2 Introduction It is with great pleasure that I bring you the new Estate Wines portfolio for I am incredibly humbled to be representing such an acclaimed selection of Australian and International wines. We have recently added a number of new agency lines, including the brand behind the 2015 James Halliday Wine of the Year - Xanadu Wines as well as Flying Fish Cove, named one of the Ten Dark Horses. Estate Wines has always been known for it s extensive range of Greek wines, but this year we have also greatly expanded our offering of other imported products, with some beautiful labels from Chile and Argentina. With the addition of these new international wines and the fabulous varietals being made by our Australian and Kiwi wineries, I firmly believe that the Estate Wines portfolio is unparalleled. Some of the wineries listed in our portfolio, have been with us for 14 years, and I would like to personally thank them for continuing to produce excellent wines year after year, working with them is always a pleasure. 4 Stonefish International was established in 2000 by Peter Papanikitas, who through a career exceeding 30 years in the industry working for large companies such as Lindemans, Penfolds and Cinzano developed a priceless level of expertise on the production and sales of high quality and value wine. Peter is the founder of Estate Wine Distributors and after initial success, expanded his business through the development of Stonefish Wines. With a remarkable understanding and appreciation of the wine consumer market, Peter s ultimate goal was to produce wine that exhibits all the attributes that make viticulture in Australia a global phenomenon. 7 Lost Turtle Marlborough & Central Otago NZ A selection of premium wines made from handpicked grapes, on the slopes of the beautiful Awatere Valley in Marlborough and Central Otago wine growing regions. The label itself was inspired by the symbolism of turtles in Asian culture that of longevity, peace and persistence. It is hoped that this brand will continue to endure, enjoyed by many across Australia and Asia. In Greek mythology, this mystical bird is reborn from the ashes of its predecessor, becoming a symbol of renewal and life. 12 Bellvale Gippsland, Victoria «««««James Halliday Winery Rating Established in 1998, Bellvale wine is a family owned business run by principal winemaker & viticulturist, John Ellis. Situated in the lush Tarwin River Valley of South Gippsland, the area is acknowledged as one of Australia s best producing regions for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The wines from those varieties are produced from two individual vineyards specifically chosen for their aspect and climate. The vines are densely planted, dry grown, and limited to very low cropping levels. Best for years, long life ahead Athena s Vineyard Gippsland Chardonnay - Rating 94 Light straw-green; classic cool-climate style, with a strong core of minerality acting as a framework more than the barrel-ferment inputs; the flavours, too, are citrus-accented, all adding up to a Chablis style, the line, length and balance all good Pinot Grigio - Rating 90 Blush pink; this is absolutely not grigio, it is far too fleshy, well into gris territory; poached pear, spice and apple fill the mouth, the acidity soft. 13 D i Giorgio Coonawarra SA «««««James Halliday Winery Rating The DiGiorgio family, originally from Italy, settled on the Limestone coast during the 1950 s. The family turned their attention to viticulture in 1989, when they pioneered the first vine plantings on their property at Lucindale. In 2002 the DiGiorgio family purchased the historic Rouge Homme winery from Southcorp. The wine label now includes the Coonawarra, Lucindale and Sterita ranges and covers a wide cross section of styles and price points. A nicely wrought wine, well-priced Lucindale Chardonnay - Rating 90 Quartz-white; seemingly unoaked, but has plenty of verve to its grapefruit and white peach fruit, resulting in a long, fresh palate Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon - Rating 90 Good colour for its age; the aromas and flavours are a mix of black fruits, earth, spice and cedar, the palate medium-bodied despite its load of alcohol, which thins the finish out a little. Individual vineyards have been sought out for their specific terroir and suitability to certain varietals in the region. Shiraz from Macclesfield, Sauvignon Blanc from Woodside and Pinot Noir from Oakbank. Lambrook Wines; regionally focused, distinctly different. Winemaker: Adam Lampit, Michael Sykes «Vintage Product / LUC + LUC Sauvignon Blanc Spark Sparkling Pinot Noir Shiraz Pinot Noir James H alliday Review 2012 Shiraz - Rating 93 Bright crimson-purple; has vibrant red and black cherry fruit with splashes of spice and pepper; it is elegant, medium-bodied, and supple in the mouth, tannins neatly ranged in support. I like the wine Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir - Rating 92 Bright, clear crimson-purple; the scented bouquet sends an enticing message of spicy red cherry fruit, duly echoed on the supple and silky palate; a touch of new French oak provides background complexity. 23 Leogate Wines Hunter Valley, New South Wales «««««James Halliday Winery Rating Leogate Estate Wines is a relatively new producer from the renowned Hunter Valley region of New South Wales. The wines are produced from vines planted in the mid 1970 s by a Rothbury Estate syndicate, now forming what is called the Brokenback Vineyard. Today, the vineyard has 50ha under vine, with Chardonnay, Semillon, Shiraz, Verdelho and Tempranillo. Winemaker: Mark Woods «Vintage Product / LUC + LUC Brokenback Semillon Brokenback Verdelho Brokenback Shiraz Rosé /11 Brokenback Chardonnay Reserve Semillon /13 Brokenback Shiraz Western Slopes Reserve Shiraz The Basin Reserve Shiraz James H alliday Review 2011 Brokenback Hunter Valley Shiraz - Rating 96 Has gained not just another leg, but legs plural. it is lusciously rich, with an exotic display of red and black fruits that have well and truly absorbed the oak I found in the wine 12 months ago. At least I can say the back label suggesting medium-term cellaring of 5-7 years misses the target by decades. Those who have shared bottles of year-old Hunter Valley Shiraz with a provenance less than that of this wine will take no persuasion Brokenback Vineyard Hunter Valley Semillon - Rating 94 One of those Semillons that allows you to fly now without having to pay later. It has delicious citrus and apple fruit, now simply crisp and fresh, but with the absolute certainty of developing deep-seated lime and honey flavours over the next 3-4 years, its future stretching on thereafter for as long as you can keep your hands off the bottle. Well, I don t know exactly how the oak became seamlessly integrated with the supple black cherry and blackberry fruit, but it happened, and tannins did not come along to spoil the party Shortlist Adelaide Hills Chardonnay - Rating 93 Wild yeast-fermented in new French hogsheads, and stirred once a week for 8 months. It is inevitably rich and full-bodied, but the fruit integrity has not been destroyed Shortlist Eden Valley Riesling - Rating 93 Still exceedingly pale colour, and bouquet and palate are likewise still to develop as much as expected; whether this be a Peter Pan style is the difficult question, but it gets the (partial) benefit of the doubt. 25 Mount Langi Ghiran Grampians, VIC «««««James Halliday Winery Rating Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Great Dividing Range in the Grampians, the Mount Langi vineyard is one of the most isolated and unique sites in Australian viticulture. Langi, as it s fondly referred to, specialises in cool climate Shiraz, but has expanded to feature some other varietals too.
