1 Market dynamics European market Markets have been active in the first week of the month in view of the preparations for the yearend activities. Prices are satisfactory for avocado, grapes, air-freighted mangoes, limes and slight price increases have been recorded for other most commonly traded products, as usual in this part of the year. Volumes traded have been consistent particularly in the case of orange and clementines even though with low prices. Due to the economic downturn it looks like the festivity period will not provide further enhancements. Avocado Demand remained weak while supply has further developed: arrivals from Chile have strongly increased and those from Mexico are far above the average, even if with some quality issues; volumes from Israel and Spain have been quite limited until the middle of the month (also because of rains in Spain and Morocco) and there is predominance of small fruits from most origins. In this context, prices have decreased but sales remained disappointing; the green market is now well supplied with prices just on average but firm. Beans Beginning of season for the West African origins with relatively high prices; no other origins on the market and the year-end are making prices strong and stable. Berries The market is low, with limited demand; the blueberries from Chile and Peru maintained a good price level, while the condition of the Argentinean supply is poorer. Grapes Quotations reached very high values with large price-range due to the early end of the competitive season but started to decrease in view of Christmas. The market is expected to be relatively low until the end of the year as a strong supply is being recorded with increasing arrivals from all most common origins. The grapes from South Africa and Namibia are on the market for a season which is forecasted to be positive (+ 4-7% production) while Chilean exports started in week 49 and should increase 13-16% globally in the season. Prices are expected to decrease further for white seedless grapes and remain favourable for red varieties. Lime Undersupplied market, due to the shortage in Brazil and increasing market demand in Europe in view of the festivities. Prices have been strongly above the average, with quotation ranging 12,00-14,00 Euro/ctn and lower prices for small sizes. Importers have readjusted prices downwards to speed sales. Quotations for sea-freighted and air-freighted fruits are similar but air-freighted fruits may reach 20,00 Euro/ctn. Lychee Prices become flexible when the market approached the commercialization of the sea-freighted fruits from Madagascar. Quotations of air-freighted fruits ranged 5, Euro/kg in December while the first seafreighted fruits obtained 3,00 Euro/kg. The marketing season is expected to be good as Madagascar confirmed its strategy for the fourth consecutive year: prices could establish around 2,25 Euro/kg. Demand should as usual decrease in the aftermath of the end-of-year but will probably stick later than usual due to the late Chinese New Year (19 February). Mango The market has been low but showed signs of recovery: prices stand between 5,00-6,00 Euro/ctn for kent and keith and 4,50-5,00 for atk, with sizes 6 and 12 obtaining lower values and quotations of air-freighted fruits strongly above the average; Ecuador and Peru are on the market but their volumes are not predominant for now. Quality issues are being registered for all origins. Melons Trade has been difficult for airfreighted products (Dominican Republic and Senegal) but quotations for these product origins are improving. Papaya Prices are stable but a shortage period is expected due to low production volumes in Brazil and Ghana. Pineapple With some boats delayed because of the weather and increasing demand because of the festivities, the market improved but remained very difficult. Prices dropped in week 51 as stocks have increased: the product is requested but prices are just on average for

2 standard brands while quotations for top brands and mini-pineapples remain satisfactory. Stone fruits Prices of stone fruits are too high to stimulate demand in this part of the year. Airfreighted fruits from Chile are on the market and the total volumes from this origin are expected to return to normal after the sharp downturn last year due to the frosts. The production has increased year-on year also in South Africa (+15% nectarines, +10% peaches, -1% apricots) while the country is trying to diversify its destination markets. Limited demand and slow sales have been observed also for plums while very high prices have been recorded for cherries (over 12,00 Euro/kg at the beginning of the month, now established around 8,00 Euro/kg with prices strongly depending on brands). With low demand due to the economic downturn, prices could turn very low. Strawberries The strawberries from Egypt, Morocco and Mexico are on the market at very high prices in view of the Christmas (over 6,50 Euro/kg). With an increasing number of importers in this part of the year, stocks of tropical fruits have increased in Europe; if the market will act harmoniously or not, depend on how this circumstance will be received by market operators and consumers. As in the last years, the activity at the retail level is forecasted to be concentrated in the days of Christmas and yearend and return to normal in week 2.
