THE BEER LIST OCTOBER 2018 Acorn Brewery, Barnsley, South Yorkshire 1. Phantasm 4.5% One for people who like very pale yellow beers. This ghostly pale ale is hopped with new wave New Zealand hops to give that citrus pine flavour that is so popular. Ballard s (now brewed by Greyhound) 2. Ballard Mild 3.5% Traditional dark mild. Full of flavour. Mahogany in colour. Nutty aroma. Go on! try a real mild for a change! Only Ballard s Best Bitter 4.2% For most of us this is our first opportunity to taste the former Ballard s beers following Carola Brown s retirement. These beers are now brewed by Greyhound. I tried them at this years GBBF and was impressed. Dare I say it.these beers are better and benefit from improved racking and storage at the new Greyhound Brewery facility. 4. Wassail 6.0% One of my all time favourite beers. Revived and IMPROVED by Greyhound. Ruby chestnut coloured barley wine. Must try. Bank Top, Bolton, Lancashire 5.Bad to the Bone 4.0% A rust/tan colour with floral aroma and citrus notes Bays Brewery, Paignton, Devon 6.Storm IPA 4.6% A ruby red ale using only Mosaic hops. Both in the brew and again right at the end with a late injection of this US hop variety. 7. Devon Dumpling 5.1% A strong golden ale with a slight sweetness. Beerblefish Brewing, Edmonton, London N18 *** NEW BREWERY *** These are the most keenly awaited beers to be found at this festival Beerblefish have only been operating part time for three years and only full time (with new branding and updated recipes) for three months. The beers use recipes from the 1800 s to recreate the flavours and styles of beer from 200 years ago. ESSENTIAL MUST TRY IPA 6.9% Brown in colour with three yeasts (including one wild strain), is very malty (some people have commented that it's barley wine like when young) and is bitter. In other words it's very, very, complex!

Porter 6.6% Dark brown and includes wild yeast for added complexity. Even if you are not a fan of dark beers you MUST try this one 10. Elderberry Stout 8.5% Multiple yeast strains which should be ready in time for the festival. Could be a massive beer. 8.5% ABV is merely an estimate. Could be much higher. Cotleigh Brewery, Wivelscombe, Somerset 11. Night Owl 4.2% A dark copper/bronze ale. The Bramling hops impart a subtle hint of blackcurrant and a touch of orange peel. Cross Bay. Morecombe, Lancashire 12. Witching Hour 4.4% Blood orange and pomegranate wheat beer. Definitely one to try. 13. Killing Fields 4.6% A clear wheat beer 14. Zenith 5.0% Gentle bitterness from this IPA Dark Star, Partridge Green, West Sussex As everyone must know by now. This wonderful brewery which started life in the cellar of the Evening Star, Brighton before moving to Partridge Green has been wholly purchased, lock stock and barrel by Fullers. The good news is that Fullers have no intention of moving production to Chiswick. They see the acquisition as more of a way of keeping up with the demand for cask ale at their already up to capacity brewery in London. 15. Dark Star Lager 4.0% Made with German lager malt, this low bitterness, clean and crisp lager is brewed using German hops, Polaris for bittering and Hallertau Mittelfruh and Saaz hops for aroma. 16. Festival 5.0% A chestnut bronze-coloured bitter with a smooth mouth feel and freshness; a classic style strong bitter brewed as a Dark Star version of Festive, a former great Sussex beer from King & Barnes. 17. Revelation 5.7% A blend of Columbus, Chinook, Cascade, Crystal and Warrior aroma hops by the sack full - then dry hopped during conditioning. 18. Green Hop 6.5% An already full-flavoured IPA made is made even bigger by using fresh green hops infused into the slowly conditioned beer. Designed for those who like their hops as an extreme sport! 19. Imperial Stout 10.5% A vigorous fermentation is followed by a long maturation the beer is brewed in February and then released in the unsuspecting public. A densely rich beer with a dark brown head, it has coffee and berry like aromas and a velvet mouth feel. This beer commands

respect and deserves to be savoured slowly. ( I have had 5 pints already - Lord Battersea) Downton Salisbury, Wiltshire 20. Pumpkin Ale 4.2% The seasonal ale from Downton produced every yearly in October 21. Honey Blonde 4.3% Fresh and fruity light ale made with honey 22. Mint Chocolate Stout 4.9% Part of the Stout Selection released by Downton in October 23. Espresso Stout 5.0% Black with cream head. There is a dry bitterness up front with this, coffee grounds, darkly roasted chocolate malt. Lots of depth to the beer. Really very decent indeed. 24. Coconut Wheat Stout 5.0% Wonderfully enticing wheat stout with a pronounced bitterness and complex aroma coupled with an excellent wheaty mouth feel and exotic flavours from the coconut milk. Unfined. 25. Port Stout 5.2% A rich stout with an abundance of malt and hop bitterness, and a smooth sweetness imparted by an addition of ruby port. 26. Roman Imperial Stout 9.0% Abundance of chocolate and roasted coffee aromas. Rich malty flavour balanced by powerful presence of hops. Electric Bear, Bath 27. Inspector Remorse 4.7% Classic London Porter. Made using 6 malts, Pale, chocolate, biscuit, crystal, oats, wheat. One just a single hop variety, Willamette. Unfined Elgoods, Wisbech, Cambridgeshire 28. Plum Porter 4.5% Dark sweet ruby Porter. Several brewers have experiment with a plum flavoured Porter, not notably Titanic. This year we are giving Elgood s a try with their take on this most appealing style of beer. Elland Brewery, Elland, West Yorkshire 29. Lanky Jack 4.6% A wonderful Pale Ale generously hopped with Slovenian Dragon hops. Tropical fruit and grapefruit flavours come from the late addition of Citra hops. Franklin s, Ringmer, East Sussex 30. Lawless 3.8% An easy drinking Pale Ale. Franklin s have moved to new premises in Ringer in order to expand production. The beers are sometimes marketed as Hastings Brewery.

Fuller Smith & Turner, Chiswick London 31. Session IPA 4.0% An American-style, hop-forward IPA, this is a new addition to Fuller s permanent keg range beer. Brewed with hops from the US and Australia, it s big and bold in flavour yet lower than most IPAs in strength. KEG 32. Honey Dew 5.0% A beer that definitely benefits from the cold spritz dispense. Golden beer with a zesty edge and a pronounced real honey sweetness, Organic Honey Dew is a naturally palatable brew that finds popularity among lager drinkers as well as ale fans. It s a popular misconception that only the honey is organic, but in fact the beer is brewed with entirely organic ingredients. It uses organic honey imported from Brazil, plus organic English malt and hops KEG 33. Prodigal Saison 4.5% A Fullers and Friends collaboration with Mondo Brewing here in Battersea. Hoppy saison. Very much a marmite style of beer. Ask for a taster before committing if you are new to this sour style of beer. 34. Frontier Small Batch Craft Lager 4.5% A bit of a cross-over beer. A bittery lager or a lagery bitter depending on your point of view. Available inside Le Gothique bar. KEG 35. Chimay Gold (Doree) 4.0% This is the lower strength trappist monk beer brewed for the monks themselves to have at dinner times. Fullers is the sole distributor of this beer not sold elsewhere in Europe or the UK Vintage Ale 8.5% Grafton Brewery, Worksop, Nottinghamshire 36. Passa Pasha Passion Fruit 4.0% A pale yellow ale. With passion fruit hint on the palate. A citrus & zesty nose. A refreshing Ale with a smooth bitter aftertaste 37. Framboise Wheat 4.0% A pale yellow ale. With a fruity & raspberry hint on the palate. A citrus & zesty nose. Refreshing session ale with a smooth bitter aftertaste 38. Apricot Jungle 4.8% Multi-award winning ale. Made with the English Beata hops, this gives this beer it's unique apricot, honey and almond flavours which then finishes with a pleasant bitterness on the palate. Silhouette 4.0% Vanilla tasting golden ale Greyhound Brewery, West Chiltington, West Sussex.

39. Blonde Bird 3.9% A refreshing golden ale using Bavarian lager malts and Hallertauer hops. 40. Blackbird 5.4% A black porter. Dark chocolate rich malty flavours Hambleton Brewery, Melmerby, North Yorkshire 41. Coco Pop Milk Stout 4.8% When writing the programme notes there is always a beer that I cannot wait to try. This is that beer. Smooth, dark and chocolatey. And YES it really does use Coco pops in the brew. Harveys, Lewes, Sussex 42. Harveys Sussex Best 4.0% Superbly balanced bitter with prominent hop character. The brew has evolved over decades before settling on its current formula. Finest Maris Otter malted barley is supplemented with a dash of Crystal malt for balance. A blend of four different local varieties give a distinctive hoppy finish. Winner of the Champion Best Bitter of Britain title at CAMRA s Great British Beers Festival in 2005 and Prince of Denmark 7.5% Last years Champion Beer of Wandsworth. The word complex is often used in beer descriptions. But in this case it is truly justified. Prince of Denmark is a strong, dark beer of great complexity and depth. It is based on traditional recipes from the 18th Century but has also been described as an 'Imperial Stout Nouveau'. Brown, amber and black malts are mixed with pale ale malts to give this beer its strong aroma and colouring. One of the truly Great Beers of the World. Rarely available on cask. You cannot leave this festival without trying at least a half pint. Elizabeth II in This is a barley wine, almost black in colour, with toffee, raisin and sultana fruit, aromatic coffee, rich chocolate and peppery hops on the nose. Chocolate and cocoa coat the tongue, along with roasted grain, vinous fruit ruby port toffee and spicy hops. Toffee notes dominate the long finish but are balanced by dry chocolate, latte coffee, port wine and gentle, spicy hops. Roger Protz 44. Armada 4.5% The first new Golden Ale that emerged in the 1980s. It has a pronounced yet balanced hop character, derived from the dry hopping of Fuggle and Golding hops. Originally commissioned by the National Maritime Museum. But now available all the year round. Hattie Browns, Swanage, Dorset 45. Dog on the Roof 6% A dark golden ale with a nutty finish Heritage, Burton on Trent

The William Worthington Brewery is a 25 barrel brewery located in the National Brewery Centre. It was installed in 2011 within the fabric of the museum. The brewery utilises the famous Burton upon Trent well water, upon which brewing in Burton was built. The Museum Brewery was originally owned by Bass plc and run by Steve Wellington who came out of retirement to start the two microbreweries in the Bass Museum (now the National Brewery Centre) in He is credited for saving Worthington White Shield from extinction and both brewed the iconic IPA. 46. Witch Ale 4.6% Tawny clouded autumnal beer. 47. Master Piece 5.6% Strong traditional bitter. Masterpiece was the name of one of the former dray horses at the museum. Aromatic hops, toasted cereal notes and hints of smoke and spice enhanced by fragrant fruity character and a top note of fresh bread. A full luxurious mouth-feel combines with a subtle peppery character to create an exquisite finish. 48. Charrington IPA 4.5% This is going to be interesting. Charrington IPA was once Britain s best selling cask ale before disappearing in the demise of the Bass Charrington break up following the mis-guided Beer Orders legislation which saw the brewing and retail arms of the mega brewery split. Recreated by Heritage in its traditional Burton home. Must try Ilkley Brewery, Ilkley, West Yorkshire 49. Ilkley Pale 4.2% A dry crisp Pale Ale brewed with NZ Sauvignon hops which guarantees an uncompromisingly refreshing pint. Kirkby Lonsdale Brewery, Kirkby Lonsdale, Lancashire. 50. Singletrack Black 4.0% A black IPA. New world hops. Old world malts. JW LEES, Middleton, Manchester 51. Manchester Pale Ale (MPA) 3.7% A golden ale with Liberty and Mount Hood hops. Fresh and citrus. Mauldon s, Sudbury, Suffolk. 52. Lemon Adder 4.0% An amber coloured bitter citrus with a dry finish. 53. Octoberfest 5.0% A strong mid-brown coloured bitter. Hoppy with a lingering aftertaste. Mr Grundy, Derby, Derbyshire

Red Ale 4.5% Red coloured beer. Decidedly hoppy rather than malty. The brewery opened in 2010 and all the beers have a WW1 theme. The brewery stands on the site and takes its name from a local Great War hero. Lincoln Green, Hucknall, Nottingham 55. Little John 4.3% Dark amber malty beer. 56. Friar Tuck 4.7% Porter Full bodied, rich dark coloured ale with roasted malt flavours predominating. Milton, Cambridge 57. Cyclops 5.3% Hoppy golden ale. Marcus Aurelius 7.5% Imperial Roman double stout Naylors, Yorkshire 58. Autumnal Ale 4.0% A lighter amber session beer. One Mile End Road 59. Blood Orange Wheat Double IPA 7.4% KEG 60. Morello Cherry Gose 4.2% KEG A sour beer with morello cherries 61. Dockers Delight 4.2% A modern take on English best bitter Outstanding, Salford, Manchester 62. Amarillo 4.0% A single hop golden citrus ale. Pheasantry, Newark, Nottinghamshire 63. American IPA 4.3% A US take on a UK classic. Powerful and flavoursome US hopped beer. 64. Dancing Dragonfly 5.0% Blonde beer. Galaxy, Cascade & Summit hops give that tropical fruit flavour. Robinson s, Stockport, Cheshire 65. Trooper 4.7% A deep golden ale and one of Britain s cask success stories. Launched here in This has become one of the UK s best selling cask ales with 20 million pints served nationwide in these last 5 years. Created by Iron Maiden s Bruce Dickinson this has turned out not to be a mere flash in the pan but a serious volume beer. The band receive a small 3-4 pence royalty on each pint. But with phenomenal sales the revenue stream has proved almost as lucrative as record sales (downloads). When on

tour, up to 5 different variations and collector editions are on sale at gigs. Making the beer sales as great as T-shirt merchandising. Salopian Brewery, Hadnall, Shropshire 66. Luna 3.8% This is a great brewery now pumping out 150 barrels a week following its move form an old dairy in Shrewsbury to Hadnall. Orange blossom and lemon zest aromas. A sweet shop bag of pineapple cube sweets. Sambrooks, Battersea, London SW Powerhouse Porter 4.9% My personal favourite of the core beers to emanate form our nearest brewery. Dark and tasty. 68. Russian Imperial Stout 9.0% Aged in a bourbon barrel. and made especially for Sambrook s 10th anniversary celebrations. This is the last cask Sarah Hughes Brewery Sedgley, Dudley 69. Dark Ruby Mild 6.0% Another former winner of Best in Festival. Wonderfully eccentric, extremely drinkable 6% mild. Uniquely flavoured due to use of a Victorian open topped copper. As usual we sent a van all the way to Dudley to collect this. Sierra Nevada, Chico, California. US IMPORTED BEER two different Beers from Sierra Nevada 70. Sierra Nevada 5.0% This beer is not the usual brewed in the UK under licence but imported direct from the US. It is currently the No 1 craft beer in America. But with barely 3% of the market the beer revolution has a long way to go in the US where brewery numbers are still not at the pre prohibition era of 80 years ago. Interestingly each empty keg of Sierra Nevada is cleaned and re-filled with London Pride before being sent back to America. Available inside Le Gothique on the main bar. 71. Sierra Nevada Californian IPA 4.2% A brand new golden IPA Available on the Keg bar in the garden. Piney with big citrus flavour. Power packed medley of Simcoe, Crystal, and Chinook hops. Tiny Rebel, Wales 72. Juicy 4.8% A tropical golden ale. a sweet jar full of flavour Stay Puft 5.2% This marshmallow porter has the classic roasty qualities of a proper dark ale, whilst the marshmallow gives it a smooth sweetness. A

sweet treat for the cold winter nights. The first ever brew of this sold out in 24 hours as news spread of this genuinely eccentric beer style. 73. Rise 4.2% KEG This is a full on lager for all you lager boys looking for something bright and spritz. 74. Peaches & Cream IPA 5.5% KEG Terrific flavour captured from the city.mosaic and simcoe hops 75. Star Boy 7.9% KEG A knockout punch double IPA 76. Imperial Chocolate Stay Puft 9.0% KEG Supercharged marshmallow porter. A flavour explosion. Everything about Stay Puft but turned up to 11. Delectable marshmallow porter with rich roasty notes, a sticky sweetness and rich dried fruit flavours from the massive amounts of malt working to a higher strength. Must Try. Tring Brewery, Tring, Hertfordshire 77. Squadron Scramble 4.0% This Battle of Britain commemorative ale has a light colour. And is one to try early on. Vibrant Forest, Lymington 78. Reptilian Overlords 4.8% KEG Sour apricot, passionfruit and mango tartness. 79. Inspector Remorse 4.7% CASK Porter tasting of liquid chocolate digestive biscuits. Was a favourite at the the recent Wandle festival. Must try 80. Sarcasm Lemon & Lime Wit 4.6% KEG 81. Stout out to my Hops KEG 5.5% This great beer has six malts and is dry hopped with Cascade & Mosaic hops. Venture to the dark side with this one 82. Umbral Abyss 11.5% KEG Imperial Coffee Stout. Deep & dark. Uses suspended brandy soaked coffee beans mixed with oak chips. Bonkers but super tasty. Must try Wantsum, Canterbury, Kent 83. Imperium 4.0% Deep amber brewed exclusively from locally grown Bullion hops 84. Fortitude 4.2% Amber. Four malts give depth and body. A mixture of American and English hops give flavour. 85. Green Hop Bullion 4.5% A green hopped stout only available during the hop picking season. 86. Black Pig Porter 4.8% An adapted Imperial Russian porter recipe brewed to be more accessible at a lower ABV.

87. Red Raddle 5.0% This ruby red coloured beer uses 5 hops to give a broad hoppy flavour. Wimbledon Brewery, London SW Figurehead 4.4% A nut brown coloured autumnal ale ONE-OFF 89. Quartermaine 5.8% My favourite of the regular brews to come out of the Wimbledon brewery. William Quartermaine was one of the original owners of the Wimbledon Brewery. Quartermaine is a great example of an English style IPA. The fruity, spicy, floral hop aromas lead to a full, rich, almost light fruit cake middle palate, ending with a clean dry bitter finish. 90. XXXK Barley Wine 10% Was previewed here back in October when only just ready to drink. It will be interesting to note how 6 months of ageing has improved the beer. 91. Wimbledon Pale 4.2% A new KEG beer from Wimbledon available for the first time at this festival. Windswept, Lossiemouth, Morayshire, Scotland Stout 5.0% Pitch black opaque Scottish blockbuster. Coffee flavour. Full on roasted barley. The brewery is situated at the end of a runway at RAF Lossiemouth And run by two retired RAF pilots. MUST TRY Wolf, Besthorpe, Norfolk 93. Sirius Dog Star 4.4% A uniquely flavoured red ale. Lightly hopped (just for a change) with a soft fruity finish.
