1 Market dynamics European market, week 13 (March 2015) The market observed low sales in March, reactivating in view of Easter for few products only. Prices are lower than expected, a part from the cases of avocado, pineapples, beans and asparagus whose markets are undersupplied. Asparagus High prices for imported asparagus; the European production is on the market but available volumes are limited for now. Avocado Prices are high and firm in both the hass and green segments. With the Chilean offer practically over, the market of hass avocado is undersupplied; arrivals from the Mediterranean sources (Israel and Spain) are decreasing and presented quality issues and delays because of the bad weather in January. Limited volumes from Colombia, Mexico and Kenya completed the offer. In the green segment, the winter supply is also going to an end and the first arrivals from South Africa are on the market. The market is getting tenser in view of Easter: prices firmedup for all origins and varieties and stand far above the average. The situation is expected to remain unchanged until the beginning of May when the supply from Peru will be consistent. Berries Frequent price oscillations and large price range have been observed for blueberries as a consequence of a lower regularity of supply. Volumes on the market are decreasing particularly for the Chilean fruits which nevertheless registered record export volumes (total exports this year will be tons); exports from Peru also set a new record (2.600 tons and +73% in volume) while Argentinean shipments reached nearly tons in 2014 (+30% over the previous year). Prices in this part of the season will depend on quality and condition of the supply, most will depend on how volumes from Morocco and Spain will increase. Beans Very high prices and large price range for Kenya and the West African origins due to small volumes available and increasing demand. Chillies With the imports from Dominican Republic halted because of phitosanitary problems, the prices of the piment Lanterne from Antilles skyrocketed, almost doubling in France. Ginger Large price range for ginger from China and Thailand. Grapes Stable market for white seedless grape especially in the pre-packed form; pressure because of increasing arrivals and lower prices but good sales pace for red grapes. The South African season is almost over (production +25%, exports record +30% with substantial growth towards Asia and new markets) and is giving way to the Chilean and Indian grapes. Prices for grapes from Chile are above those of the other product origins and lower than last year but higher than in ; volumes and quality are more than satisfactory. Rains and hails in India will instead considerably reduce exports from this source: 50% of the crop in the Marahastra state is lost but the prices of the fruits received until now are satisfactory. Kiwi Despite the recent tropical storm, a good crop with significant volume growth on the previous campaign - mainly thanks to increased output of yellow-fleshed fruits is expected In New Zealand. The total harvest should reach 108 million trays, with over 70 million trays of green and about 30 million trays of gold kiwifruit; the export season is starting and the fruits quality is reported to be excellent. Lime The demand is low and prices are just on average; the price range for Brazilian fruits is large while the supply from Mexico is practically over and will increase in May only.
2 Mango Prices were expected to be high at this time of the season because of the decreasing volumes from Brazilian but remained low, particularly for tommy atkins. The total exports from Peru will be % in volume in comparison to last year. Prices of air-freighted fruits have been very high but lead to higher imports and the product is now offered at relatively low prices in some cases. First arrivals air-freighted fruits from Burkina Faso. exchange. A better market context, with more volumes and less pressure, has been felt in week 13; however, if prices remain so high, stocks may build up again immediately after Easter. Weather problems in the Indian Ocean lead to ripening problems for pineapple Victoria. Pomegranate With smaller volumes of seafreighted fruits, prices have increased; first arrivals from South Africa. Melons Difficult market in the last weeks but, with diminishing volumes and higher demand because of warmer weather, prices are slightly improving. A good development of the campaign from Senegal is forecasted because of delays in some Mediterranean countries production areas (Sicily). Papaya Small volumes on the market; some deliveries have been rejected because of pesticides excesses and, with an increasing demand due to the spring and the incoming festivities, prices have soared. Passion fruit The market is short for all origins (small production volumes in Kenya, delays in arrivals from Zimbabwe and production problems in Colombia). The Israeli product remains better quoted than other product origins. Pineapple The situation is unchanged, with small volumes and very high prices due to low arrivals and unfavourable rate of Strawberries Low prices and difficult market for the last fruits from Egypt and Morocco because of the beginning of the European production season which is nevertheless delayed in some cases (France). Stone fruits Little interest and slight downwards trend for peaches and nectarines whose prices remain above the 2012/2013 season when volumes were similar to this year; sales has been affected by cloudy weather in some countries but were in line with the volumes available. Decreasing prices for plums due to increased availabilities from South Africa and Chile, with small differences in prices depending on varieties; the demand did not show a big interest but sales remained satisfactory. Good sales should occur in the coming week for the products typical of Easter that is grapes, pineapples, asparagus and strawberries. Importers willing to provide prices and market information and exporters available for submission of news on their production areas please contact marketinsider@intracen.org
