7 Military Discount Offered for Half Marathon & 5K in Dothan By Megan Stevens, Communications Director, Central Alabama Community Foundation Fort Rucker soldiers and families are being offered a $10 military discount to participate in the Southeast Alabama Community Foundation s 3 rd Annual Half Marathon & 5K. This year s race, which is annually held right here in Dothan, will take place on Saturday, February 1, 2014, beginning at 8 a.m. Unlike other for-profit and themed runs, proceeds from this race stay in the wiregrass community and are redistributed to area nonprofits such as Save a Pet (Dothan), Alzheimer's Resource Center, Inc., Houston Love Memorial Library, and United Way's through SACF grant-making. In past years, Fort Rucker soldiers have volunteered by assisting with water stations, traffic flow and post-race clean-up. This year, we are challenging Fort Rucker families and friends to create their own race teams and embrace this local event, said Burton Ward, SACF President. All race participants will receive a medal and T-shirt. Runners can enjoy post-race beverages, music and food. The course offers unique obstacles as well. This is a great course. It s scenic but challenging with hills. There s a dirt path going through the woods which is beautiful, said Robbie Sandlin, Co-owner of Montgomery Multisport. Sandlin and Co-owner Hardy Sellers manage and time the race. Registration is open at sacfhalfmarathon.org. Early Bird entry for Half Marathon is $50 ($40 for military) until January 1st (midnight). After January 1st, the fee is $75 ($65 for military). Regular registration closes January 31st at 11 a.m. Entry fees start at $25 for the 5K. Registration closes the morning of the race. 7

15 Recipes of the Month Happy New Year Ladies! I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas as well. I don t know about all of you, but now is the time for soups in the Heath household. Here are just a few of our favorites over the years. If you have a favorite, please it to me as we are always game for new ideas. Have a great start to your New Year and I will cook with you some more next month! Tupperly, Christine (christineheath01@gmail.com) Buffalo Chicken Wing Soup (This is the BOMB!) 6 cups milk 3 cans (10-3/4 ounces each) condensed cream of chicken soup, undiluted 3 cups shredded cooked chicken (about 1 pound) 1 cup (8 ounces) sour cream 1/4 to 1/2 cup hot pepper sauce Combine all ingredients in a slow cooker. Cover and cook on low for 4-5 hours. We serve this one over rice just to add something to it. Yield: 8 servings (2 quarts) Sante Fe Soup 2 lbs ground beef. Brown with 1 Onion 1 Package dry Ranch Dressing 1 Package Taco seasoning mix 1 can Kidney beans 1 can Rotel Tomatoes 2 cans White Shoe Peg Corn 1 can Black Beans 1 can Diced Tomatoes 2 cups water 1 can Pinto Beans Bring to boil and simmer 2 hours. Add more water or tomatoes if desired. MAKES A LOT!! (Sometimes I don t have 2 hours, so less cooking time is still good) Vegetable Ham Chowder 1 c. Diced Ham 1 can white corn 1 pkg. (14oz) frozen broccoli florets (cut into bite-sized pieces) I typically remove the stems 2c. cheddar cheese or fiesta blend cheese 1 qt. heavy whipping cream (dairy aisle) Place all ingredients in a dutch oven and put on low heat just until heated thru and cheese has melted. Serve with cornbread or breadsticks! ( DO NOT LET BOIL it can curdle your cream) 15
