This ground breaking ceremony marked a new chapter in Fairview s remarkable history. Initially consisting of 23 homes and a clubhouse, Thames Edge will provide more housing options for individuals and couples - and will transition Fairview to a continuum of care provider. In addition to the Thames Edge development, Fairview is working to expand our memory care and therapy services in our existing building. This will include some environmental and programming enhancements so we can continue to provide excellent care and services. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting initiative! Thank you, as always, for your continued support for this wonderful organization. James Rosenman Administrator/CEO Fairview Seeks Donations Fairview is looking for donations for its Annual Antiques & Collectibles Auction which includes a silent and live auction. 2 Point O View The News of the Fairview Family Page 2 Fairview History Lesson Fairview Announces Groton Utilities as Lead Sponsor for Antiques & Collectibles Auction Fairview Odd Fellows Home of Connecticut is proud to announce its lead sponsor for this year s Antiques & Collectibles Auction is Groton Utilities. Groton Utilities has been a long time supporter of Fairview and is once again showing its support for our residents by participating as the Auction s lead sponsor. Fairview is extremely grateful for this partnership as it will allow us to continue to give the highest level of care to our residents. In the summer of 1853, Colonel Robert Stafford, a wealthy plantation owner from Cumberland Island, Georgia purchased 33 acres of land on the Thames River in Groton from Belton A Copp for $3,300. In 1868 he bought twelve acres of land on the south side from Moses J. Culver for $1500; thus making a tract of 45 acres. Stafford married a black woman named Zabette and he moved her and their four daughters; Mary, Etta, Ada, and Medora to Groton. Their daughters were both well educated and very beautiful. He built the elaborate 2-1/2 story mansion at a cost of $25,000. It had broad verandas all around and low French windows in the upper story. The house had 19 rooms and a cottage annex contained six additional rooms. The Antiques & Collectibles Auction which includes a silent and live auction is being held on November 2 nd at Fairview. Our auctioneer is Daniel Buck Soules, Daniel Buck Soules appeared for eleven years as an independent appraiser on the PBS television program Antiques Roadshow. Congratulations to our Raffle Winners The property was located upon the west bank of the Thames River, in the Town of Groton, about one and one-quarter miles from the ferry landing and less than one mile from the Groton Railroad Station on the Providence Division of the N.Y. N.H. & H. Railroad. The house was situated on the highest elevation of the property and on all sides had a magnificent view. Up until the beginning of the Civil War, Stafford spent several weeks every summer at his mansion. When the Civil War began, he returned south and never came back to Groton. His daughter, Mary, continued to live in the house. In the 1860 s, Mary married her second husband Charles Gaylord, M.D. It was then that the cottage (tenant house), ice house and circular driveway leading up to the house were built. Mary died in 1879 and was buried on the Stafford property with her two predeceased daughters. The bodies were subsequently removed to Cedar Grove. In 1886, the home was sold to Mrs. Mary Hoadley. Mrs. Hoadley named the property FAIRVIEW for its magnificent river views. She subsequently married William Flemming. This committee was a way for the staff of Fairview to be recognized for their achievements, participate in appreciation gatherings, give back to the community by supporting local charities and build facility wide morale. It was decided to call it the ROCK committee which stands for Recognizing, Outstanding, Character and Kindness. The ROCK committee solely depends on donations and money they earn through various fundraisers to be able to support the events they hold. The ROCK committee is always accepting new unused items that can be used for fundraisers along with monetary gifts so that we can continue the staff recognition programs and charitable giving. On behalf of all members of the ROCK committee, Fairview staff and supported charities, we thank you in advance for your support. If you are interested in making a contribution please contact Tomi Stanley, committee chair at extension 426. Rotary Club of Mystic Donates to Fairview Thank You To Our Youth Volunteers On behalf of Fairview and the Therapeutic Recreation Department, we would like to thank our youth volunteers that contributed many hours this past summer. Mia, Sterling, Sam, Chelsea and Emily thank you for making our residents' summer extra bright. You all were such a big help in our day to day activities and special events, the residents always looked forward to seeing your bright smiles. Have a wonderful school year and we look forward to seeing all of you during your school breaks. Special thanks to the Rotary Club of Mystic for your generous $ donation to Fairview. We are so grateful for your continued support of our organization. 8 Fairview Odd Fellows Home of Connecticut 235 Lestertown Road Groton, CT ADDRESS SERVICE REQUESTED Non-profit Organization U.S. Postage Paid Permit #455 New London, CT Point O View The News of the Fairview Family Page 8 Testimonial from Pam Niles Thank you for keeping me on your lists. My mother, Katherine (Kitty) Muller, passed away at Fairview July 19, 2012, after four years there. Fairview was always a place set apart from others. Although aspects of the facility itself are important to families, such as its geographic location on the water, its cleanliness, and the wonderful opportunity the Bistro provides for residents and family alike, among other things, in my opinion, Fairview's most important attribute was its employees. From the people in the kitchen (how can I forget Regina and Cecilia), to the maintenance workers, to the housekeepers, to the Recreation department, to the aides (Joanne Smith and Maguerita were saints among many!), and of course, the nurses (so many, I'm afraid to start naming them, lest I forget someone; (although Helen DeCiantis was very special to my mother), Deb Morgan, who as someone in her position was so approachable, so patient, and so caring, I could go on. Not only was my mother treated like family, so was I. Day to day, there were many caring people that worked at Fairview that didn't treat what they did as "just a job." And in her last hours, in addition to the exceptional care my mother received, the love shown to my mother was heartwarming and extraordinary. I cannot express what that means to me. Fairview Odd Fellows Home of Connecticut Mission Statement: Fairview, the Odd Fellows Home of Connecticut s mission is to provide our residents with the best nursing care and rehabilitation services, while enhancing the quality of their life in a dignified atmosphere by using the skills and compassion of our staff, and utilizing the latest advances in technology. The Odd Fellows Home of Connecticut was established in 1892 to provide care for the aged and indigent members of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, their wives, widows, and orphaned children. A century later the Odd Fellows Home consists of Fairview, a nursing home and rehabilitation center, and Fellowship Manor, a senior housing complex. The Independent Order of Odd Fellows and Rebekahs continue to provide humanitarian care. There are no fraternal restrictions. We welcome individuals and families to apply for admission to our health care center and our senior housing facility. I will be forever grateful to the many people who cared for my mother. Thank you to all at Fairview. Pam Niles
