Singles bring a bottle of wine or side dish. Balkan Wines John & Carole Cummings April 29, Mohican Road, Stow, Oh Wines of the Balkans-An Emerging Market Let's think outside the box and forget cabs, merlots, chard, etc. "The Balkan area of Eastern Europe offers some of the most delicious varietals Europe has to offer." (Bill Wilen). The tasting will be presented by Nikola "Duke" Djukich who owns Europa Imports. These are probably wines you have never tasted. They are fruit-forward and easy drinking, though there are some BIG reds in the mix. For additional information, read Bill Wilen's article in the fall AWS Journal. Main Dish: Ham. Volunteer Host or co-host a meeting in It is fun and everyone pitches in to help. Get on board! Bill will have a sign up sheet at the next few tastings. Pick a month Dues and Announcements See Page 4 Due to limited space, this tasting will be LIMITED TO 30 people, members getting first choice. If you will be attending, please RSVP to Bill Davey ( wdavey615@gmail.com or by Wednesday, April 25 with your choice of sides, salads and desserts Tasting Notes: Donna Peters The Wines of Willamette Valley March 25, 2012 The Cleveland OH Chapter AWS meeting / tasting for March 25, 2012, was held at the home of Sheila & Rodger McKain (co- hosted by Marilyn & Ed Pierson) with 40 members and 10 guests attending: Kathy Prorok, Kathleen Thornburg, Catherine & Michael Widemire, Barbara & Dale Pelsozy, Isobel & Ken Zierwicki, Beverly Olson, and Bobbi Krannich. The theme was "Willamette Valley Wines". Rodger McKain presented a brief history of the Willamette Valley Pinot Noirs. Commercial production began in the1960's. But it was events of 1979 that put the Oregon wine industry on the map. Eyrie Vineyards' 1975 South Block Pinot Noir placed in the top 10 at the Gault-Millau French Wine Olympiades, and was rated the top Pinot Noir, one of several non-european vintages to outplace French wines in the competition. Not only did the competition establish Oregon as a region capable of producing top quality wines, it also established that premium winemaking was not the exclusive province of Europe, France in particular. (Cont d Page 2) April Showers!!!!
2 April, 2012 Page 2 Tasting Notes (Cont d.): Donna Peters To date, 2008 is considered the best year for Willamette Valley Pinot Noirs. Marilyn Pierson presented the white wines. Two were made with adapted grape varietals from Austria and Germany. Our special guest, Jay Schabel kicked off our meeting with an introduction to his winery, Auburn Twin Oaks (Chagrin Falls). We are planning an upcoming AWS tasting of his wines. He had a plane to catch and could only give a brief history of the winery and wines and was not able to stay for our actual tasting. Attendees enjoyed sampling a variety of aperitif wines from Gnarly Head, Sterling, and Konunga Vineyards with an assortment of cheeses and homemade crackers! Having 3 separate stations for serving the aperitifs helped to spread out the crowd relieving congestion at the aperitif/appetizer stations. The main course, Willamette Valley Chicken, provided by the McKain s and Pierson s was awesome, and went very well with the numerous salads, sides and desserts. What great cooks we have in our Chapter! Cheers go to our newest member, Chaz Stibil, who donated a second bottle of raffle wine, 2010 Le Price Cote du Rhone. It was won by Marydale Rogan. Congratulations, Marydale.
