year. Pinney Commercial Service Representative Consolidated Insurance Center, Inc Cronridge Drive, PO Box 0664 Owings Mills, MD Direct: Phone: Fax: epinney@cicinc.com ED's REFLECTIONS Information from CASI's Executive Director, Janice Miller CASI members, please check your personal information in the CASI Information System. Corrections and additions should be sent to Janice Miller at garjans@suddenlink.net COOKOFF RESULTS Please send all CCO results along with entry sheets and money to: Jenny Windsor TallyMaster 210 Kennedy Drive Severna Park, MD As I sat to write this article, I realized I would only have two more times to address the CASI membership before my term is over. I appreciate all the support I have had during the past years that I have been on the Board. While some think it is a thankless job, the good times far outweigh the bad. Anyone who didn t attend the Southwest Open in Durant in May really missed a good time! The venue was great, the facilities were superb, and the gambling was fun; especially for the cookoff winners and the casino winners. The only down side was I didn t place, but the time spent with good friends more than made up for the loss. And it really is true that the wind blows all the time in Oklahoma. The good times (and gambling) didn t stop in Durant either, as I attended the cookoff on Memorial Day at Lone Star Race Track in Grand Prairie. The facilities were great and we didn t have to fight the wind putting up EZ-Ups, since the Track provided us with covered cooking areas. Where else can you stir your chili pot and then place a bet on a horse? One thing I ve discovered over the past few months while travelling to various cookoffs is the difference in monitor s explanations to chili judges. No matter if you have monitored for years or only a short time, please review the rules and ensure you provide just the facts. The judging sheet is the best source. Be good to each other, keep cooking chili, getting those points, and supporting the charities! Renee Reflections from the ED It is July and in West Texas it is hot!!! Some of the days it is hot enough that I am not sure I need my camp stove to cook chili, just set the pan on the sidewalk! If you are planning to attend the Great Peppers Meeting on September 10, 2011 in Kerrville, TX, and have not registered, please do it right away. The information, as well as the Registration Form, is located on our web page ( You must also make your housing reservation. While on the subject of the Great Peppers Meeting, remember that your Pod s Annual Report is due to me no later than August 15. All Pod officers (Great Pepper, Pepper Popper, Secretary, and Treasure, as well as Regional and Area Referees) must have their CASI dues paid up through September 30, You can mail the dues along with your report using PayPal, or by sending them to Darin Jester, Membership Director. If you have a success story, please be sure to include it in your report. Remember, if you need to download a copy of the Annual Report, you can find it on the web page in the Resource Center. In addition, this is the year we can make changes to the Rule Book. The form to submit a change can be found on the Web Page in the Resource Center. The change must be on that form and submitted to me by August 15. Consider running for a CASI Board of Director. There are great benefits! The Candidate Form can also be found in the Resource Center. There are four positions open. If you are a Table Monitor, remember that it is your responsibility to examine cups for marks and fillers before passing the cups to the judges. If you discover either one, you are to alert the Head Judge for a disqualification decision. This is especially important in the first round of judging. This does take extra time, but it part of the responsibility of the monitor in accordance with our Rule Book. Be sure to give good instructions following the CASI Rules only. It is your responsibility to control the conversation, answer questions, and enforce CASI rules. Discussion of the chili is not permitted during the judging process. If you are a CASI Member and would like to have a log in for the CIS system, please send me your request (garjans@suddenlink.net). If you have changes to your personal record, please send it to me and I will make those changes. Remember that you can get the latest news on the Official Blog (Ed Reflections) each weekday. If you have information that you would like to share or news, results, or advertisements for your cookoffs, please send them to me also. Janice

We have received renewed commitments from all the major sponsors and are putting together special things for the cooks. I hope to unveil many exciting plans at the Great Peppers Meeting in Kerrville, TX. The national poster and program are ahead of us. Be Bold, Go Gold is the theme for this year. The gold sponsors are the big hitters that send the ball over the fence for us at TICC each year. The current gold sponsors are Bruce Foods, Woodbridge Wines by Robert Mondavi, Tequila Rose by McCormick Distilling, L & F Distributing (Anheuser Busch Products), Glazer s Permian Distributing (Lone Star, Tecate, Coors Light) and our Tech Support partner Hill Country Software and Support. A Gold Sponsor invests a minimum of $10,000 per year in cash, goods and services in CASI. Many go far beyond this amount. Most of these sponsors started out at a lower level and increased their investment as they became better acquainted with our membership. All of these sponsors have been with us for multiple years. This is a tremendous accomplishment on our part as there are constant demands on them for their support. Take the time to thank these sponsors personally when they come out to Terlingua. Think about what it costs them to take the time off and come to the desert for a short time. Support their products and remember they give us the ability to put on a first class, world class event. Never hesitate to thank our smaller sponsors as well. They are the big hitters of tomorrow. In this economy we are sincerely thankful for all the contributions. Thank you for your support. We have a great organization to be proud of. That, is a good thing! 18 Page 18 Terlingua Trails July 2011 CASI Scholarship Program GRADES REMINDER I want to remind some of the scholarship recipients that I will need a copy of your grades for the Fall 2010 and Spring 2011 semesters in order to ascertain whether or not the recipient will continue to receive scholarship money from CASI. I have had several students send me their grades already and I applaud them for being prompt. But I still have not heard from some. If you know any of the scholarship recipients, please remind them to send their grades so that they can continue to receive scholarship money from CASI. Our plan is to issue the checks before mid-august, but we will be unable to do that if I do not have a copy of the grades. Ms. Herrin, Thank you so much once again for offering me this incredible scholarship. I am truly honored and happy to be the recipient. It will not go to waste and you could not have selected a better candidate. The CASI Scholarship will help me reach my goal of earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Texas State University-San Marcos. Scholarships enable students such as me to fulfill aspirations that for many may be difficult to achieve. I am grateful for this opportunity to pursue my higher education dreams and I just want to thank everyone who helped administer and award the CASI Scholarship and express how deeply fortunate I am. 22 Page 22 Terlingua Trails July 2011 THE ROAD BACK TO ROCKY POINT, Part II We just got back from our second visit to Rocky point as part of the plan to renew and rejuvenate the International Chili Cookoff on Martin Luther King Weekend The visit was once again totally wonderful, yet the negative press persists. The focal point of this article, Part II in what will be a series between now and January 2012, is factual information on what is really going on by sharing what prominent folks are saying as well as what the locals in Rocky Point think about the circumstance. At the end there are some web sites I encourage you to checkout to get a first hand feel for the climate, weatherwise and on the real safety conditions, as we will travel there. First, check out the information below, which is a press release carried in the Tucson Newspapers in late May Rocky Point Mexico (Puerto Penasco) Travel is still Safe! May 27th, :00:40 pm U.S. Consulate Admits No Supporting Evidence to Issue Travel Warning to Rocky Point Without any credible evidence to substantiate the claim, The U.S Consulate issued a travel warning about the travel safety to and from Rocky Point Mexico. They have now admitted that they have no evidence or witnesses to back up this claim. The emotionally charged warning was written by a civilian who is a volunteer at the Consulate. The business community in Rocky Point feels they have been targeted by the U.S. Consulate unfairly and that their business and reputation has been damaged by this now admitted erroneous accusation. (Vocus/PRWEB ) May 27, 2010 The U.S. Consulate in Nogales, Sonora commonly releases travel advisories for different parts of Mexico, but the most recent warrant, which was released on May 19, 2010, left many people on both sides of the border wondering where the Consulate was receiving this alarming information. It stated that...unauthorized checkpoints have been set up by unknown persons at night and...motorists who have not stopped at unofficial checkpoints have been shot at and killed Because of this, Seaside Reservations, a Rocky Point property management company along with many other American owned businesses have suffered economic loss unnecessarily. To bolster the assertion that travel to Rocky Point is still safe, as we were preparing to cross the border at Lukeville two weeks ago, I visited the Border Patrol station there. I asked the agents on duty if they had any knowledge of recent incidents on the road south to Rocky Point. There were 4 agents there, all of whom had been at the Lukeville site for over 2 years. All said to me that they knew of no incidents along the road south since they had arrived there for duty. Just before the US Consulate admitted its error, Bob Walkup, the Mayor of Tucson, was visiting Rocky Point and had this to say in another article in the Tucson newspapers: Rocky Point remains a safe place to visit, said Tucson mayor Bob Walkup emphatically during a visit this week to the Mexican beach town. Walkup said that honest, decent people who have traveled outside the U.S. shouldn t worry about traveling to the Mexican beach town also known as Puerto Peñasco. Rocky Point business owners there are seeking to reverse damage caused by the recent inclusion in the State Department s updated travel warning for Mexico that was published on April 22. The mayor said he promised to help promote Rocky Point as safe destination after he heard from the owner of the Friendly Dolphin restaurant that the establishment might have to close because people are too afraid to come. I will go out and I will be your greatest ambassador, Walkup said he told him. Because this is a wonderful place and not once, not once, have I ever felt threatened. I want to encourage the citizens of Arizona that this is a safe place, and that they should come down and enjoy this wonderful place, Walkup said. This is our Riviera. For me to be here in Puerto Penasco is reason to launch an express message to tall the people of Arizona. Puerto Penasco is a safe place. I invite you to come to this tourist destination, he said. In turn, Governor Guillermo Padres agreed that the beaches of Sonora also become the beaches citizens of Arizona and to have confidence that their families are safe during their visits. He assured that, here we make sure every time they come they will have better services, with more security and safety, that all amyl come with their families and they can count on a safe beach that has the necessary infrastructure to enjoy a vacation they will not forget. Finally, after reading The Road Back to Rocky Point published in the May Terlingua Trails, the manager of the Boobar, a neat place on the Malecon along the waterfront there, ed me this message, Good afternoon Ted, I just want to congratulate you on the great article you wrote in the May edition of the Terlingua Trails! As a fulltime resident and business partner in Rocky Point, I am sad to see such a good idea and great event as the cook-off dwindle away...we all understand that the economy is bad and people are hurting, but to see RP as a threat or dangerous is totally absurd! Keep up with the good work. On behalf of the BooBar, please let know if there is anything that we could do to help. Thanks again!! Jose Flores Manager Below are several Web Sites and Facebook connections I encourage you to check out. They add emphasis to our commitment to bring back the Rocky Point International Chili Cookoff for 2012 as a first class event. The Playa de Oro RV Park where the International will be held. The Mirador Hotel, right next to Playa de Oro for cooks who won t be in an RV. It is a 2-minute walk. The Baja Hotel and Cantina where the Sunday Grind Only cookoff will be held. Mary s Sea Food Rocky Point, a favorite place. watch?v=nihx-zmjaae The Boobar, a rockin place downtown on the water. and In case you need reminded about Mexican Coffee at the LightHouse in RP. In the next article, we unveil some specifics on the schedule of activities. Please send any questions or comments to me at tcfpriv@cox.net, and go ahead PUT THE ROCKY POINT INTERNATIONAL CHILI COOKOFF on your schedule for January Ted Fichtl High Desert Pod
