Lehua was treated for breast cancer a couple of years ago and just recently was diagnosed with bone cancer. She is starting chemo treatments this week. Let us pray for our world, that we may act with gentleness instead of judgment, forgiveness instead of retaliation, and patience instead of exasperation, as we strive for the perfection to which God calls us. Let us pray for all who are suffering and burdened, that the Lord may heal all their ills and shower them will kindness and compassion. 5 th Grade Bulletin Board 2

They did an amazing job! Service Hour Opportunities Ø Can you donate a case or more of Coca Cola or Diet Coke for the Crab Feed event? If so, please do so by Thursday 2/16 at the latest. Note: Families can receive Service Hours for donations that we have solicited. Save your receipt to accompany your service hour report. You will receive 1 Service Hour for each $10 spent (up to 11 of the 35 required Service Hours can be earned through donations). Ø Leaves and weeds need to be removed from the Primary playground. If you are interested in spending some time to clean up the outdoor play area, please contact the school office. 3

4 Congratulations to OLG s Own Young Composer Correction to last week s article It is with great pleasure that the Fremont Symphony Orchestra announces that Sahana Hariharan (6 th grade) was selected to have her original composition (Night Owl) professionally arranged and performed by the Fremont Symphony Orchestra on Tuesday, March 21, Sahana s composition is the result of an OLG music class on composition. Hers was chosen over all 5 th and 6 th grade students compositions in class, and then submitted to the competition by Mrs. Zeppa, our music teacher. Since 1975, Fremont Symphony Orchestra s Children s Concerts have provided an opportunity for several thousand school-age children from public and private schools in Fremont, Newark and Union City to hear live symphonic music- many for the first time. The concerts include original compositions by Fremont school children, professionally arranged and performed by the Fremont Symphony Orchestra. 4

Ticket forms are available on the school website at guadalupe-school.com on the Events tab. As stated in the school contract, each family is required to purchase a minimum of 1 ticket to the Crab Feed, scheduled on Saturday, February 18th. The cost of a ticket is $49 (reserved seating is $51 per person). The event will include: all-you-can-eat crab, pasta, salad and rolls coffee and cake for dessert a raffle with a fabulous selection of themed baskets a silent auction a live auction a balloon pop game (every player wins ) music provided by DJ Mike Wong a professional photo booth a bar selling wine, sodas, beer, water, jello shots, spiked coffee and mixed drinks 5

6 ~CRAB FEED HELPFUL TIPS~ Experienced Crab Feed aficionados know to bring: Melted butter - melt the butter at home and bring it in a Thermos along with a small heavy-based dipping cup in which to pour it. Regular butter is good, but a bit heavy after eating crab for a few hours. You may want to bring a lighter butter or margarine. Lemon wedges Eating Tools Seafood fork or crab cracker to pick the crab Cleaning Tools while some people bring little packets of hand wipes, crab feed lovers have been known to wrap a damp towel inside a dry towel and then use both to clean their hands more efficiently. Bring a big absorbent kitchen towel to wrap around your neck. Favorite sauces such as Tabasco sauce, soy sauce, sesame seed oil, and seafood sauces in small containers. Some sauce ideas: Aunt Patsy s Crab Dressing - 1 cup mayonnaise; ½ cup ketchup; 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce. Directions: In a mixing bowl, combine the ingredients until well blended. A Thai-style Dipping Sauce ½ cup rice vinegar and ½ cup sugar, heated until the sugar dissolves, then add a couple of cloves of garlic smashed to a paste with ¼ tsp. salt and 1 ½ tsp dried red pepper flakes. Make ahead and serve at room temperature. A Korean-style Dipping Sauce 5 tablespoons soy sauce, 5 tablespoons sake or dry sherry, 2 tablespoons sugar, 2 scallions minced, 2 cloves garlic minced, 2 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds or sesame oil. Mix all the ingredients in a bowl. Joe s Stone Crab Mustard Sauce 1 cup mayonnaise, 2 tablespoons half & half, 4 tsp. dry mustard, 2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce, 1 tsp. A-1 Steak Sauce, Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste. Directions: Whisk mayonnaise, half & half, mustard, Worcestershire and A-1 sauce in a bowl until smooth. Season with salt and pepper and chill. 6
