1 Market dynamics European market, week 30 With the European countries registering high temperatures and the summer holidays, sales are extremely low. The expected favorable weather is too hot to favor the commercialization especially in Southern Europe while the displacements due to the schools break are keeping consumers far from the main centers. The market activity is low in all countries, with prices favorable for few products only notably those whose markets are undersupplied. Avocado Volumes are sharply decreasing from both Peru (now concentrating in the USA and Latin American markets) and RSA, while arrivals from Kenya have increased but are not enough to fill the gap. The market is undersupplied and prices are reaching historical levels, exceeding 12,00 Euro/ctn for hass, as already occurred in April/May. Volumes in the green segment are also decreasing and prices, which showed very high for some weeks, are stable also as a consequence of the situation in the hass segment. The market context is expected to last for quite some time (probably until the end of the year) but much will depend on how the retail prices will be adjusted, as high price levels may turn the demand considerably lower. Ginger The first arrivals from Brazil are on the market and obtain over 30 Euro/ctn. Kiwi With high temperatures and preference for seasonal fruits, the commercialization is slow. Prices for the Chilean fruits are considerably below last year average, even though the trade for this product origin is favourable for big sizes. Lime With smaller volumes on the market and favourable demand in this part of the year, prices reached relatively high quotations (8.00 Euro/Ctn). Arrivals are quite limited from Brazil, while the availabilities from Mexico are large; mid-sizes remained better quoted but the price-range among sizes is very limited, also in the case of counts ; the difference between Brazilian and Mexican fruits prices is relatively small (about 1,00 Euro/ctn). Lychees Few batches from Mexico, China and India are on the market. Mango The market is scarce of product: Senegal is now the last West African origin on the market and with the near end of the arrivals from the region, multiple sources, unusual in some cases, are being accessed to supply the fruit. Prices increased to 8.00 Euro/ctn and are relatively close for all varieties and origins. The first arrivals from Israel are on the market, but the season for this product origin will enter its full swing in August only. Papaya Prices for sea-freighted papaya stand above the average because of smaller production volumes in Brazil during this part of the year. Physalis Minimal prices in some countries (4,50-5,00 Euro/ctn for 12x100 gr.) are proving that arrivals planning has been a bit shallow: availabilities are too big for the European summer period when the demand is affected by season fruits sales. Pineapple Available volumes are getting small and are forecasted to decrease further. Prices have increased and now exceed 10,00-11,00 Euro/ctn. Quotations nevertheless vary considerably depending on countries/markets and the highest values are reached by big sizes only. Prices of top-brands stand strongly above the average. The season fruits campaign is hampered by too hot temperatures which are complicating both the production and the commercialization: with big volumes on the market, too hot temperatures and the summer holidays, the market context is getting quite critical, with very low prices for all products - especially peaches, nectarines and melons - which will hardly provide returns to the producers.
