A number of people have asked me recently what the fund is used for. It s gratifying to know that through your generosity, our residents are able to participate free of charge in our Dineout Program. During the past year, at least 100 residents have been able to enjoy a fine dining experience at one of the areas many restaurants. For residents who are unable to leave, we have a Dine-in Program where food from area restaurants is brought into Fairview. Fried chicken, lobster rolls, pizza and Chinese food are among the most favored meals. The Resident s Fund is also used to purchase magazine subscriptions, to take residents on mystery rides and to provide funds for entertainers who come to Fairview and perform for our residents. Occasionally, a Fairview resident has a need for special clothing or equipment and there are no personal or government funds available. The Resident s Fund is used to meet these special needs. During the holiday season, residents without families receive gifts that are paid for by the Resident s Fund. Thank you all!! James K. Malloy, Administrator Influenza vaccinations will be obtainable and administered to our residents in mid October. The Connecticut VNA will be offering a flu clinic in our auditorium October 21 from 11 am - 1 pm which will be open to the general public. We particularly encourage family members of our residents to get vaccinated against seasonal flu. This vaccination will be covered by Medicare and some private insurance plans. Your continued generosity to the Resident s Fund will enable our recreation staff to provide these and many more extras that improve the quality of live for our residents. 5 Point O View The News of the Fairview Family Page 5 FOURTH ANNUAL CAR RAFFLE A RESOUNDING SUCCESS Thanks to 471 generous participants the Fairview car raffle broke last year s record profit by $4, All of this year s $22, in proceeds will be used to help pay for the ongoing implementation of an electronic medical records system. Over the past four years the car raffle has generated ticket sales of 1,959 for a total net profit of $73, This year s lucky winner was Patricia Bowden Fialkosky. Pictured pulling the winning ticket is Fairview resident Katherine Muller. Thank you to everyone who participated in this year s raffle (see list of participants on page 4). VOLUNTEER PROFILE Volunteer Coordinator, Sarah Stanley, has chosen Fellowship Manor resident Billy Joe Foreman as the outstanding volunteer for this quarter. Billy Joe visits residents on a daily basis bringing them good cheer. A retired Navy baker, he makes a cake each month and decorates it in the recreation room. Residents greatly enjoy this activity, and so does Billy Joe. Thank you, Mr. Foreman, for your generosity and for all you do to make the lives of our residents a little brighter. BLADDER SCAN MACHINE ARRIVES AT FAIRVIEW Through the generosity of the Pfizer Community Grant program, Wal*Mart, the Reindel Foundation, and hundreds of annual fund donors, Fairview now has a brand new Bladder Scan machine. This machine makes it possible for the medical staff to determine in a non-invasive manner the contents of a resident s bladder. This will make for a much better quality of life for our residents and it will mean less chance for infection and other complications. Fairview is the only nursing home in southeastern Connecticut to have such a machine. Pictured with the Bladder Scan are nurses Jenny Axson and Joanne Golembeski. STONINGTON LODGE DONATES RAFFLE TICKET TO FAIRVIEW EMPLOYEE For the fourth year in a row the Stonington Lodge #26 purchased a ticket for the Fairview car raffle and donated it as a prize for a Fairview hourly employee. Unfortunately, none of the winners have ever won the car, but they have certainly appreciated the lodge s generosity in providing them the chance to win. Pictured pulling the winning employee name out of a jar is longtime Stonington Lodge member Cliff Beebe. Standing behind Cliff are other lodge members (L-R) Charlie Beebe, Ron Hewitt, Rich Trudelle, and Art Swan. Also pictured is the raffle ticket winner Sue Gray RN along with director of development David Brown. WELCOME REBEKAH LODGE CONTINUES GIVING The Welcome Rebekah Lodge #37 recently made another very generous $ donation to Fairview. This gift was used to purchase several Terry Cloth bathrobes for residents to use after showering. The remainder of the donation was used to buy a digital camera for the nursing department. The camera will be used in conjunction with the new electronic medical records system. Pictured with one of the robes and the new camera is Mary Ann Burkard, Welcome Rebekah Lodge secretary.

6 Point O View The News of the Fairview Family Page 6 NIANTIC LODGE #17 ENHANCES RESIDENTS QUALITY OF LIFE AT FAIRVIEW On the weekend of June 27 and 28 the Niantic Lodge #17 I.O.O.F. did an Extreme Garden Makeover in the recreation department garden area at Fairview. Several members of the Lodge and volunteers built two raised flower beds that will provide an easily accessible work area for residents who enjoy gardening. The beds will accommodate residents who use walkers and wheelchairs for mobility. Several residents watched the progress of the construction and shared luncheons provided by the Lodge. All building materials, food, and labor for the project were donated by the Niantic Lodge # 17 along with a very generous monetary donation from the family of the late Blanche Ragona. Pictured during the construction phase is: (R-L) Tim Stanley, Niantic Lodge #17 Nobel Grand, Fairview resident Katherine Muller, Maintenance Department employee and Niantic Lodge member Davey Jones, and Niantic Lodge member Joe Pierpaoli. The new garden area will be named The Blanche Ragona Memorial Garden and a plaque will be placed on the garden in memory of this very special lady who enjoyed the garden area so much at Fairview. FAIRVIEW RESIDENTS GO TO THE BEACH On August 8 residents Millis Watrous, Maggie Hiscox, and Phyllis O Rouke (pictured L-R) along with Alice Martin and Frances Vera (not pictured) were treated to a field trip to Harkness Camp in Waterford, CT. This trip was organized by Fairview s recreation department. After having lunch on the beach they traversed the board walk and enjoyed the fresh sea air. Veronica Bacong (volunteer) and Tomi Stanley, recreation d i r e c t o r (standing L-R) as well as volunt e e r s S a r a h Stanley, Tiffiny Stanley, Kelsie Jones, and Katie McKee-Pierpaoli (not pictured) helped make this a great day for these residents. CHELSEA GROTON BANK FOUNDA- TION & STONING- TON LODGE #26 MAKE DONATIONS Fairview received a $1, grant on May 27 from the Chelsea Groton Bank Foundation. These funds were used along with a $1, donation from the Stonington Lodge #26 I.O.O.F. to purchase a new exercise machine for the therapy gym. Exercise is very important in maintaining a good quality of life for our residents. The addition of the NuStep T5 recumbent cross trainer will allow more Fairview residents the opportunity to take part in some form of physical activity. Pictured using the new machine is Fairview resident Margaret Gerlipp. GROTON MARITIME ACADEMY ENJOYS LUNCH AT FAIRVIEW On July 7 Fairview was pleased to sponsor the Groton Maritime Academy once again for lunch as part of their daily activity. The Groton Town Police Department initiated the Maritime Academy in This year e i g h t e e n s t u d e n t s p a r t i c i - pated in the three week program that began the first week in July. Children ages 12 to 16 are eligible to participate. The program teaches students maritime history, provides opportunities for education and employment, and includes a safe boating course. Pictured outside the Thames Room at Fairview are students along with chaperones and Community Service Officers Doug Hoffman (back row, middle) and Derek Robertson (back row, right).

7 Point O View The News of the Fairview Family Page 7 CULTURE CHANGE UPDATE Fairview has been in the process for the past few years of making our facility a place where the elderly want to come to live, feel safe, and have their days filled with things that they find entertaining, relaxing, and fun. At Fairview we are creating a new culture; one that is welcoming to residents and families. Through culture change the residents needs are a priority. We encourage choices in the residents day-to-day environment that allow them to take more control of their own lives. The change creates a new way of working for staff that nurtures an environment supporting each resident s life, dignity, rights, and freedoms. Here are some of the small changes we have incorporated: offering residents choices such as what clothing they would like to wear, which activities interest them, and changing their meal times empowering the residents by letting them know their opinions are important and that it is okay for them to speak up We are encouraging all of the staff to be a part of this culture change by making small changes in their daily work schedules. We have begun to recognize staff with an Above and Beyond Pin for continuously striving and working hard day-to-day to incorporate all of the values listed below to enhance our resident s lives: taking pride in Fairview as a home and not an institution; supporting culture change initiatives we have already begun such as creating neighborhoods and fine dining being proactive and encouraging other team members to help promote the enthusiasm for this change having a positive attitude and always making the residents feel like Fairview is their home We will continue to make culture change a priority at Fairview. Nothing is more important than the quality of the lives of our residents. TWO FAIRVIEW EMPLOYEES BECOME CITIZENS Elizabeth Argonza (L) and Loan Tran recently became citizens of the United States. Elizabeth is a second shift CNA and Loan a first shift housekeeper. Both are exceptional employees who have been at Fairview for over four years. Fairview is very proud of their accomplishment. We thank them for their commitment to our Country and for the terrific job they do day in and day out for our residents.
