As a culture, America is transitioning away from the sit down meal mentality, and instead is snacking all day, every day! And WHERE do they buy these snacks? Your c-store, of course! And WHAT do they buy? Well, they want it all indulgent AND healthy snacks. $ Share by Segment Snack Nuts 5% Toasted Corn Nut Snacks 5% Sunflower/ Pumpkin Seeds 28% Source: IRI - Current 52 Weeks Ending August 9, 205 Nutritional Snacks/ Trail Mixes 6% One of the most popular snacking categories is the Nuts & Seeds segment, which is comprised of snack nuts, seeds, trail mix and corn nuts. As a whole, the category is up 9.6% over last year, and each segment is up as well. With regard to share, snack nuts are the leader at 5%, followed by seeds at 28%, trail mix at 6% and corn nuts at 5%. However, what s unusual about the Nuts & Seeds category is that it straddles the line between indulgent and healthy snacking in a way that makes it attractive to many snackers. For example, 6% of consumers say they are looking for healthier snack alternatives, but at the same time, 59% of consumers admit that they indulge when they snack. It s this push/pull dynamic that makes Nuts & Seeds such a unique solution since many of them offer high protein nuts or seeds mixed with indulgent chocolate, fruit or another sweet flavor. Snack Nuts With the largest share in the category at 5%, snack nuts are already a leader in the category, but combine that with the largest growth numbers at 3.7%, and you have a segment that deserves plenty of attention. Within this segment, peanuts are still the most popular nut by volume, but cashews, almonds and mixed nuts have experienced the greatest percentage of growth. With regard to manufacturers, excluding DSD, Planters maintains the highest dollar share by brand, followed by David, Wonderful, Blue Diamond, and Corn Nuts. As you can imagine, much of this dollar share is directly related to the popularity of the nut type the manufacturer represents. And although tube nuts are declining in sales at a rate of -6%, some of the health and wellness products like Planters NUT-rition are picking up the slack. These products are being touted as heart healthy, nutrient dense, and high in protein, and are marketed with the slogan, Harness the Power of the Peanut. On the flip side, Planters is launching some sweet, indulgent nut products this year, such as their dessert mix, in flavors like turtle sundae, oatmeal raisin cookie, and banana sundae. At 28% market share, this segment is up 9% versus last year with Bigs Seeds driving the growth by brand. However, David remains the brand leader by share. Both David and Bigs are adding incremental dollars to the category, and Bigs is also becoming more developed as they grow distribution. Giants is significantly under pacing the segment in terms of growth. It s important to note that Nuts/ Seeds are considered the third healthiest snack item by U.S. consumers, and are only outranked by fresh fruit and raw vegetables! This ranking ties directly into that healthy snacking need that consumers have, and it makes your c-store a popular destination for better for you snacks! When planning your seeds offering, remember that seeds are highly incremental, and therefore, can benefit from a broader assortment of product. Consult the Eby-Brown planograms for Trail Mixes Similar to Nuts/Seeds, trail mix is also in the top ten healthiest snacks at #7! In addition, trail mix is responsible for 6% of the market share in the category, and is up slightly at.9% over last year. And although trail mix is under performing when compared to Nuts & Seeds, it lands squarely in the middle of the healthy/indulgence continuum, offering a great-tasting, wholesome snack that satisfies. Planters is the leader in this segment, and they have a plan for 206 to increase distribution of their trail mix line. This plan includes improved quality, the addition of on-trend ingredients and enhanced packaging. Their peanut butter chocolate formula will be changing to include M&M s and increasing the peanut butter flavor. A broad assortment of Planters flavors is recommended in your set. Corn Nut Snacks Similar to trail mix, the corn nuts segment is led by Planters and is under pacing the greater category with modest gains of 2.% over last year. 52 CATEGORY INSIGHTS
