1 2011 BURGUNDY OFFER Not only are the wines a pleasure to taste but, if there was ever a vintage to educate the novice Burgundy drinker in the delights and complexities of the region, 2011 might be that year. Two or three different premiers crus, often situated only metres apart, from the same producer, made in the same way, but with clearly defined differences in flavour and structure. In some "great" years, like 2009, the subtle nuances of terroir are often dominated by youthful concentration. The 2011 Burgundy growing season began with a marvellous April. Excellent weather and temperatures of up to 30 degrees resulted in a very early bud-break and flowering and the anticipation of an equally early vintage. Fine weather continued throughout May. June, whilst pleasant enough, was not really warm, apart from a hot spell at the end of the month. July was miserable, cool and wet and August continued in the same vein until the middle of the month. On the 15th August, Michel Gros said to himself "just one more storm, and that's it. No 2011 vintage!" However, the weather improved dramatically thereafter and, apart from a few showers towards the latter part of the month, glorious condition prevailed right through the harvest into mid-september. This was a precocious vintage - only the sixth ever to begin in August, but the third since 2003! Again, many growers were of the same opinion that some of the recent cooler, more inclement summers might be blessings in disguise. Otherwise, Burgundy may well have to consider planting Grenache before too long! Stringent selection of only the very best fruit was, as is nearly always the, one of the main differences between the finest growers of today and those of yesteryear. More than one of our producers, however, suggested that sorting was a relatively simple task this year as individual grapes were either totally rotten or, more usually, completely healthy. Quantities, generally, were slightly greater than in 2010, but there is and will be a shortage of top Burgundy. Combining the quantities produced in 2010, 2011 and 2012, yields are down by the equivalent of a normal vintage. A special mention should be made of the village of Rully. Between 8am and 9am on July 12th, hail decimated the vineyards and 90% of the grapes were lost! The economy is tough for everyone, but when was the last time you lost nine tenths of your annual income in an hour? And what of the resulting wines? The whites are very good indeed with, as already mentioned, very clear differences in terroir. They might not have the depth and concentration of a great vintage, however, they do not lack grip or acidity as some commentators have suggested. There is less acidity than in 2010 and more than Some of the better whites, especially those grown in subsoils with more "calcaire" had a very pleasing salinity, as well as the usual stony minerality. The red wines, especially but not uniquely from the Côte de Nuits, were an absolute joy to taste. Yields of Pinot Noir were affected more than Chardonnay, as there was less juice than expected in the grapes. This has only had the effect, however, of concentrating the flavours. The best wines are beautiful, ripe, fresh, vivacious and intensely fruity, with fine-grained tannins, purity and energy. In terms of style, they might be similar to the 2000 vintage - an under rated, elegant year - but with more richness, roundness and charm. In terms of longevity, they may well turn out to be like 1985, which gave enormous pleasure from the outset and continued to do so for the next twenty years. Some of the wines are already in bottle, the remainder will be bottled between now and August. All wines are offered EN PRIMEUR and are ex-duty and ex-gst. These will be added at time of delivery. They are poised and polished, offer supreme class and will bring a broad smile to the face of any Pinot Noir aficionado. The Hautes Côtes de Nuits from A.F Gros is an absolutely stunning example and tasted blind it would easily pass for a top notch Vosne Romanée. If you can resist their undoubted youthful charm they will no doubt improve and continue to delight for many years. 4 CHANDON DE BRIAILLES, Savigny-les-Beaune The château at this domaine must be one of the grandest in the region and the brother and sister team, Claude and François, is a winning one. They have both been instrumental in increasing the quality of the wines at this very traditional domaine. The domaine is now officially certified biodynamic with their methods of viticulture and vinification. They use whole bunch fermentation and open tank fermentation in old barrels. The winemaker, Claude, concentrates on making very traditional styles of wine, crisp and fresh and reflecting the terroir of each parcel. Soft and generous, the wines drink very well in their youth, gaining further depth and complexity with ageing. There is no doubt that Antoine s style is for more forward and expressive wines (compared to his father), and the wines are all the better for it. The domaine uses a minimal amount of new oak allowing each vintage to express its own individuality, with very little manipulation in the cellars. As a result these wines are now very approachable in youth, whilst still keeping their capacity to age. The domaine has been certified organic since the 2008 vintage. Gregory s wines are certainly complex and have great structure. They have lashings of ripe red fruit and oak spice. Since 1976, when he took over his father s estate, the domaine has grown to become one of the best domaines in Meursault. Patrick vinifies each parcel of land separately, depending on the intrinsic characteristics of the terroir as well as on the vintage conditions. The wines of this domaine are typified by their rich flavours of tropical and citrus fruit with creamy and nutty oak. The Bourgogne Cuvées of Oligocene and des Forgets are some of the most serious Bourgognes you can find and are great value for money. 15 PAUL PILLOT, Chassagne-Montrachet Paul Pillot, the third generation of the Pillot family, took over the domaine in 1968 with just one hectare of vines and soon established himself as a top producer of first-class Burgundy. Paul s son, Thierry, now runs the domaine, with his sister Chrystelle, and has overseen the expansion of the domaine to a total of 13ha. Thierry s wines are all made with wild yeast fermentation and have a beautifully balanced acidity with a clean, vibrant mineral character. He uses a minimal amount of new oak, which means the wines are far more expressive of the terroir. These are truly unforgettable, seductive wines that are among the very best in Burgundy.
