2 Lunch Club 60 Benefits Healthy nutritious meal planned by a registered dietician from Monroe County. Meals served Monday-Friday between 11:45-12:15 PM. Small suggested contribution of just $3.00 for lunch for those 60 and older. Transportation for Webster Residents to and from our center. (With a suggested contribution of $1.00 each way). Free access to our fitness facilities on lunch days to those meeting center standards. Free fitness classes and lap walking in the gym to those meeting center standards. Free transportation to offsite trips to those meeting center standards! Monroe County Senior Nutrition Program Who is eligible to eat a meal? Any person age 60 or older, regardless of residency, is eligible to eat a meal. This includes staff members and volunteers at the meal site who are age 60 or older. A spouse of any age of an eligible participant as defined above. Disabled persons under the age of 60 who reside at the home of an eligible participant and accompany that person to the meal site. Disabled persons under age 60 who reside in housing facilities where congregate meals are served. Volunteers of any age who assist in the meal service during meal time. Who may contribute? Includes all persons as described in the list above. No eligible person can be denied a meal because of inability or unwillingness to contribute. The suggested meal contribution is $3.00 per meal. All contributions are confidential and voluntary. Who must pay? Staff Staff under 60 years of age must pay $6.00 per person. Guests Guests under age 60 must pay $6.00 per person. Guests include children, other relatives of participants (other than those noted as being eligible as noted above), Employees of agencies, towns, counties, politicians, speakers, social workers, etc. No person shall be denied benefits or subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal Assistance on grounds of race, color, sex, religion, national origin, disability or marital status. This program is funded by participants contributions, U.S. Administration on Aging, NY State Office for the Aging, NY State Dept of Health, and the Monroe County Dept of HS/Office for the Aging April 2016.

We offer a diverse selection of activities such as; games, day trips, fitness classes, cards and more. Our monthly newsletter including menu and activity calendar can be found on our website at: CENTER STANDARDS Participants must exhibit independence and ability for self care. Mental disorientation or physical disabilities requiring individual care cannot be accommodated, unless a caregiver accompanies that individual. An individual s status is subject to periodic review. Caregivers must register and abide by center standards. PARTICIPANT EXPECTATIONS Participants and Participant Caregivers are expected to exercise respect, civility, and orderly conduct towards other participants, volunteers, staff members, instructors, facilities and the public.

4 The First Thanksgiving By Michele Mason, BS In 1620, 102 people set forth from Plymouth, England with the intent to settle the New World. Their journey on the Mayflower was 66 days long. They settled in the area that we now know as Cap Cod, MA. Most of the Pilgrims spent the winter on the ship, and more than half of them died that winter. The next spring, they met Samoset and Squanto, two Native Americans who taught the Pilgrims many things such as how to plant corn and which plants to avoid eating. The first Thanksgiving was a three-day feast with 50 pilgrims and 90 native Americans from the Wamponoag Tribe celebrating together in the fall of While there are no wrtiten records of eating turkey, there is a record of four men going fowling before the feast, where they caught enough fowl to feed the group for a week. There are records of the Wamponoag tribe bringing five deer. They probably would aslo have had eels and other shellfish such as lobster, mussels, and clams as well as Indian corn and cornbread. They would have also had the following foods availbale at that time in history: dried beans and peas, pumpkins, squash, walnuts, chestnuts, beechnuts, hickory nuts, turnips, carrots, onions, lettuce, spinach, radishes, plums, melons, grapes. There is a good chance that many of these foods were served at the first Thanksgiving since they were available. Here is a recipe to share at your Thanksgiving! CORNBREAD RECIPE 2 Cups Cornmeal 1 Cup Whole Wheat Flour ½ Teaspoon Salt ½ Teaspoon Baking Soda 1 ¾ Cups Buttermilk 1. Mix dry ingredients in a bowl 2. Add the Buttermilk and stir until combined 3. Pour the batter into a baking dish 4. Bake at 350 degrees for minutes 5. YIELDS 20 Pieces

5 Project Council 2018 Are you interested in serving on Project Council? It s that time of year! We are seeking new representation for the 2018 calendar year: one male and one female who both actively participate in Lunch Club 60 and the Webster Senior Center Programs! Please see Katie or Kristen if you are interested in serving one of these positions! What is project council? Project Council shall serve as an advisory body to the Monroe County Office for the Aging Nutrition Program in areas related to nutrition, socialization, recreation and education. When does project council meet? Project council meetings are held every other month from 10:00 am 11:30 am beginning in February continuing through December of the calendar year. How do I get to project council? Please plan transportation through Medical Motors as needed. Representatives can be picked up at their homes or at the Senior Center and driven to the project council meetings. Will I get lunch at project council? Project Council Members will receive a complimentary meal at the meetings through AVBI. Medical motors will then pick up representatives at 12:30pm.
