1 Market dynamics European market, week 30 (July 2016) Markets for tropical fruits have been very calm due to the availability of European season fruits and because of the summer holidays which limit the possibilities to reach consumers. Avocado The supply from the Southern Hemisphere (+15% in comparison to last year) started to decrease and will end earlier than in previous seasons, most probably in weeks 33-34; the demand is very active and prices have tended to increase standing above last year average. The supply in August will be topped up with volumes of air-freighted fruits from Mexico but the market is getting short and could become undersupplied before the first arrivals from Mexico (at the end of August) and Chile (weeks 34-36). Available volumes in the green segment are very small and prices reached record levels. Kiwi The sales of Chilean fruits is proving slow; there are still a lot of fruits to be sold and prices are lower year-on-year being strongly below those of 2016 particularly for big sizes; the Chilean supply has also observed problems of condition in some cases. Lime Prices are back to average levels after weeks of record quotations; volumes are huge from Brazil and Mexico (which is now in a season peak that will last at least until the end August); the product is largely offered with flexible quotations and narrow price range between sizes for counts Lychee Small volumes from Mexico and Vietnam are on the market; rambutans from Guatemala are also on the market. Mango Prices are getting quite low as volumes are increasing and the demand is stagnating. While the season from Senegal is in full development, the sea freighted fruits from Israel have are already reached the market. Prices are low with relatively large price range for tommy atkins while remain relatively firmer for fibreless varieties. Prices of air-freighted fruits have decreased due to large availability of air-freighted fruits from Israel. Spain, whose harvest is expected to reach tons, will be on the market soon, earlier than in previous years. Physalis Prices are returning to average values after the peaks registered in recent weeks due the lack of product (bad weather in production areas). Pineapple With small volumes on the market, prices increased and stand considerably above average particularly for big sizes and counts 7 ; the demand is low but the market might get quite tough in August because small arrivals from Costa Rica could be observed during the whole month. The campaign for the European season products is developing smoothly and satisfactorily for peaches and nectarines, with good quality fruits, favourable demand helped by the good weather and slightly higher prices in comparison to the last season (as well as less friction between main suppliers Italy and Spain). Lower market activity is being registered at the end of the month with prices decreasing and products offered at promotional prices because of the summer holidays. Most probably, the return to a normal market activity will gradually occur in the second half of month.
