HISTORY OF FAKENHAM GARDEN CENTRE Gordon Turner has spent 50 years working in the horticultural industry. In 1985, he and his wife Brenda, moved to the Fakenham area and bought the garden centre.

11 HISTORY OF FAKENHAM GARDEN CENTRE Gordon Turner has spent 50 years working in the horticultural industry. In 1985, he and his wife Brenda, moved to the Fakenham area and bought the garden centre. From the start he had big plans to improve the centre, one of which was the addition of a covered walkway. This enabled a wider range of plants available all year round with protection from the weather and gave customers a pleasant sheltered shopping experience too. Since then the shop has grown with the introduction of a landscaping service alongside garden furniture, clothing ranges, pet products and also the coffee shop which is renowned for its home-made meals and cakes, especially the delicious scones! In June 2016, Gordon and Brenda retired after 30 years in the garden centre and Martin and his wife Jennifer took the lead. You can still see Gordon and Brenda, along with Suki the dog around the centre, particularly in the springtime when Brenda comes in to plant up the hanging baskets for customers (amongst other things!). Gordon and Brenda started with a small team and today it has grown to 57 staff. However the philosophy hasn t changed, and helping customers with both practical advice and inspiration is an important part of what the Fakenham Garden Centre team offer their customers. Gordon s son Martin joined the company after previously gaining qualifications at Chelmsford s Horticultural College and further experience in management, working for Van Geest and as Assistant Manager at the same farm as Gordon in Milford, Surrey.
