1 Market dynamics European market, week 21 (May 2016) The market is very low as the weather has not been favourable especially in Central Europe and the beginning of the European products season as well as the existing stocks of winter season fruits are also not favouring sales. Prices remained very high for avocado in big sizes and papaya, established records for limes and are returning to average levels for mango and pineapples. Avocado The supply has considerably improved in terms of volumes as the Peruvian and South African season entered in full swing. However, the market remains strongly unbalanced in terms of sizes, with large prevalence of small counts. Prices are above average for big and medium sizes and very low for small sizes, where sales of counts from 24 onwards are very difficult. The size balance could slightly improve in the next weeks, depending on which will be the results in production areas of Southern Peru which will be entering the market soon. The supply of green varieties is high above average and prices have considerably decreased. Dates Multiple origins on the market in view of the Ramadan. Ginger Very low prices; China is practically the only origin on the market. Grapes The last grapes from overseas obtained good prices, with importers trying to sell as fast as possible given the arrivals of new crops from Egypt and Israel. The Indian volumes, about 100% higher in comparison to last year, have been prevalent in May while the Chilean and RSA season ended earlier than usual given the anticipated start. The market for red grapes has been low supplied and presented good prices, except redglobe which had problems of condition. With high prices due to the relatively small volumes available, the demand has hesitated and quotations have considerably tended down at the beginning of week 22. Kaki Beginning of season for sharon fruits from RSA with quality problems but good prices for well-conditioned fruits. Kiwi Sales have been low as the volumes from the winter origins are still significant and the fruits are being promoted in view to end stocks. Chile is registering lower prices year-onyear, with relatively good quotations for big sizes only; the New Zealand s season has kicked off, with prices relatively lower in comparison to 2015 for fruits in 10 kg and 5.6 kg ctn (particularly the small sizes) and slightly higher prices for fruits in 3,5 kg ctn (big sizes). With increasing production volumes and consumption already high, the margins to improve the category performance in Europe seems to be quite limited. Lime Prices skyrocketed and reached record levels doubling the season average. Quotations are similar for all sizes with relatively narrow price range; sea-freighted and air-freighted fruits frequently obtain the same prices. The Brazilian fruits present quality issues (not enough colour) but the volumes from Mexico are small and arrivals from Guatemala are not enough to top up the supply. The end of the season for lemons in Spain and the delay of arrivals from Argentina have further contributed to the price increase. Lychees Air-freighted lychees from Thailand are on the market at very high prices (10.00 Euro/kg). Volumes traded are small given the general market context and the marketing

2 window for this product seems to be narrowing with increasing concurrence of season fruits and demand concentrating in the winter period only. Mango With the West African countries season in full swing and increasing number of supply origins from Central America, prices are back to average values and might decrease further as the demand is very low. Counts 7 and 8 are obtaining distinctly higher prices in comparison to sizes ; quotations continue very high for air-freighted fruits. Papaya There is practically no product on the market and prices reached 15,00 Euro/ctn with considerable price-range between sizes; sizes 9 are rare. Passion fruit The supply is improving but available volumes are relatively small, especially from Colombia, being nevertheless enough for the demand; prices are low. Physalis High prices due to the lack of product in origin countries. Pineapple Available volumes have increased and, with low demand, prices are sharply decreasing; the fruit is being promoted and quotations remained high, for now, only for top brands and air-freighted fruits. The European season products are on the market even though the available volumes will be significant only next month. Forecasts for stone fruits have not been released yet due to the uncertainties of the weather; however, it is known that the total crop will be slightly lower than last year with apricots certainly down 11% ( tons). The stocks of apples from the winter season are still significant due to the lack of end markets for major producing counties (Poland and Italy) because of the Russian ban; the season for pears is instead practically over. The sales of Southern Hemisphere pip fruits has therefore started, with production forecast for apple and pear of mt and mt respectively; for apples this represents a decrease of 2% on 2015 but exports should increase by 6% to mt while for pears a decrease of 8% on the 2015 crop is expected with exports 1% lower at mt. The market for tropical and off-season fruits is going to enter a relatively steady period as usual during the European summer, most probably with relatively good demand only for the most commonly traded products.
