1 Market dynamics European market, week 7 The market is very calm. With the Fruit Logistica Fair the ordinary activities have been guaranteed in the first week of the month but cold temperatures and school holidays have subsequently weakened the demand; severe storms have also imposed the closure of the port of Rotterdam for two days so that delays of vessels and unloading operations created additional problems beside those imposed by the low demand. Asparagus Prices are very high with large range as a consequence of small production volumes in Peru; near beginning of season for Spain. Avocado The market is undersupplied and prices are rather stable above the average. The supply from Chile (which will deliver its last volumes in March) and from the Mediterranean origins (volumes strongly below average) as well as the limited volumes from Colombia and Morocco are not enough to satisfy the demand. It is likely that the summer season from Peru and Kenya will be anticipated this year even if with some concerns about too early ripening. The supply is low also for green varieties whose prices are high and firm. Cherries Due to El Nino, volumes from Chile have been smaller than expected this year but the prices obtained have been higher than in the previous season. Berries - Slow market, sufficiently active for the availabilities; prices have tended down as the winter peak is near to its end. Grapes High prices for white seedless grapes and slow market for red globe and red seedless varieties. The demand is good but available volumes, in principle forecasted above last year levels, are proving quite limited for some sources. The number of origins and varieties on the market is huge but quality problems are occurring for most origins generating huge losses (up to 50% in some cases) and therefore the necessity to repack or through fruits away. South Africa is trying to fulfil the supply gap but some volumes couldn t be loaded in January due to extreme weather conditions; Chile is on the market also with quality problems while India, which should theoretically observe a record season this year, has not entirely reflected its export volumes on the market until now. There is lack of pre-packed fruits on the market. Lime The market prices improved in few weeks as available volumes are small: arrivals from Brazil are quite regular in volume but poor in quality and with lack of big sizes; on other hand, the fruits from Mexico are practically unavailable because of smaller production volumes after adverse weather conditions. Prices stand above average with relatively large price range and predominance of small sizes particularly for Mexico. Lychees Near end of season for the fruits from the Indian Ocean region; small volumes from Honduras are on the market. Mango Prices increased after the low peaks registered in recent weeks; available volumes from Brazil are relatively small, while the weather conditions in Peru (rains due to El Nino) imposed to stop shipping for about two weeks tuning the available volumes insufficient. Quotations stand above average particularly for medium sizes and are similar for all varieties with slightly higher prices for kent from Peru. The first arrivals from South Africa are on the market. Melons The market context is complex: demand is quite low as usual is this part of the year and prices proved flexible, especially at the beginning of the month because of large availabilities (Brazil, Costa Rica, and Honduras) and low demand. The first melons from Morocco, Spain and Senegal will be on the market soon for a season which is anticipated to be earlier than usual because of the climate changes. Papaya The product is scarce because of the droughts in Brazil; prices are tending to increase because of small fruits sizing (even if the sugar content is higher than usual); mrl s problems have also been reported in some cases. Passion fruit Very small volumes on the market due to the droughts in Colombia and because of the reduced number of origins on the market; small sizes are prevailing and prices are tending to increase; Zimbabwe will be supplying the market again around Easter only.

2 Physalis - Low supply because of small production volumes in Colombia; prices stand above the average for both sea-freighted and airfreighted fruits. Pineapple Very small volumes on the market due to the adverse climatic conditions in Costa Rica which are limiting shipments; prices are very high, stand strongly above the average and may increase further if the problems in Costa Rica will persist. Some companies are obliged to buy from competitors in order to fulfil the programs. This situation will extend for some weeks and should not normalize before Easter; some market operators expect the undersupply could length about six months. Pomegranate - India is on the market and obtains very high prices given also the near end of season for the Mediterranean origins (Spain, Israel and Turkey); the season from Peru is about to start. Plantain With increased volumes on the market, prices are back to average values. Stone fruits Prices have been low at the beginning of the year, being slightly satisfactory for plums; a more balanced supply allowed obtaining better and stable prices in February. Sweet potatoes - Increasing offer from multiple origins, on the market at the same time (Honduras, Egypt, Israel and Costa Rica); price are on average but could considerably tend downwards. The period traditionally favourable for tropical fruit has outreached its peak; the Chinese New Year provided the last sales of some traditional items such as lychees and the market is now starting its run towards Easter observing the beginning of the transition for some products and origins. The next weeks will hardly bring an improvement in sales and consumption as the winter temperatures, milder than in previous years, might favour the demand of fresh fruits and vegetables but would probably reflect on the sales of season products rather than on tropical fruits. Beside the economic crisis, which is hampering the efforts of increasing consumption in the European market, it is getting very clear that the trade patterns are strongly changing because of the weather vagaries which are more and more influencing the production volumes and the seasonality of the most commonly traded fruits.
